Quasi-elastic reactions: an interplay of reaction dynamics and nuclear structure

2011

Multinucleon transfer reactions have been investigated in 40Ar+208Pb with the Prisma+Clara set-up. The experimental differential cross sections of different neutron transfer channels have been obtained at three different angular settings taking into account the transmission through the spectrometer. The experimental yields of the excited states have been determined via particle-γ coincidences. In odd Ar isotopes, we reported a signif cant population of 11/2− states, reached via neutron transfer. Their structure matches a stretched conf guration of the valence neutron coupled to vibration quanta.

First Observation of the Unbound NucleusNe15

2014

We report on the first observation of the unbound proton-rich nucleus Ne-15. Its ground state and first excited state were populated in two-neutron knockout reactions from a beam of 500 MeV/u Ne-17. The Ne-15 ground state is found to be unbound by 2.522(66) MeV. The decay proceeds directly to O-13 with simultaneous two-proton emission. No evidence for sequential decay via the energetically allowed 2(-) and 1(-) states in F-14 is observed. The Ne-15 ground state is shown to have a strong configuration with two protons in the (sd) shell around O-13 with a 63(5)% (1s(1/2))(2) component.

Communication: The performance of non-iterative coupled cluster quadruples models

2015

We compare the numerical performance of various non-iterative coupled cluster (CC) quadruples models. The results collectively show how approaches that attempt to correct the CC singles and doubles energy for the combined effect of triple and quadruple excitations all fail at recovering the correlation energy of the full CC singles, doubles, triples, and quadruples (CCSDTQ) model to within sufficient accuracy. Such a level of accuracy is only achieved by models that make corrections to the full CC singles, doubles, and triples (CCSDT) energy for the isolated effect of quadruple excitations of which the CCSDT(Q–3) and CCSDT(Q–4) models of the Lagrangian-based CCSDT(Q–n) perturbation series a…

Subharmonic excitation of the eigenmodes of charged particles in a Penning trap

2004

When parametrically excited, a harmonic system reveals a nonlinear dynamical behaviour which is common to non-deterministic phenomena. The ion motion in a Penning trap -- which can be regarded as a system of harmonic oscillators -- offers the possibility to study anharmonic characteristics when perturbed by an external periodical driving force. In our experiment we excited an electron cloud stored in a Penning trap by applying an additional quadrupole r.f. field to the endcaps. We observed phenomena such as individual and center-of-mass oscillations of an electron cloud and fractional frequencies, so-called subharmonics, to the axial oscillation. The latter show a characteristic threshold b…

Measurements and calculations of Stark broadening parameters for the N I multiplet (1D)3s2D–(1D)3p2Do

2014

Calculations of line broadening parameters of a doubly excited N I transition, based on atomic structure data (taken from the literature), are reported. The obtained results were used for a critical analysis of formerly published experimental data, based on spectra measured in our laboratory. These measured spectra were then again analyzed and new broadening parameters were determined and compared with results of calculations.

Preparation of coherent superposition in a three-state system by adiabatic passage

2004

We examine the topology of eigenenergy surfaces associated to a three-state system driven by two quasi-resonant fields. We deduce mechanisms that allow us to generate various coherent superposition of two states using an additional field, far off resonances. We report the numerical validations in mercury atoms as a model system, creating the coherent superpositions of two excited states and of two states coupled by a Raman process.

Symmetries in mirror nuclei $^{31}$S and $^{31}$P

2018

Excited states in mirror nuclei 31S and 31P were populated in the 1n and 1p exit channels, respectively, of the reaction 20Ne + 12C. The beam of 20Ne, with an energy of 33 MeV, was delivered for the first time by the Piave-Alpi accelerator of the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. Angular correlations of coincident pairs and Doppler-shift attenuation lifetime measurements in 31S and 31P were performed using the multidetector array GASP in conjunction with the EUCLIDES charged particle detector. A comparison of the determined B(E1) strengths of the analog mirror 7/2- → 5/2+ transitions indicates the presence of a violation of isospin symmetry.

Cluster rotational bands in 11B

2016

Differential cross-sections of 11B+α inelastic scattering at E(α) = 65 MeV leading to most of the known 11B states at excitation energies up to 14 MeV were measured [1]. The data analysis was done using Modified diffraction model (MDM) [2] allowing determining radii of excited states. Radii of the states with excitation energies less than ∼ 7 MeV coincide with the radius of the ground state with an accuracy not less than 0.1 - 0.15 fm. This result is consistent with traditional view on shell structure of low-lying states in 11B. Most of the observed high-energy excited states are distributed among four rotational bands. Moments of inertia of band states are close to the moment of inertia of…

Excited states in the proton-unbound nuclide Ta-158

2016

Excited states in the neutron-deficient odd-odd proton-unbound nuclide $^{158}\mathrm{Ta}$ have been investigated in two separate experiments. In the first experiment, $^{166}\mathrm{Ir}$ nuclei were produced in the reactions of 380 MeV $^{78}\mathrm{Kr}$ ions with an isotopically enriched $^{92}\mathrm{Mo}$ target. The $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-decay chain of the ${9}^{+}$ state in $^{166}\mathrm{Ir}$ was analyzed. Fine structure in the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ decay of the ${9}^{+}$ state in $^{162}\mathrm{Re}$ established a 66 keV difference in excitation energy between the lowest-lying ${9}^{+}$ and ${10}^{+}$ states in $^{158}\mathrm{Ta}$. Higher-lying states in $^{158}\mathrm{Ta}$ were popul…
