Characterization of monopolymer blend of virgin and recycled polyamide 6

2002

It is a common industrial practice to blend virgin polymer with the same recycled polymer coming from plastic scraps that, in general, has not undergone relevant degradation. In this work, the characteristics of blends of virgin and recycled polyamide have been considered by changing the amount of recycled polymer and the presence of humidity and a stabilizer. Neither dry nor wet stabilized recycled polyamide samples show significant variations of the molecular weight, but the melt Newtonian viscosity of the blends are slightly different from that predicted by an additive rule, despite the same chemical nature of the two components. This holds true even more for the humid unstabilized sampl…

EFFECT OF MOISTURE ON THE BULK PROPERTIES OF SALTED POLY(CAPROAMIDE).

1980

The glass-transition temperature (Tg) and the elastic modulus of nylon-6 and its mixtures with 4% w/w LiCl and with 2% LiCl+3% LiBr were investigated. In one set of experiments care was taken to avoid absorption of moisture during the measurements. In another set of experiments, samples were exposed to atmospheric humidity for different lengths of time. Both unoriented and oriented specimens were investigated. The presence of 4% LiCl almost doubles the amount of moisture absorbed at equilibrium by nylon-6. The Tg was found to be greatly affected by the moisture content and by salt type. When strict precautions to exclude moisture are taken, the addition of 4% LiCl raises the Tg of nylon-6 b…

Natural gas hydrates vs. induced dysfunctions in the hydrocarbon extraction process

2021

Cantoned fluids in porous-permeable or fractured media of reservoirs have acquired during the geological time special properties. The fluids from the reservoir could be or not a mixture of reservoir water, liquid hydrocarbons and gaseous hydrocarbons. Considering if inside of a reservoir there are two types of substances like natural gas and reservoir water which may be in the form of vaporous than the condition of saturation of gases with water vaporous is fulfilled. This process is taking place due to thermodynamic equilibrium resulting the so-called gas humidity. This state corroborated with a certain chemical composition plus favourable values of pressure and temperature may be decisive…

Effect of climate and vegetation on soil organic carbon, humus fractions, allophanes, imogolite, kaolinite, and oxyhydroxides in volcanic soils of Et…

2007

A soil sequence along an elevational gradient ranging from subtropical to subalpine climate zones in the Etna region (Sicily, southern Italy) was investigated with respect to organic C, kaolinite, and crystalline to noncrystalline Al and Fe phases. Special emphasis was given to the stabilization of soil organic carbon (SOC) and its interaction with the inorganic phases. The soils were variations of Vitric Andosols that developed on a trachy-basaltic lava flow with an age of 15,000 years. Two main vegetation systems dominated the sites: at the lower sites, it was mainly maquis vegetation and, at the higher elevated sites, predominantly coniferous forest. The concentration of SOC in the topso…

Temperature influence on moisture transfer through synthetic films

2000

Abstract Water transfer through films was investigated as a function of the temperature, the physical state of water and the relative humidity (RH) difference. The films were two synthetic packagings: a hydrophobic one, the polyethylene, a hydrophilic one, the cellophane. Some phenomena which could occur at low temperatures were discussed, such as polymer structure change due to mechanical relaxation or network plasticisation and modification of the penetrant diffusion at its melting temperature. But it seems that the comparison of water permeabilities (WPs) with temperature, especially at subzero temperatures, requires the correction of their calculation with the difference of water chemic…

A new equipment to measure the combined effect of humidity, temperature, mechanical stress and UV exposure on the creep behaviour of polymers

2008

To be able to study and predict the physical properties of a polymeric material under different environmental conditions is very important. Moisture, UV irradiation, thermal and mechanical stresses can dramatically change the characteristics of the material and hinder some specific applications. In this work, a new equipment able to perform creep tests under different environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, stress) is presented. Some preliminary results are also presented using a sample of polyamide 6. As this polymer is sensitive to all these variables, it is appropriate to verify the effectiveness of the new instrument.

Water Adsorption Characteristics of Acyclic Oligosaccharides of α-Gluose Studied by Near Infrared Spectroscopy

2013

The adsorption properties of water molecules on maltooligosaccharides are attributed to the OH groups of the glucose rings in maltooligosaccharides. The water molecules are adsorbed onto OH groups by hydrogen bond formation. Near infrared spectroscopic and gravimetric techniques were used in analysing the adsorption characteristics of maltooligosaccharides. Near infrared spectra of the dry maltooligosaccharides were acquired during the adsorption of wa- ter molecules at a relative humidity of 50%. The amounts of water adsorbed by the samples were also recorded by an ana- lytical balance. Second derivative techniques were used in decomposing the OH combination frequency of the adsorbed water…

WATER MASSES EXCHANGE THROUGH THE STRAIT OF SICILY DURING THE LAST DEGLACIAL PERIOD AND THE HOLOCENE

2022

The main goal of this thesis is to explore the inter-basin connection between the eastern and the western Mediterranean (E- and W-Med, respectively) during the last deglacial and Holocene periods (last 15 kyr). The thesis is based on the study of a sediment core recovered at the west flank of Sicily channel (W-Sicily), strategically located under the current path of the surface Atlantic waters and directly below the present-day hydrographic boundary layer between the Eastern Mediterranean Sourced Water (EMSW) and the Western Mediterranean Deep Water (WMDW). This key location allow to explore past changes in both surface and deep water exchange between the E and the W-Med. In this thesis, a …

Climatic and Pathological Rhythms in a Humid Tropical Area, the Case of The Philippines

1997

The fact that weather significantly affects yearly, monthly and daily morbidity in human populations has been documented for a long time by a number of individuals. They have illustrated very well some of the basic structure and underlying mechanisms of seasonality in morbidity. But until now almost all these efforts were carried out in countries with temperate mid-latitude climates. Furthermore, meteoropathological investigations have for the most part concentrated upon mortality statistics for the usual reasons of data availability and comparability. However, an important question that arises when considering the effects of weather on diseases is how the relationship varies under differen…

Vaporization Characteristics of Ethanol Droplets: Influence of the Environment Humidity

2011

The study of the gasification of a droplet via vaporization, which involves heat, mass and momentum transfer processes in gas and liquid phases, and their coupling at the droplet interface, is necessary for better understanding and modeling of complex spray and mixture formation issues. A detailed description of the vaporization of an isolated droplet has been realized in this experimental study aimed at investigating the impact of the water vapor contained in the surrounding gas on the evaporation of an ethanol droplet. The experimental set-up consists of a heated chamber with a cross quartz fibers configuration as droplet support. An ethanol droplet is located at the intersection of the c…
