Oral microbiome in Proliferative Verrucous Leukoplakia exhibits loss of diversity and enrichment of pathogens.
2021
Abstract Objectives Oral microbiome plays an important role in oral diseases. Among them, proliferative verrucous leucoplakia (PVL) is an uncommon form of progressive multifocal leukoplakia with a worryingly rate of malignant transformation. Here, we aimed to characterize the oral microbiome of PVL patients and compare it with those of healthy controls. Material and methods Oral biopsies from ten PVL patients and five healthy individuals were obtained and used to compare their microbial communities. The sequence of the V3-V4 region of 16S rRNA gene was used as the taxonomic basis to estimate and analyze the composition and diversity of bacterial populations present in the samples. Results O…
Induction of tumor-cell lysis by bi-specific antibody recognizing ganglioside GD2 and T-cell antigen CD3
1993
Human tumor cells expressing ganglioside GD2 were lysed by various effector populations targeted with an anti-CD3-anti-GD2 bi-specific antibody (BAb CD3 x GD2). This antibody-heteroconjugate was prepared by chemically cross-linking the OKT-3 monoclonal antibody (MAb) reactive with CD3 antigen on T lymphocytes with the ganglioside MAb ME 361, which binds preferentially to the tumor-associated ganglioside GD2. The specificity of target-cell lysis by the cytotoxic T cells (CTL) was mediated by the specificity of the targeting antibody: GD2-negative cells were not lysed in the presence of the CD3 x GD2 BAb. A dose-dependent response was observed in a range of 10 to 10,000 ng/ml. In contrast, 2 …

Erythropoietin restores the anemia-induced reduction in radiosensitivity of experimental human tumors in nude mice
2003
Abstract Purpose The effect of recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) on the radiosensitivity of human tumor xenografts growing in anemic and nonanemic nude mice was studied. Methods and materials Anemia was induced by total body irradiation ([TBI], 2 × 4 Gy) of mice before tumor implantation into the subcutis of the hind leg. The development of anemia was prevented by rhEPO (750 U/kg s.c.) given 3 times weekly starting 2 weeks before TBI. Fourteen days after fractionated TBI (tumor volume of approx. 40 mm 3 ), single-dose irradiation of the tumor with varying doses was performed so that in full dose–response relationship for the probability of tumor cure was obtained. Results Radiation-i…
Ganglioside GD3 shedding by human malignant melanoma cells
1989
Gangliosides appear to be important target molecules for immunological effector mechanisms on neuro-ectodermal tumors. Therefore in vitro studies were performed to examine whether ganglioside GD3, which is highly expressed on the cell surface of cultured human melanoma cells, is being shed into the culture medium. Measurable quantities of gangliosides GM3 and in particular GD3 were shed by the melanoma cells we have tested as detected on thin-layer chromatograms (TLC) stained with orcinol. Ganglioside GD3 was also evidenced by immunostaining with anti-GD3 MAb and by ELISA. The concentration of GD3 in the supernatant of human melanoma cells depended on the ganglioside pattern of the cell lin…
Primary angiosarcoma of the alveolar mucosa in a haemodialysis patient: case report and discussion
1994
A case of a haemodialysis patient with a primitive angiosarcoma of the alveolar mucosa is reported. The vascular origin of the tumor was confirmed by the immunohistochemical data which showed strong positivity for Factor VIII-related antigen and for vimentin, whereas stains for desmin and cytokeratins were negative.
Immunorecognition of different ganglioside epitopes on human normal and melanoma tissues.
1992
There is increasing evidence that cell-surface gangliosides play a role in tumor growth, progression and metastases. In order to determine the frequency of ganglioside GD3 in patients with metastatic malignant melanoma for further therapeutic trials, GD3 ganglioside expression was determined in 119 tissue samples. Of these melanomas, 93% (111/119) were R-24-positive, which indicates the value of this diagnostic marker for melanoma. To study the structural epitopes of gangliosides, 10 ganglioside antibodies with defined specificities and affinities were tested on over 100 fresh-frozen tissue specimens of human normal and melanoma tissues. All the antibodies tested recognize the ganglioside G…
Registration of childhood cancer: Moving towards pan-European coverage?
2015
Cancer is relatively rare in childhood, but it contributes considerably to childhood mortality, years of life lost per person and late effects in survivors. Large populations need to be covered to set up meaningful studies of these rare conditions. Cancer registries ensure cancer surveillance, thus providing the basis for research as well as policy decisions. In this paper we examine coverage of childhood population by cancer registries in Europe and encourage national cancer registration. Over 200 cancer registries in various stages of development were identified as collecting data on childhood cancer patients in Europe. They cover 52% of the childhood population in the World Health Organi…
Salivary Microbiota Composition in Patients with Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Systematic Review.
2022
Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is one of the most prevalent cancers worldwide. Despite recent advances in diagnosis and treatment, in recent years, an increase in the incidence of OSCC has been registered, and the mortality rate is still high. This systematic review aims to identify a potential association between the composition of salivary microbiota and OSCC. Materials and Methods: The protocol for this study was designed following the PRISMA guidelines. Records were identified using different search engines (e.g., Medline/PubMed). Observational studies, in human subjects with histological diagnosis of OSCC, concerning the analysis of salivary microbiota, were selected. …
