Fluorescence of rubidium in a submicrometer vapor cell: spectral resolution of atomic transitions between Zeeman sublevels in a moderate magnetic fie…
2005
It is experimentally demonstrated that use of an extremely thin cell (ETC) with the thickness of a Rb atomic vapor column of ∼400 nm allows one to resolve a large number of individual transitions between Zeeman sublevels of the D1 line of 87Rb and 85Rb in the sub-Doppler fluorescence excitation spectra in an external magnetic field of ∼200 G. It is revealed that due to the peculiarities of the Zeeman effect for different hyperfine levels of Rb, all allowed transitions between magnetic sublevels can be clearly resolved for 87RbF_g = 1 --> F_e = 1, 2 and F_g = 2 --> F_e = 1, 2 fluorescence excitation. Also, relatively good spectral resolution can be achieved for 85RbF_g = 2 --> F_e = 2, 3 flu…
Hyperfine transitions in the first overtone mode of hydrogen deuteride
2020
Beyond the metrology and computational challenges associated with molecular hydrogen, key data are expected to assess the physics of simple molecular systems, and even the new physics beyond the standard model. To assist the deciphering of Doppler-free spectra obtained at very high accuracy ($\ensuremath{\sim}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}9})$, we report on hyperfine transitions of HD in the lowest vibrational levels of the ground electronic state. Using the spin-rotation, nuclear spin-spin, and quadrupolar hyperfine couplings determined by means of high-level quantum-chemical calculations, the hyperfine energy levels and the associated line intensity have been obtained by using tensorial momentum al…
Transition cancellations of 87Rb and 85Rb atoms in a magnetic field
2020
We have analyzed the magnetic field dependencies of the intensities of all the optical transitions between magnetic sublevels of hyperfine levels, excited with σ + , π , and σ − polarized light, for the D 1 and D 2 lines of 87 R b and 85 R b atoms. Depending on the type of transition and the quantum numbers of the involved levels, the Hamiltonian matrices are of 1 × 1 , 2 × 2 , 3 × 3 , or 4 × 4 dimension. As an example, analytical expressions are presented for the case of 2 × 2 dimension matrices for the D 1 line of both isotopes. Eigenvalues and eigenkets are given, and the expression for the transition intensity as a function of B has been determined. It is found that some π transitions o…
Observation of the hyperfine transition in lithium-like bismuthBi20980+: Towards a test of QED in strong magnetic fields
2014
We performed a laser spectroscopic determination of the $2s$ hyperfine splitting (HFS) of Li-like ${}^{209}{\text{Bi}}^{80+}$ and repeated the measurement of the $1s$ HFS of H-like ${}^{209}{\text{Bi}}^{82+}$. Both ion species were subsequently stored in the Experimental Storage Ring at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum f\"ur Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt and cooled with an electron cooler at a velocity of $\ensuremath{\approx}0.71\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}c$. Pulsed laser excitation of the $M1$ hyperfine transition was performed in anticollinear and collinear geometry for ${\text{Bi}}^{82+}$ and ${\text{Bi}}^{80+}$, respectively, and observed by fluorescence detection. We obtain $\ensuremath{\De…
Relativistic J-dependence of the isotope shift in the 6s-6p doublet of Ba II
1984
The collinear laser-ion beam technique has been used to measure the isotope shift and hyperfine structure in the 6s-6p doublet (4,934A, 4,554A) of Ba II for all seven stable isotopes. The influence of the excited2P1/2 and2P3/2 states on the field shift leads to a difference of 2.5(3)% in the electronicF factors. The specific mass shifts differ by {A′-A} 2.2(3) MHz which corresponds to about 12% of the normal mass shift.
An improved value for the hyperfine splitting of hydrogen-like209Bi82+
2015
We report an improved measurement of the hyperfine splitting in hydrogen-like bismuth (209Bi82+) at the experimental storage ring ESR at GSI by laser spectroscopy on a coasting beam. Accuracy was improved by about an order of magnitude compared to the first observation in 1994. The most important improvement is an in situ high voltage measurement at the electron cooler (EC) platform with an accuracy at the 10 ppm level. Furthermore, the space charge effect of the EC current on the ion velocity was determined with two independent techniques that provided consistent results. The result of nm provides an important reference value for experiments testing bound-state quantum electrodynamics in t…
Towards Laser Spectroscopy of Superheavy Elements
2016
The sensitivity of laser spectroscopic methods has been increased over the past two decades dramatically so that today the spectroscopy of superheavy elements appears on the horizon as a realistic option. For elements with Z > 100 no experimental atomic or ionic level structure information is known so far. These elements cannot be bread in high flux nuclear power reactors via successive neutron capture and \(\beta ^-\) decay but must be produced in accelerator-based nuclear fusion-evaporation reactions. Laser spectroscopic investigations at low rates take advantage of the storage of ions or atoms in rare gas traps. A first successful experiment was conducted only recently for the element no…
Dependence of the shapes of nonzero-field level-crossing signals in rubidium atoms on the laser frequency and power density
2013
We studied magneto-optical resonances caused by excited-state level crossings in a nonzero magnetic field. Experimental measurements were performed on the transitions of the ${D}_{2}$ line of rubidium. These measured signals were described by a theoretical model that takes into account all neighboring hyperfine transitions, the mixing of magnetic sublevels in an external magnetic field, the coherence properties of the exciting laser radiation, and the Doppler effect. Good agreement between the experimental measurements and the theoretical model could be achieved over a wide range of laser power densities. We further showed that the contrasts of the level-crossing peaks can be sensitive to c…
Double-resonance measurements of isotope shifts and hyperfine structure in Gd I with hyperfine-state selection in an intermediate level
2000
Isotope shifts and hyperfine structure have been measured in the 4f7 5d6s2 9D6 -- X9 D6 (;38 024. 9 cm-1) transition in atomic gadolinium using high- resolution resonance ionization mass spectroscopy. Excitation was performed as a resonance-enhanced two-photon transition with the 4f7 5d6s6p 9F7 state as an intermediate level. Selective population of hyperfine states in the first excitation step allowed assignment of all transitions in the complex hyperfine spectrum of the odd isotopes 155,157Gd and evaluation of the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole hyperfine structure constants for the X 9D6 state. Measured values for the isotope shifts of all stable Gd isotopes have been used to der…
Nonlinear effects in optical pumping of a cold and slow atomic beam
2015
By photoionizing hyperfine (HF) levels of the Cs state $6{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{2}{P}_{3/2}$ in a slow and cold atom beam, we find how their population depends on the excitation laser power. The long time (around $180\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{s})$ spent by the slow atoms inside the resonant laser beam is large enough to enable exploration of a unique atom-light interaction regime heavily affected by time-dependent optical pumping. We demonstrate that, under such conditions, the onset of nonlinear effects in the population dynamics and optical pumping occurs at excitation laser intensities much smaller than the conventional respective saturation values. The ev…
