The Evolution of Disk Winds from a Combined Study of Optical and Infrared Forbidden Lines

2020

We analyze high-resolution (dv=<10km/s) optical and infrared spectra covering the [OI] 6300 angstrom and [NeII] 12.81 micron lines from a sample of 31 disks in different evolutionary stages. Following work at optical wavelengths, we use Gaussian profiles to fit the [NeII] lines and classify them into HVC (LVC) if the line centroid is more (less) blueshifted than 30 km/s with respect to the stellar radial velocity. Unlike for the [OI] where a HVC is often accompanied by a LVC, all 17 sources with a [NeII] detection have either a HVC or a LVC. [NeII] HVCs are preferentially detected toward high accretors (Macc > 10$^{-8}$ Msun/yr) while LVCs are found in sources with low Macc, low [OI] …

Expression of B-Cell Activating Factor Enhances Protective Immunity of a Vaccine against Pseudomonas aeruginosa

2009

ABSTRACT B-cell activating factor (BAFF), a member of the TNF family, is a potent cytokine with stimulatory effects on B and T cells. To evaluate the potential of transient overexpression of BAFF to enhance vaccine immunogenicity, a replication-deficient adenovirus expressing full-length murine BAFF (AdBAFF) was tested in a mouse vaccine model against Pseudomonas aeruginosa . When coadministered with heat-killed P. aeruginosa , AdBAFF mediated a significant increase in anti- P. aeruginosa- specific serum and lung mucosal antibodies and resulted in improved protection against a lethal respiratory challenge with P. aeruginosa . This effect was independent of the site of administration of AdBA…

Polyanion–tobramycin nanocomplexes into functional microparticles for the treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in cystic fibrosis

2016

Aim: Efficacy of antibiotics in cystic fibrosis (CF) is compromised by the poor penetration through mucus barrier. This work proposes a new ‘nano-into-micro’ approach, used to obtain a combinatorial effect: achieve a sustained delivery of tobramycin and overcome mucus barrier. Methods: Mannitol microparticles (MPs) were loaded with a tobramycin polymeric nanocomplex and characterized in presence of CF artificial mucus. Results & discussion: MPs are able to alter the rheological properties of CF artificial mucus, enhancing drug penetration into it and allowing a prolonged drug release. MPs resulted to be effective in Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections if compared with free tobramycin. Co…

Nanometric ion pair complexes of tobramycin forming microparticles for the treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in cystic fibrosis

2019

Abstract Sustained pulmonary delivery of tobramycin from microparticles composed of drug/polymer nanocomplexes offers several advantages against traditional delivery methods. Namely, in patients with cystic fibrosis, microparticle delivery can protect the tobramycin being delivered from strong mucoadhesive interactions, thus avoiding effects on its diffusion toward the infection site. Polymeric ion-pair complexes were obtained starting from two synthetic polyanions, through impregnation of their solid dissociated forms with tobramycin in aqueous solution. The structure of these polymeric systems was characterized, and their activities were examined against various biofilm-forming Pseudomona…

The use of video-assisted thoracic surgery in the management of Pancoast tumours

2010

We describe our experience using video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) as an adjunct to the surgical management of Pancoast tumors. Between March 2004 and November 2009, 13 patients with Pancoast tumors were included in this study. Surgery was performed by positioning the patient to allow either an anterior or a posterior thoracotomy. VATS was employed to explore the pleural cavity, to optimize the surgical access and as an assistance during surgical resection. Three patients with pleural carcinosis at thoracoscopy did not undergo further surgery. Seven lobectomies and three wedge resections were performed with an en bloc chest-wall resection and mediastinal lymphadenectomy. The surgical a…

Paraneoplastische limbische Enzephalitis bei kleinzelligem Bronchialkarzinom

2004

We report about a 63-year-old male patient who complained of a recent onset of confusion. A mediastinal mass had been detected in his chest X-ray three days before admission to our clinic. Surprisingly, a CT scan of the brain revealed no signs of cerebral masses or oedema. MRI demonstrated bright hyperintens signals in the medial aspect of both temporal lobes. Biopsy by mediastinoscopy showed small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC). No distant metastases were found by staging procedures. Cerebrospinal fluid and serum contained antineuronal antibodies (anti-Hu). The combination of symptoms, MRI findings and paraneoplastic antibodies established the diagnosis of paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis in…

Extreme nucleoside concentrations in a marine annelid: a novel nucleoside storing cell in the polychaete Nereis virens.

2010

A new type of free coelomic cell was isolated from the coelomic fluid of the polychaete Nereis virens. This cell type was present only during sexual maturation and only in males with fully developed spermatozoa. In vivo acridine orange staining and electron microscopy showed that this cell type consists mainly of a large acidic vacuole with a very low proportion of cytoplasm. This cell type stores extremely high concentration of purine nucleosides reaching concentrations of >700 millimolar on a cell weight basis. The nucleoside concentrations are the highest reported from any living cell so far. Inosine (280-711 micromol/g cell mass), guanosine (8-109 micromol/g), deoxyinosine (3-26 micromo…
