Novel route in the synthesis of MCM-41 containing framework aluminum and its characterization

1999

Abstract Mesoporous molecular sieve MCM-41 with incorporated structural aluminum (Al-MCM-41) was prepared by hydrolysis of a solution of tetraethoxysilane and aluminum isopropoxide in the presence of ammonia as a catalyst. This method provides Al-MCM-41 of different Si/Al ratios from 13 to 297 corresponding to 0.3–7 mol% Al within an hour. X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption measurements showed that the Al-MCM-41 prepared by this method had a highly ordered structure of pore arrays. Most Al atoms in these samples were incorporated tetrahedrally in the MCM-41 structure, which gave rise to cationic sites in the framework.

Hemin-coupled iron(III)-hydroxide nanoparticles show increased uptake in Caco-2 cells

2011

Abstract Objectives The absorption of commonly used ferrous iron salts from intestinal segments at neutral to slightly alkaline pH is low, mainly because soluble ferrous iron is easily oxidized to poorly soluble ferric iron and ferrous iron but not ferric iron is carried by the divalent metal transporter DMT-1. Moreover, ferrous iron frequently causes gastrointestinal side effects. In iron(III)-hydroxide nanoparticles hundreds of ferric iron atoms are safely packed in nanoscaled cores surrounded by a solubilising carbohydrate shell, yet bioavailability from such particles is insufficient when compared with ferrous salts. To increase their intestinal uptake iron(III)-hydroxide nanoparticles …

Hybrid magnetic materials formed by ferritin intercalated into a layered double hydroxide

2008

A hybrid magnetic material formed by ferritin intercalated into a layered double hydroxide (LDH) of Mg and Al (Mg/Al molar ratio 2) is prepared and characterized through powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). One observes an enhancement in the thermal stability of the ferritin molecules when they are inserted in the layered material. Magnetic measurements of the hybrid material exhibit the typical superparamagnetic behaviour of the ferritin molecule. On the other hand, the intercalation of ferritin into the LDH guarante…

Intercalation of [M(ox)3]3− (M=Cr, Rh) complexes into NiIIFeIII-LDH

2010

Abstract Layered Double Hydroxides (LDH) containing paramagnetic NiII and FeIII ions in the hydroxide layers and chromium or rhodium oxalate complexes at the interlayer space were prepared by ion exchange from a NiFe-LDH precursor with sebacate anions between the hydroxide layers. The precursor was synthesized by coprecipitation at controlled pH in order to avoid the formation of solid phases different from LDH. Magnetic studies demonstrated that both LDHs, NiFe–Cr(ox)3 and NiFe–Rh(ox)3, exhibited a behaviour similar to the precursor. Nevertheless, the substitution of intercalated sebacate anions with oxalate complexes compresses the LDH basal spacing, increasing the intensity of dipolar in…

Intercalation of cobalt(II)-tetraphenylporphine tetrasulfonate complex in magnetic NiFe-layered double hydroxide

2013

Abstract Hybrid magnetic multilayers have been synthesized by means of intercalation of [5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrinato]cobalt(II) (CoTPPS) complex in the interlayer space of a Ni II Fe III layered double hydroxide (LDH), through anion-exchange reaction. A sebacate ( − OOC–(CH 2 ) 8 –COO − ) intercalated NiFe-LDH have been used as precursor, facilitating the anion exchange reaction, thus permitting the inclusion of a paramagnetic macrocycle inside the ferrimagnetic NiFe-LDH layers. The material has been characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, SQUID and ESR. The T c for the hybrid NiFe–CoTPPS, ca. 11–12 K, is very close to that shown by the precursor, despite that the intercala…

Assessment of the influence of counter ions on biosorption of copper cations in brewer's spent grain - Waste product generated during beer brewing pr…

2019

Abstract The influence that conditioning leached ground barley grain (known as “brewer's spent grain” (BSG)) has on the effectiveness of copper cation sorption was analysed. Saturation with counter ions of functional groups present on the grain surface was carried out in hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide, sodium and calcium chloride solutions. For comparison, BSG was also conditioned in demineralised water. Spent barley grain is a by-product of the brewing industry which can be used as a biosorbent in the removal of heavy metals from waste water. Emphasis is placed on the effect of competitive sorption of copper and hydrogen cations and the negative influence of a solution alkalinisation …

Weak alkali and alkaline earth metal complexes of low molecular weight ligands in aqueous solution

2008

This work is aimed at reviewing the chemical literature dealing with thermodynamic aspects of the weak complex formation (species with log K values less than about 3) between alkali and alkaline earth metal ions with low molecular weight inorganic and organic ligands in aqueous solution. The following ligands (up to hexavalent anions) were examined in detail: (i) hydroxide, chloride, sulfate, carbonate and phosphate as inorganic, and (ii) carboxylates, amines, amino acids, complexones and nucleotides as organic ligands. The paper also identifies the main reasons responsible for the dispersion of the stability data on ion pairs in the literature. When possible, the trend of stability for the…

Efficacy of the NaviTip FX irrigation needle in removing calcium hydroxide from root canal

2012

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of the NaviTip FX, brush-covered irrigation needle, in removing calcium hydroxide from the root canal. Study Design: Thirty single-rooted teeth were randomly divided into three groups: A - irrigation with a hypodermic needle inserted as far as possible without binding and activation with #30 K-type file; B - Irrigation with a hypodermic needle without activation; C - irrigation with NaviTip FX needle. Sodium hypoclorite 1% was used in irrigation. The root canals were examined trough scanning electron microscopy. Calcium hydroxide removal was recorded at 1, 5, and 10mm from the working length (WL) and the data were analysed using one-way ANOVA test (p…
