Susceptibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates to ceftazidime is unrelated to the expression of the outer membrane protein OprC.

Previously, it has been postulated that the porin OprC facilitates the diffusion of ceftazidime through the outer membrane of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. To further investigate this claim, the outer membrane protein (OMP) profiles of 22 ceftazidime-susceptible clinical isolates were analyzed. No correlation was found between MIC values and the level of expression of OprC. Further, OprC was either undetectable or expressed in reduced amounts in 12 isolates. In contrast, OprF and OprE were present in all isolates studied. This study suggests that OprC is dispensable for the permeation of ceftazidime through the outer membrane of P. aeruginosa.

Phosphatidylinositol 4-kinases (PI4K) catalyze the first step in the synthesis of phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate, an important lipid regulator of several cellular functions. Here we show that the Ca(2+)-binding protein, neuronal calcium sensor-1 (NCS-1), can physically associate with the type III PI4Kbeta with functional consequences affecting the kinase. Recombinant PI4Kbeta, but not its glutathione S-transferase-fused form, showed enhanced PI kinase activity when incubated with recombinant NCS-1, but only if the latter was myristoylated. Uridine enhances the cytotoxic effect of D-glucosamine in rat C6 glioma cells.

This paper studies the influence of uridine on the effects exerted by D-glucosamine in rat C6 glioma cells. 2 mM uridine increased markedly both the cytotoxic effect of the aminosugar and the inhibition of thymidine incorporation into acid-insoluble fraction. Furthermore the complete resumption of the capacity to incorporate either 3H-thymidine or 3H-mannose which was observed after the removal of the aminosugar, was impeded when the cells were treated contemporaneously with D-glucosamine and uridine. An exposure for 4 hr to 20 mM glucosamine alone enhanced about 15-fold the cellular pool of UDP-N-acetylhexosamines; the addition of 2 mM uridine intensified the expansion of this pool, which …

Abstract Memory formation of activated CD8 T cells is the result of a specific combination of signals that promote long-term survival and inhibit differentiation into effector cells. Much is known about initial cues that drive memory formation, but it is poorly understood which signals are essential during the intermediate stages before terminal differentiation. Estrogen-induced cell signalling in a cellular model of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterised by deposition of a 4 kDa amyloid-beta peptide (Abeta) into senile plaques of the affected brain. Abeta is a proteolytic product of the membrane protein, amyloid precursor protein (APP). An alternative cleavage pathway involves alpha-secretase activity and results in secretion of a 100 kDa non-amyloidogenic APP (sAPPalpha) and therefore a potential reduction in Abeta secretion. Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 1 (TREM-1) is an important mediator of innate inflammatory responses in microbial infections and sepsis. TREM-1 ligation on neutrophils (PMN) or monocytes results in the production of proinflammatory cytokines. The paper reports on the volatile components oil from aerial parts of two Asteraceae growing wild in Croatia: Centaurea spinosociliata ssp. cristata (syn. Centaurea cristata Bartl. subsp. rabenhorstiana (Sch.Bip.) Nyman) (CSC) and C. spinosociliata ssp. spinosociliata (CSS). The volatile components were obtained by hydrodistillation from selected plants and were determined by the GC-MS system on two fused-silica capillary columns of different polarity. The oil content was 0.08 % (CSC) and 0.07 % (CSS) on a dry weight basis.
