A Symmetry Adapted Approach to the Dynamic Jahn-Teller Problem
2011
In this article we present a symmetry-adapted approach aimed to the accurate solution of the dynamic Jahn-Teller (JT) problem. The algorithm for the solution of the eigen-problem takes full advantage of the point symmetry arguments. The system under consideration is supposed to consist of a set of electronic levels \({\Gamma }_{1},{\Gamma }_{2}\ldots {\Gamma }_{n}\) labeled by the irreducible representations (irreps) of the actual point group, mixed by the active JT and pseudo JT vibrational modes \({\Gamma }_{1},{\Gamma }_{2}\ldots {\Gamma }_{f}\) (vibrational irreps). The bosonic creation operators b +(Γγ) are transformed as components γ of the vibrational irrep Γ. The first excited vibra…
Tracking Autoionizing-Wave-Packet Dynamics at the 1-fs Temporal Scale
2010
We present time-resolved studies and Fourier transform spectroscopy of inner-shell excited states undergoing Auger decay and doubly excited autoionizing states, utilizing coherent extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) radiation continua. Series of states spanning a range of ∼4 eV are excited simultaneously. An XUV probe pulse tracks the oscillatory and decaying evolution of the formed wave packet. The Fourier transform of the measured trace reproduces the spectrum of the series. The present work paves the way for ultrabroadband XUV spectroscopy and studies of ultrafast dynamics in all states of matter.
Hyperfine structure of the 3d34s4p6G multiplet of atomic vanadium
2011
The spectrum of atomic vanadium was recorded using high-resolution Fourier transform spectroscopy with optical bandpass filters in the wavelength range from 360 to 500 nm. Vanadium atoms are produced and excited in a hollow-cathode discharge. The main focus lies on the determination of the magnetic dipole hyperfine constants A of the lowest multiplet of odd parity, the 6G of the configuration 3d34s4p, the hyperfine structure (HFS) of which was unknown to date. The HFS of the lines, connecting this multiplet with the multiplets 3d34s5s 6F, 3d34s4d 6H and 3d34s4d 6G, was observed and analysed. New results are presented for all six levels belonging to 3d34s4p 6G as well as for seven high-lying…
Doppler free ?dark resonances? for hyperfine measurements and isotope shifts in Ca+ isotopes in a Paul trap
1995
We have observed “dark resonances” in theA-type level structure, formed by the 4S1/2 ground state, the 4P1/2 excited state and the low lying metastable 3D3/2 state in the Calcium ion, confined in a Paul radio-frequency trap. These Doppler-free and potentially very narrow resonances were used to determine the magnetic dipole hyperfine interaction constant A for the 4P1/2 and 3D3/2 state of43Ca+, giving −142(8) MHz and −48.3(1.6) MHz, respectively. From measurements of the P-D (E1) and S-D (E2) transition wavelength in a mixture of43Ca+ and40Ca+ we determined the isotope shifts of these lines.
Direct detection of the elusive 229thorium isomer: Milestone towards a nuclear clock
2017
Recently, the first direct detection of the long-searched low-lying isomeric first excited state of 229Th could be realized via its internal conversion decay branch, which confirms the isomer's existence and lays the foundation for precise studies of its decay parameters, in particular its half-life and excitation energy. Follow-up studies confirmed the theoretically expected lifetime reduction by about 109 of neutral 229mTh compared to charged isomers with τ∼10 μS thus emphasizing the need to efficiently suppress internal conversion when aiming for the detection of a potential photonic decay branch of 229mTh. Work towards precisely determining the excitation energy of the thorium isomer is…
New insights into triaxiality and shape coexistence from odd-mass Rh109
2018
Rapid shape evolutions near A = 100 are now the focus of much attention in nuclear science. Much of the recent work has been centered on isotopes with Z <= 40, where the shapes are observed to transition between near-spherical to highly deformed with only a single pair of neutrons added. At higher Z, the shape transitions become more gradual as triaxiality sets in, yet the coexistence of varying shapes continues to play an important role in the low-energy nuclear structure, particularly in the odd-Z isotopes. This work aims to characterize competing shapes in the triaxial region between Zr and Sn isotopes using ultrafast timing techniques to measure lifetimes of excited states in the neutro…
Ground- and excited stateg-factors of Ba+
1991
We observed the Zeeman-splitting of the 6S 1/2-6P 1/2 resonance transition of Ba+ ions (493.4 nm) in a 6 T magnetic field. The ions were stored in a Penning quadrupole trap. From the splitting and the simultaneously measured cyclotron frequency of stored electrons we derived theg-factors of the 6S 1/2 and 6P 1/2 states. The results areg(6S 1/2)=2.00267(20) andg(6P 1/2)=0.66634(22).
Hyperfine structure measurements in the
1997
Clouds of stable and unstable Eu+ isotopes have been confined in a Paul trap, each containing about 105 particles. In a microwave-optical double resonance experiment several hyperfine separations in the 4f7 6s 7S3 exited level have been measured with the experimental uncertainties ranging between 10-8 and 3×10-6. These experiments have confirmed that also in the case of an excited level with a large number of hyperfine or Zeeman sublevels the microwave-optical double resonance technique in a Paul trap can be useful for precise hyperfine structure investigation. The hyperfine coupling constants A and B have been determined for the isotopes 153Eu+, 151Eu+, 150Eu+ and 148Eu+. The results compl…
Purely long-range polar molecules composed of identical lanthanide atoms
2019
International audience; Doubly polar molecules, possessing an electric dipole moment and a magnetic dipole moment, can strongly couple to both an external electric field and a magnetic field, providing unique opportunities to exert full control of the system quantum state at ultracold temperatures. We propose a method for creating a purely long-range doubly polar homonuclear molecule from a pair of strongly magnetic lanthanide atoms, one atom being in its ground level and the other in a superposition of quasi-degenerate opposite-parity excited levels [Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 063201 (2018)]. The electric dipole moment is induced by coupling the excited levels with an external electric field. W…
Broadening and intensity redistribution in theNa(3p)hyperfine excitation spectra due to optical pumping in the weak excitation limit
2008
Detailed analysis of spectral line broadening and variations in relative intensities of hyperfine spectral components due to optical pumping is presented. Hyperfine levels of sodium 3p1/2 and 3p3/2 levels are selectively excited in a supersonic beam at various laser intensities under the conditions when optical pumping time is shorter than transit time of atoms through the laser beam. The excitation spectra exhibit significant line broadening at laser intensities well below the saturation intensity, and redistribution of intensities of hyperfine spectral components is observed, which in some cases is contradicting with intuitive expectations. Theoretical analysis of the dynamics of optical …
