CH4 oxidation in a boreal lake during the development of hypolimnetic hypoxia

2020

AbstractFreshwater ecosystems represent a significant natural source of methane (CH4). CH4 produced through anaerobic decomposition of organic matter (OM) in lake sediment and water column can be either oxidized to carbon dioxide (CO2) by methanotrophic microbes or emitted to the atmosphere. While the role of CH4 oxidation as a CH4 sink is widely accepted, neither the magnitude nor the drivers behind CH4 oxidation are well constrained. In this study, we aimed to gain more specific insight into CH4 oxidation in the water column of a seasonally stratified, typical boreal lake, particularly under hypoxic conditions. We used 13CH4 incubations to determine the active CH4 oxidation sites and the …

Effects of low load exercise with and without blood-flow restriction on microvascular oxygenation, muscle excitability and perceived pain

2022

This paper aimed to examine the acute effect of low-load (LL) exercise with blood-flow restriction (LL-BFR) on microvascular oxygenation and muscle excitability of the vastus medialis (VM) and vastus lateralis (VL) muscles during a single bout of unilateral knee extension exercise performed to task failure. Seventeen healthy recreationally resistance-trained males were enrolled in a within-group randomized cross-over study design. Participants performed one set of unilateral knee extensions at 20% of one-repetition maximum (1RM) to task failure, using a LL-BFR or LL free-flow (LL-FF) protocol in a randomized order on separate days. Changes in oxygenation and muscle excitability in VL and VM…

Akuuttihypoksiaharjoittelun vaikutukset akklimatisaatioon sekä suorituskykyyn hypoksiakuormituksessa

2002

Petri Andersson. Akuuttihypoksiaharjoittelun vaikutukset akklimatisaatioon sekä suorituskykyyn hypoksiakuormituksessa. Liikuntafysiologian Pro Gradu - tutkielma. 2002. Liikuntabiologian laitos. Jyväskylän yliopisto. Matalahappiharjoittelua eli hypoksiaharjoittelua on käytetty kestävyysurheilussa useita vuosia tärkeimpinä päämäärinä joko lisätä elimistön punasolumassaa ja siten hapenkuljetuskapasiteettia tai sopeutua korkealla käytäviä kilpailuja varten parantamalla elimistön toiminnallisia vasteita hypoksiaolosuhteissa. Kuitenkin tutkimustulokset erilaisista hypoksiaharjoittelun strategioista ja niiden hyödyllisyydestä varsinkin merenpinnan tason eli normoksian suorituskykyyn ovat olleet ri…

Effect of low dissolved oxygen on the viability of juvenile Margaritifera margaritifera : Hypoxia tolerance ex situ

2022

The decline of endangered freshwater pearl mussel (FPM, Margaritifera margaritifera) has been attributed to juvenile mortality caused by low concentrations of dissolved oxygen in the stream substrate resulting from fine sediments (siltation) that impede water exchange in the interstitial microhabitat of juveniles. If low oxygen concentration causes recruitment failure of FPMs, knowledge on the oxygen tolerance of juvenile FPMs is essential for the conservation of the species, as it will justify conservation efforts improving water exchange in the bottom gravel. However, the tolerance of low oxygen of FPM juveniles has not been directly studied. Juvenile FPMs (9–11 months old) were exposed i…

Constructing endothelial-specific hypoxia-regulated vectors

2013

Soluspesifinen geenien ilmentyminen on molekyylibiologian yksi suurista tutkimusalueista. Geenit aktivoituvat eri solutyypeissä eri tavoin, vaikka soluissa on sama geneettinen perimä. Endot…

Effects of Repeated Sprint Training in Hypoxia on Physical Performance Among Athletes : A Systematic Review

2021

Repeated sprint training in hypoxia (RSH) represents an innovative method in the process of development and improvement of physical performance among athletes. However, there is less scientific data on this topic. The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate the effect of RSH method on motor abilities and performance among athletes, obtain new information, and expand the already known conclusions. The data search was performed of 4 electronic databases for the years 2000-2021 May as follows: Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science, and ResearchGate. This search with English language restriction was made by using the following terms, individually/combination: "repeated sprint abil…
