Sorption and mechanism studies of Cu2+, Sr2+ and Pb2+ ions on mesoporous aluminosilicates/zeolite composite sorbents
2020
Abstract The research aimed to develop a novel mesoporous aluminosilicate/zeolite composite by the template co-precipitation method. The effect of aluminosilicate (AlSi) and zeolite (NaY) on the basic properties and adsorption capacity of the resultant composite was conducted at different mass ratios of AlSi/NaY (i.e., 5/90, 10/80, 15/85, 20/80, and 50/50). The adsorption characteristics of such composite and its feedstock materials (i.e., aluminosilicates and zeolite) towards radioactive Sr2+ ions and toxic metals (Cu2+ and Pb2+ ions) in aqueous solutions were investigated. Results indicated that BET surface area (SBET), total pore volume (VTotal), and mesopore volume (VMeso) of prepared m…
Upgrade of ALICE forward detectors
2019
ALICE will upgrade its subsystems in 2019−2020 to fully benefit from the increased collision rate and luminosity of the LHC at CERN. Two new forward detectors will be installed at the core of ALICE: the Fast Interaction Trigger (FIT) and the Muon Forward Tracker (MFT). Additionally, during the shutdown between Run 3 and Run 4, there will be an opportunity to install the Forward Calorimeter (FoCal). This paper describes these new forward detectors, their physics justification and goals, selected design features along with performance of detector prototypes and simulated performance figures. peerReviewed
Effects of Nonschistosome Larval Trematodes on Biomphalaria Snails
2010
This chapter examines the most salient literature on the development of nonschistosome larval digeneans in Biomphalaria spp. (members of the superfamilies Clinostomoidea, Diplostomoidea, Echinostomatoidea, Paramphistomoidea, and Pronocephaloidea). For this purpose, the general biology of the nonschistosome trematode species that use Biomphalaria spp. as intermediate hosts are analyzed. Thereafter, the main features of these parasitic infections are studied with particular emphasis on topics such as the effect of the infections on the snail, the antagonism and/or competition between different digenean species in the snail, the immunology of the infection, and the genomic and proteomic a…
Multiresistant waterborne pathogens isolated from water reservoirs and cooling systems
2008
Aims: To determine the incidence of multiple antibiotic-resistant strains of the emergent human pathogens Legionella pneumophila, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and mesophilic Aeromonas species among those isolated from water reservoirs and industrial cooling systems. Methods and Results: Water from four natural water reservoirs and four industrial cooling towers was sampled for 1 year period. The total heterotrophs, mesophilic Aeromonas, Pseudomonas spp. and Legionella spp. counts were performed as recommended by standard procedures, and the sensitivity of the isolates to 27 antibiotics was tested. A total of 117 Aeromonas, 60 P. aeruginosa and 15 L. pneumophila strains were isolated and identif…

Characterizing the Invasive Tumor Front of Aggressive Uterine Adenocarcinoma and Leiomyosarcoma
2021
The invasive tumor front (the tumor–host interface) is vitally important in malignant cell progression and metastasis. Tumor cell interactions with resident and infiltrating host cells and with the surrounding extracellular matrix and secreted factors ultimately determine the fate of the tumor. Herein we focus on the invasive tumor front, making an in-depth characterization of reticular fiber scaffolding, infiltrating immune cells, gene expression, and epigenetic profiles of classified aggressive primary uterine adenocarcinomas (24 patients) and leiomyosarcomas (11 patients). Sections of formalin-fixed samples before and after microdissection were scanned and studied. Reticular fiber archit…
Cardiomyopathic lentiginosis: an echo-Doppler report
1995
We report a case of a 64-year-old woman with cardiomyopathic lentiginosis. All the echocardiographic features of a hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy were detected, with an accurate noninvasive measure of the left ventricle outflow gradient.
Expression of angiogenic regulators, VEGF and leptin, is regulated by the EGF/PI3K/STAT3 pathway in colorectal cancer cells.
2009
Both leptin and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) are growth and angiogenic cytokines that are upregulated in different types of cancer and have been implicated in neoplastic progression. Here we investigated the molecular mechanism by which leptin and VEGF expression are regulated in colon cancer by epidermal growth factor (EGF). In colon cancer cell line HT-29, EGF induced the binding of signal transducer and activator transcription 3 (STAT3) to STAT3 consensus motifs within the VEGF and leptin promoters and stimulated leptin and VEGF mRNA and protein synthesis. All these EGF effects were significantly blocked when HT-29 cells were treated with an inhibitor of the phosphoinositide…
Insulin-dependent leptin expression in breast cancer cells.
2008
Abstract Pathologic conditions associated with hyperinsulinemia, such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes, seem to increase the risk of breast cancer. Here, we studied molecular mechanisms by which insulin activates the expression of leptin, an obesity hormone that has been shown to promote breast cancer progression in an autocrine or paracrine way. Using MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells, we found that (a) insulin stimulated leptin mRNA and protein expression, which was associated with increased activation of the leptin gene promoter; (b) insulin increased nuclear accumulation of transcription factors hypoxia inducible factor (HIF)-1α and Sp1 and their loading on the leptin promoter;…
