Levothyroxine and insulin requirement in autoimmune polyglandular type 3 syndrome: a real-life study

Abstract Purpose To evaluate factors influencing the insulin and levothyroxine requirement in patients with autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type 3 (APS-3) vs. patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and autoimmune hypothyroidism (AH) alone, respectively. Methods Fifty patients with APS-3, 60 patients with T1DM and 40 patients with AH were included. Anthropometric, clinical and biochemical parameters were evaluated in all patients. Insulin requirement was calculated in patients with APS-3 and T1DM, while levothyroxine requirement was calculated in APS-3 and AH. The Congenital Hypothyroidism Screening Programme in a Sigle Italian Centre: A 5-Years Retrospective Study

Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) occurs in approximately 1:2,000-1:3,000 newborns in Italy. Lowering of the TSH cut-off was the most important factor contributing to the increase of CH incidence in Italy. The aim of this study is the determination of the prevalence of CH in northwest Sicily, evaluated by the single screening centre of the Children Hospital “G. Di Cristina”, ARNAS, Palermo. From January 2013 to December 2017, 79.699 newborns were screened testing TSH from blood spots. A Novel Homozygous Mutation in the Solute Carrier Family 26 Member 7 Gene Causes Thyroid Dyshormonogenesis in a Girl with Congenital Hypothyroidism

We investigated the genetic cause of thyroid dyshormonogenesis in a girl with congenital hypothyroidism. Genetic analysis showed that she was homozygous for a hitherto not described mutation (c.1432_1433delGT, p.V478KfsX11) in the solute carrier family 26 member 7 (SLC26A7) gene. SLC26A7 is proposed to be an anion transporter in the thyroid gland. The mutation leads to a frameshift and a premature stop codon. The predicted protein is truncated and very likely to be nonfunctional if it was expressed at all. In addition, in silico studies predict the mutation to be pathogenic.

OBJECTIVE: Thyroid disorders, especially Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT), are observed significantly more often in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) than in the general population – approximately 27% and 8%, respectively. This is extremely important in young women, because both disorders are connected with fertility problems. As HT and PCOS occur together, fertility problems may become a serious clinical issue in these patients. Resistance to thyroid hormones (RTH) is a rare condition of reduced activity of thyroid hormones on peripheral tissues and/or reduced suppression of TSH secretion by thyroid hormones. Behavioural correlates of early-treated congenital hypothyroidism

Parents' and teachers' ratings were used to evaluate the behavioural characteristics of children with early-treated congenital hypothyroidism (CH). Comparisons were made between 63 children with early-treated CH and 34 healthy controls at the ages of 7.5 and 9.5 y. Additional comparisons were made between the two largest CH subgroups (thyroid agenesis, thyroid dysgenesis) and controls. The most marked differences were found on the introversion cluster and the motor clumsiness scale within it.
