Arousal/Stress Effects of “Overwatch” eSports Game Competition in Collegiate Gamers
2022
Kraemer, WJ, Caldwell, LK, Post, EM, Beeler, MK, Emerson, A, Volek, JS, Maresh, CM, Fogt, JS, Fogt, N, Häkkinen, K, Newton, RU, Lopez, P, Sanchez, BN, and Onate, JA. Arousal/stress effects of “Overwatch” eSports game competition in collegiate gamers. J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000–000, 2022—To date, no physical response data are available for one of the most popular eSport games, Overwatch. The purpose of this investigation was to describe the stress signaling associated with competitive Overwatch play and to understand how acute hormonal responses may affect performance. Thirty-two male college-aged gamers (age: 21.3 ± 2.7 years; estimated time played per week: 18 ± 15 hours) completed the…
Physical performance, heart rate variability and hormone concentrations in cross-country skiers throughout the season
2016
Cross-country skiing is an extremely demanding and versatile competitive sport. Fairly little is known about changes in basal hormonal concentrations and function of the autonomic nervous system throughout the season. Better understanding about these changes as well as their relationship to changes in physical performance and training could be useful for designing better training practices and periodization. This study followed 22 national level cross-country skiers (12 men, 10 women) throughout one competitive season. They were tested at the beginning of the season, during the general preparation season, during the specific preparation season and after the competition season for physical p…
Being moved by listening to unfamiliar sad music induces reward‐related hormonal changes in empathic listeners
2021
Many people enjoy sad music, and the appeal for tragedy is widespread among the consumers of film and literature. The underlying mechanisms of such aesthetic experiences are not well understood. We tested whether pleasure induced by sad, unfamiliar instrumental music is explained with a homeostatic or a reward theory, each of which is associated with opposite patterns of changes in the key hormones. Sixty-two women listened to sad music (or nothing) while serum was collected for subsequent measurement of prolactin (PRL) and oxytocin (OT) and stress marker (cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone) concentrations. Two groups of participants were recruited on the basis of low and high trait e…
The effect of exercise intensity and exercise environment on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and physiologic parameters in young male skiers
2017
Ruostekoski, Anni. 2017. Intensiivisen intervalliharjoituksen ja harjoitusympäristön vaikutus aivoperäiseen hermokasvutekijään ja fysiologisiin vasteisiin nuorilla mieshiihtäjillä. Liikuntabiologia, Jyväskylän yliopisto, Liikuntafysiologian Pro Gradu- tutkielma, 64s. Johdanto.
Neuromuscular, hormonal and oxidative stress responses to endurance running exercises in well-trained runners
2007
The aim of this study was to investigate to which type of running exercises well trained endurance runners respond more favourably with regard to acute neuromuscular and endocrinological responses and exercise-induced oxidative stress. It was hypothesized that these responses depend on the type of running exercise and relate to the physical characteristics. Altogether nine different running exercises and a long walking exercise were performed by a total of 88 male athletes. An intermittent exercise consisting of progressive 20 s runs decreased vertical jump performance in middle distance runners (MID), but improved it in marathon runners (MAR). An 18 – 24 min exhaustive test run, a 40 min i…
Concurrent endurance and strength training : neuromuscular, cardiorespiratory and hormonal effects of the exercise order in previously untrained and …
2015
The aim of the present thesis was two-fold. First, to investigate physiological adaptations to concurrent endurance and strength training performed in the same session with different exercise orders (i.e. commencing training with endurance or strength, respectively; E+S vs. S+E) in previously untrained men (n=42) (study 1). Second, to examine physiological adaptations when strength training was always performed immediately after endurance running in the same session (E+S) compared to endurance training alone (E) in recreational endurance runners (n=30) (study 2). In study 1, training consisted of 2 - 3 weekly combined endurance cycling and mixed hypertrophic and maximal strength training se…
Endocrine effects of sauna bath
2020
Sauna bath brings about numerous acute changes in hormone levels, partly akin to other stressful situations, partly specific for sauna. Norepinephrine increases in those accustomed to sauna bath. Sweating increases the production of antidiuretic hormone, and the renin-angiotensin system becomes activated. Of the anterior pituitary hormones, growth hormone (GH) and prolactin (PRL) secretion is increased. Also β-endorphin has been frequently reported to increase, whereas the responses of ACTH and cortisol are variable, probably depending on the type of sauna exposure. Sperm production decreases in particular in sauna-naïve men, but reduced fertility has not been associated with regular sauna …
Kestävyys- ja teholajiurheilijoiden kuormittuminen ja kuormittumisen seuranta lyhyellä aikavälillä
2018
Nikola-Määttä, Sanna (2018). Kestävyys- ja teholajiurheilijoiden kuormittumisen seuranta lyhyellä aikavälillä. Liikuntatieteellinen tiedekunta, Jyväskylän yliopisto, Liikuntafysiologian Pro-Gradu -tutkielma, 69 s. Kuormittumisen seuranta on oleellinen osa urheilijoiden harjoittelua ja valmennusta. Ylikuormitus on yleisempää yksilölajeissa kuin joukkuelajeissa. Kestävyyslajien edustajilla on todettu olevan suurempi riski sairastua ylikuormitustilaan.
2015
Riikka Keskinen (2015). Plyometrisen kuormituksen akuutit fysiologiset ja biomekaaniset vasteet nuorilla ja ikääntyneillä naisilla. Liikuntabiologian laitos, Jyväskylän yliopisto, Liikuntafysiologian Pro gradu – tutkielma, 70 s. Ikääntyminen lisää sarkopenian todennäköisyyttä minkä lisäksi osteoporoosin ja lähes kaikkien muiden sairauksien riski kasvaa. Etenkin suurten ikäluokkien ikääntymisen myötä yhteiskunnalle aiheutuu suuria kustannuksia sosiaali- ja terveyspalveluille. Tämän vuoksi tarvitaan keinoja ennaltaehkäistä ikääntyvien fysiologisia muutoksia sekä sairauksia ja parantamaan heidän elämänlaatuaan. Oikealla liikunnalla voidaan saavuttaa mittavia tuloksia ikääntyneidenkin terveydes…
