Care Workers’ Readiness for Robotization : Identifying Psychological and Socio-Demographic Determinants
2020
Successful implementation of robots in welfare services requires that the staff approves of them as a part of daily work tasks. In this study, we identified psychological and socio-demographic determinants associated with readiness for robotization among professional Finnish care-workers. National survey data were collected from professional care workers (n = 3800) between October and November 2016. Random samples were drawn from the member registers of two Finnish trade unions. The data were analyzed with regression models for respondents with and without firsthand experience with robots. The models explained 34–39% of the variance in the readiness for robotization. The readiness was posit…
Interpersonal Counseling in the Treatment of Adolescent Depression: A Randomized Controlled Effectiveness and Feasibility Study in School Health and …
2019
AbstractIn order to offer early and accessible treatment for adolescents with depression, brief and effective treatments in adolescents’ everyday surroundings are needed. This randomized controlled trial studied the preliminary effectiveness, feasibility, and acceptability of interpersonal counseling (IPC) and brief psychosocial support (BPS) in school health and welfare services. The study was conducted in the 28 lower secondary schools of a large city in Southern Finland, randomized to provide either IPC or BPS. Help-seeking 12–16-year-old adolescents with mild-to-moderate depression, with and without comorbid anxiety, were included in the study. Fifty-five adolescents received either 6 w…
"Rokote rikollisuutta vastaan?" : käsityksiä rikollisuuteen vaikuttamisesta kriminaalihuollon toimijoiden lehtikirjoituksissa 1953-1967
2008
Tämän tutkimukseni aiheena on 1950- ja 1960- luvuilla suomalaisen kriminaalihuoltotyön virallisena tahona toimineen Vankeusyhdistyksen julkaiseman ”Rikollisuutta vastaan” – lehden artikkeleissa esiintyneet käsitykset rikollisuuteen vaikuttamisesta. Etenkin pyrin tulkitsemaan, miten kriminaalipoliitt…
Irtolaisen elämänkulku : Ilmajoen työlaitoksen naiset 1962-1972
2015
Tutkimus käsittelee naisirtolaisten elämää sotienjälkeisessä Suomessa. Vuonna 1937 voimaan astuneessa laissa irtolaisuus määriteltiin tuomittavaksi elämäntavaksi ja sen nojalla yhteiskunnan kannalta vaikeat ongelmatapaukset voitiin määrätä työlaitokseen. Irtolaisnaiset tuomittiin työn vieroksunnan, juopottelun ja haureuden harjoittamisen perusteella. Työlaitos oli ankarin irtolaisuudesta määrätty rangaistus, johon turvauduttiin vasta sitten, kun lievemmät huoltotoimet osoittautuivat tehottomiksi. Tutkimuksessa käsitellään irtolaisuuden muodostumista Ilmajoen työlaitoksessa vuosien 1962-1972 välillä hoidettujen naisten elämäntarinoiden kautta. Tutkimuskohteena ei ole ainoastaan irtolaisuus v…
Mental Health Status of Healthcare Workers During the COVID-19 Outbreak
2021
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic is a massive health crisis that has exerted enormous physical and psychological pressure. Mental healthcare for healthcare workers (HCWs) should receive serious consideration. Methods: Outcomes assessed were self-reported perceived stress, depression symptom, and sleep changes. The predictors examined included sociodemographic factors and perceived social support. Results: The results demonstrated that half of the HCWs had moderate levels of pe…
Family violence and mental health in a sample of Finnish health care professionals : the mediating role of perceived sleep quality
2019
Background Family violence (FV) is a prevalent health issue around the world and health care services have an important role in both recognizing and treating the consequences of violence. However, FV experiences among health care professionals themselves have not been investigated much. We also lack specific knowledge on the associations between FV and mental health. Aim The purpose of the study was to investigate the prevalence and effects of FV in a sample of Finnish health care professionals. In addition to analysing direct connections between different types of FV and mental health, the mediating effect of sleep quality was also taken into account. Methods The study followed a cross‐sec…
Time to care? Temporal variations of agency of the Finnish adult foster carers.
2020
This article analyses a hybrid form of housing and care service for older people called adult foster care. In Finnish adult foster care model, an older person moves to a foster care home and is cared for by a semi-professional foster carer who is not related to them. A foster care home is thus simultaneously a personal dwelling and a site of intensive care work which also changes the rhythms and routines of both the foster carer and older person. In the article I ask, how do foster carers express their temporal agency and its variations (identity, pragmatic, life course) through time work? By temporal agency I mean individuals' ability to impact on their experience of time, which is done th…
Everyday life and the new shapes of identities : The different meanings of ‘things that did not happen’ in the lives of Finnish older persons during …
2021
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected our lives in many ways since the end of 2019. This paper investigates the everyday lives of Finnish older persons during the first three months of the pandemic when they were required to stay in “quarantine-like conditions.” The study utilises the ‘sociology of nothing’ in exploring the meanings of nothingness in the everyday lives of older people; that is, the things, events and people that were absent from their lives because of the pandemic. The main interest of the article is to reverse the typical analytical focus from ‘things that happened’ to ‘things that did not happen’ and to shed light on the experiences and descriptions of older persons' unlived…
Protocol for developing a mental imagery intervention: a randomised controlled trial testing a novel implementation imagery e-health intervention to …
2019
IntroductionDrowning due to driving into floodwater accounts for a significant proportion of all deaths by drowning. Despite awareness campaigns such as 'If it's flooded, forget it', people continue to drive into floodwater. This causes loss of life, risk to rescuers and damage to vehicles. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate an online e-health intervention to promote safe driving behaviour during flood events. Methods and analysisThe study will use a 2×3 randomised controlled trial in which participants are randomised into one of two conditions: (1) education about the risks of driving into floodwater or (2) education about the risks of driving into floodwater plus a theory-ba…

2021
Objective This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of brief training in the guideline-oriented biopsychosocial management of low-back pain (LBP) in occupational health services using a cluster-randomized design. A small sample of physiotherapists and physicians from the intervention units (N=12) were given three- to seven-day training focusing on the biopsychosocial management of LBP, while professionals in the control units (N=15) received no such training. Methods Eligible patients with LBP, with or without radicular pain, aged 18-65, were invited to participate. A web-based questionnaire was sent to all recruited patients at baseline, three months and one year. The primary outco…
