Verbal and visual representations in task redesign: how different viewpoints enter into information systems design discussions

We explore an important phase of information systems design (ISD), namely task redesign, and especially how different viewpoints enter into the dis- cussions. We study how one particular visual representation, a process diagram, is interpreted and how alternative, even competing, representations are produced verbally. To tie the visual and verbal representations and the representational prac- tices to wider social practices, we develop and use the Extended Three-dimen- sional Model of discourse. This paper presents a method for analyzing human conceptions related to e-learning, based on positioning data on what is called here a learning matrix. The set of dimensions comprising the matrix distinguish between emphasis on individuality and sociality in learning, between viewing learning as knowledge adoption and as knowledge construction, and between viewing learning as subjective and as objective to time. Designing the Didactic Strategy Modeling Language (DSML) From PoN: An Activity Oriented EML Proposal

[EN] This paper presents the design of the didactic strategy modeling language (DSML) according to the principles of Physics of Notations (PoN). The DSML is a visual and activity-oriented language for learning design characterized by the representation of different activities according to the nature of the task. Once the language is designed, a blind interpretation study is conducted to validate the semantic transparency of the learning activity iconography. The results of the paper allow to refine the icons. In addition to this, an authoring tool for DSML, which is integrated to an LMS, is presented. As a result, a model driven course was designed as a DSML pre-validation.

How might someone carry out an educational task by moving an object or by guiding another person in doing so? This article describes the practical work of a group of school students as they work through an object-based physics task. It analyzes a recurrent practice whereby one student influences another's embodied conduct, either by manually guiding an object (a weight, a moveable plank, and so on) or by guiding the hand of another student as they manipulate an object.
