Early Plasmodium-induced inflammation does not accelerate aging in mice

2019

10 pages; International audience; Aging is associated with a decline of performance leading to reduced reproductive output and survival. While the antagonistic pleiotropy theory of aging has attracted considerable attention, the molecular/physiological functions underlying the early-life benefits/late-life costs paradigm remain elusive. We tested the hypothesis that while early activation of the inflammatory response confers benefits in terms of protection against infection, it also incurs costs in terms of reduced reproductive output at old age and shortened longevity. We infected mice with the malaria parasite Plasmodium yoelii and increased the inflammatory response using an anti-IL-10 r…

Metodologia della ricerca sociale e politiche pubbliche

2020

In this chapter we review the main concepts that must be mastered by the good public policy evaluator and the tools that must be part of his toolbox. In dealing with causation and experiment we will see how in the field of social sciences it is necessary to use some precautions to design good evaluative rese…

Fault Diagnosis for Nonlinear Hydraulic-Mechanical Drilling Pipe Handling System

2011

Leakage and increased friction are common faults in hydraulic cylinders that can have serious consequences if they are not detected at early stage. In this paper, the design of a fault detector for a nonlinear hydraulic mechanical system is presented. By considering the system in steady state, two residual signals are generated and analysed with a composite hypothesis test which accommodates for unknown parameters. The resulting detector is able to detect abrupt changes in leakage or friction given the noisy pressure and position measurements. Test rig measurements validate the properties of residuals and high fidelity simulation and experimental results demonstrate the performance and feas…

Rejection odds and rejection ratios: A proposal for statistical practice in testing hypotheses

2016

Much of science is (rightly or wrongly) driven by hypothesis testing. Even in situations where the hypothesis testing paradigm is correct, the common practice of basing inferences solely on p-values has been under intense criticism for over 50 years. We propose, as an alternative, the use of the odds of a correct rejection of the null hypothesis to incorrect rejection. Both pre-experimental versions (involving the power and Type I error) and post-experimental versions (depending on the actual data) are considered. Implementations are provided that range from depending only on the p-value to consideration of full Bayesian analysis. A surprise is that all implementations -- even the full Baye…

Statistical validation of rival models for observable stochastic process and its identification

2011

In this paper, for statistical validation of rival (analytical or simulation) models collected for modeling observable process in stochastic system (say, transportation or service system), a uniformly most powerful invariant (UMPI) test is developed from the generalized maximum likelihood ratio (GMLR). This test can be considered as a result of a new approach to solving the Behrens-Fisher problem when covariance matrices of multivariate normal populations (compared with respect to their means) are different and unknown. The test makes use of an invariant statistic whose distribution, under the null hypothesis, does not depend on the unknown (nuisance) parameters. The sample size and thresho…

A Unified Approach to Portfolio Optimization with Linear Transaction Costs

2004

In this paper we study the continuous time optimal portfolio selection problem for an investor with a finite horizon who maximizes expected utility of terminal wealth and faces transaction costs in the capital market. It is well known that, depending on a particular structure of transaction costs, such a problem is formulated and solved within either stochastic singular control or stochastic impulse control framework. In this paper we propose a unified framework, which generalizes the contemporary approaches and is capable to deal with any problem where transaction costs are a linear/piecewise-linear function of the volume of trade. We also discuss some methods for solving numerically the p…

Historischer Überblick zur mathematischen Theorie von Unstetigkeitswellen seit Riemann und Christoffel

1981

We give a brief historical account of the development of the mathematical theory of propagation of discontinuities in gases, fluids or elastic materials. The theory was initiated by Riemann who investigated the propagation of shocks in one-dimensional isentropic gas flow. Riemann’s results were used by Christoffel to treat, more generally, the propagation of (first order) discontinuity surfaces in three-dimensional flows of perfect fluids. Subsequently Christoffel applied his general theory to first order waves in certain elastic materials. Independently of Riemann and Christoffel significant contributions were made by Hugoniot. The theory was completed in Hadamard’s celebrated monograph [3…

On Riemann’s Ideas on Space and Schwinger’s Treatment of Low-Energy Pion-Nucleon Physics

2020

We begin with a demonstration of how great an influence Riemann’s habilitation essay had on the development of field theory. His ideas about the origin of physical space and the importance of a metric field were clearly outlined as early as 1854, and praised highly by the old C.F. Gauss, who died 1 year later. There is but one formula in Riemann’s article. This formula and its relevance will be explained at the beginning of the present chapter. The basic principle which is omnipresent in Riemann’s entire work is to understand the physical behavior of nature from its smallness. Hence partial differential equations stand at the beginning of any field theory. In our case, it is not the metric …

New Types of Jacobian-Free Approximate Riemann Solvers for Hyperbolic Systems

2017

We present recent advances in PVM (Polynomial Viscosity Matrix) methods based on internal approximations to the absolute value function. These solvers only require a bound on the maximum wave speed, so no spectral decomposition is needed. Moreover, they can be written in Jacobian-free form, in which only evaluations of the physical flux are used. This is particularly interesting when considering systems with complex Jacobians, as the relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD) equations. The proposed solvers have also been extended to the case of approximate DOT (Dumbser-Osher-Toro) methods, which can be regarded as simple and efficient approximations to the classical Osher-Solomon method. Som…
