Spatial distribution of phytoplankton and picocyanobacteria in Lake Tanganyika in March and April 1998

2003

The spatial distribution of phytoplankton and picocyanobacteria was studied in Lake Tanganyika in relation to environmental factors. Sampling was conducted within three weeks during the wet season of 1998 when the water column stratification was most stable. The secchi depth varied between 11 and 16 m, except off the river Malagarasi (3 m). The depth of the euphotic zone was 33 to 56 m. Altogether, 218 phytoplankton taxa were identified. Their total biomass varied between 13 and 88 mg m−3 fresh weight. Picocyanobacteria were present at very high densities (104 to 6 × 10 5 cells ml−1). The influence of the river Malagarasi appeared to spread along the water surface because of the lower densi…

Monitoring of Cueva Larga, Puerto Rico—A First Step to Decode Speleothem Climate Records

2017

This study presents results of an ongoing cave monitoring program at Cueva Larga, Puerto Rico. The monitoring includes monthly analyses of stable isotope ratios of rain and drip water, and trace element ratios of drip water and cave air parameters. Drip sites are above growing speleothems offering the unique chance to calibrate geochemical variations in speleothems in order to reconstruct past climate conditions. Seasonal rainfall patterns above Cueva Larga show characteristic stable isotope values. The wet season is characterized by more negative δ18O and δD values and a maritime deuterium excess (+10‰). The dry season has more positive δ18O and δD values and elevated deuterium excess (>15…

The influence of the momentum coefficient and the number of the averaging points of the power spectrum density on the recognition effectiveness of th…

2006

The subject matter of this paper refers to the next stage of the research work connected with the improvement of the acoustic emission method (AE) used for the evaluation of partial discharges (PDs) generated in paper-oil insulation systems of high-voltage power appliances. The subject matter discussed here refers to one of the aspects of the analysis of the signals registered - a correct and effective recognition of the AE signals generated by basic PD forms. The paper presents research results of the application of the unidirectional artificial neuron networks (ANN) used for the recognition of basic PD forms that can occur in paper-oil insulation impaired by aging processes.

Olive yield as a function of soil moisture dynamics

2011

This study introduces a water-driven crop model aiming to quantitatively link olive yield to climate and soil moisture dynamics using an ecohydrological approach. A mathematical model describing soil moisture, evapotranspiration and assimilation dynamics of olive orchards is developed here. The model is able to explicitly reproduce two different hydroclimatic phases in Mediterranean areas: the well-watered conditions in which evapotranspiration and assimilation assume their maximum values and the real conditions where the limitations induced by soil moisture availability are taken into account. Annual olive yield is obtained by integrating the carbon assimilation during the growing season, …

Source shape and data analysis procedure effects on hydraulic conductivity of a sandy-loam soil determined by ponding infiltration runs

2017

Performing ponding infiltration runs with non-circular sources could represent a good means to sample completely an area of interest. Regardless of the shape of the source, predicting the expected reliability of the collected data by infiltrometers should facilitate soil hydraulic characterisation and also allow a more conscious use of the field data. The influence of the shape of the infiltration source (i.e., circular or square) and the analysis procedure of the steady-state infiltration data on the saturated hydraulic conductivity, Ks, of a sandy-loam soil was tested in this investigation. Circular and square surfaces sampled with the pressure infiltrometer (PI) yielded similar estimates…

The relationship between the Sahelian and previous 2nd Guinean rainy seasons: a monsoon regulation by soil wetness?

2002

The correlation of 0.61 found between observed July–September Sahelian rainfall in year 0 and September–November Guinean rainfall in year - 1, led us to explore the statistical relationships between precipitation, soil moisture and near surface Moist Static Energy (MSE) gradients in West Africa. These analyses were performed over successive 30-year periods and specifically, the most recent period between 1968–1998. It is shown from observations, National Centers for Environmental Predictions and National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) reanalyses and from the Global Soil Wetness Project (GSWP) database, that wet Sahelian rainy seasons are preceded by abnormally wet soils over th…
