Aqueous humour (AH) is an important biologic fluid that maintains normal intraocular pressure and contains proteins that regulate the homeostasis of ocular tissues. Any alterations in the protein compositions are correlated to the pathogenesis of various ocular disorders. In recent years, gender-based medicine has emerged as an important research focus considering the prevalence of certain diseases, which are higher in a particular sex. Nevertheless, the inter-gender variations in the AH proteome are unknown. Therefore, this study endeavoured to characterize the AH proteome to assess the differences between genders. Thirty AH samples of patients who underwent cataract surgery were categoriz…

Svetlana Rönkkö ja Tove Hansson : vieraan aksentin performanssi mediahuumorin resurssina

2016

The paper deals with foreign accent performance in two popular comedy shows in Finnish television. Two different foreign accents of L2 Finnish – Russian and Swedish – were performed by two fictional characters: Svetlana Rönkkö, a Russian-born woman, and Tove Hansson, a Swedish speaking woman coming from the Åland Islands. Our main focus is on the empirical analysis of the phonetic features in these performances. The features are analysed as such, in relation to the empirically studied, “authentic”, features of L1 Russian and Swedish Finnishes. The performances are looked as folk linguistic (Nieldzielski & Preston 2003) analyses of the most prominent indexes of the social groups in focus, dr…

2017

In the 21st century alone there have already been released plenty of computer-animated comedy-adventure cartoons that have become blockbusters in a very short time. America-based animation studios, such as the worlds oldest Walt Disney Animation Studios (1934), Pixar Animation Studios, DreamWorks Animation, Blue Sky Studios, or the most-recently established Illumination Entertainment (2007), have all been entertaining not only children themselves, but whole generations of viewers, including those childrens parents (e.g. the author of this article), grandparents, and great grandparents as well. Titles such as Shrek (2001), Ice Age (2002), Finding Nemo (2003), Tire Lion King III - Hakuna Mata…

'In Mucker I was born': humour et pittoresque dans "The Green Fool" de Patrick Kavanagh

2004

International audience; Kavanagh’s The Green Fool (1938) consists of a double portrait of himself and his birthplace, the main motifs of which are humour and wit. In his self-portrait, humour dominates, enabling him to positively, if not, proudly, single himself out : his imputed status as « village fool » or « family idiot » actually reveals his essential singularity as a poet. Contrastingly, his portrait of Inniskeen is marked by farcical theatricality and witticisms galore. Farce and wit prove compelling instruments of ridicule and apt ways to circumvent the constraints of his milieu. Yet their dominance in the communal portrait hints at Kavanagh’s failure to overcome his suffering from …

Efficacy of systemic administration of riboflavin on a rabbit model of corneal alkali burn

2020

AbstractChanges in the barrier mechanisms in the eye should determine the rational route for the administration and dosage of each drug in the treatment of traumatic injuries and other pathologies. The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy of intra-arterial delivery of 14C-riboflavin (as an “indicator”) and compare it with intravenous and intramuscular administration in an animal model of chemical eye burn. 14C-riboflavin (14C-I) was administered by intra-arterial (carotid artery), intravenous (femoral vein) and intramuscular (femoral muscle) routes. The total radioactivity was determined over 2 h in the plasma and structures of the rabbit’s eyes using a scintillation counter. The r…
