Search for composite and exotic fermions at LEP 2

A search for unstable heavy fermions with the DELPHI detector at LEP is reported. Sequential and non-canonical leptons, as well as excited leptons and quarks, are considered. The data analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 48~pb$^{-1}$ at an $e^+e^-$ centre-of-mass energy of 183~GeV and about 20~pb$^{-1}$ equally shared between the centre-of-mass energies of 172~GeV and 161~GeV. The search for pair-produced new leptons establishes 95\% confidence level mass limits in the region between 70~GeV/$c^2$ and 90~GeV/$c^2$, depending on the channel. Search for new particles in the two-jet decay channel with the DØ detector

We present the results of a search for the production of new particles decaying into two jets in pp collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV, using the DØ 1992-1995 data set corresponding to 109 pb-1. We exclude at the 95% confidence level the production of excited quarks (q*) with masses below 775 GeV/c2, the most restrictive limit to date. We also exclude standard-model-like W′ (Z′) bosons with masses between 300 and 800 GeV/c2 (400 and 640 GeV/c2). A. W√ boson with mass <786 GeV/c2 has been excluded by previous measurements, and our lower limit is therefore the most stringent to date. © 2004 The American Physical Society.
Charged charmonium molecules

We make use of a self-consistent quark-model based study of four-quark charmonium-like states to interpret recent charmonium experimental data. We conclude that there exists a ${D}^{*}{\overline{D}}^{*}$ meson-meson molecule with quantum numbers $({I}^{G}){J}^{PC}=({1}^{\ensuremath{-}}){2}^{++}$. Our study confirms the presence of charged charmonium-like resonances on the excited charmonium spectrum. We find support from recent experimental data by the Belle Collaboration [R. Mizuk et al. (Belle Collaboration), Phys. Rev. D 78, 072004 (2008)]. Empirical transverse charge densities in the nucleon-to-P11(1440) transition

Abstract Using recent experimental data, we analyze the electromagnetic transition from the nucleon to the P 11 ( 1440 ) resonance. From the resulting empirical transition form factors, we map out the quark transverse charge densities which induce the N → P 11 ( 1440 ) transition. It is found that the transition from the proton to its first radially excited state is dominated by up quarks in a central region of around 0.5 fm and by down quarks in an outer band which extends up to about 1 fm.
Is the spectrum of highly excited mesons purely coulombian?

We show that a static central potential may provide a precise description of highly excited light unflavoured mesons. Due to string breaking this potential becomes of chromoelectric type at sufficiently large quark-antiquark distances giving rise to a coulombian spectrum. The same conclusion can be inferred for any other meson sector through a straightforward extension of our analysis.
The Role of Site-Specific Hydrogen Bonding Interactions in the Solvation Dynamics of N-Acetyltryptophanamide

Measurements of the ultrafast broadband UV fluorescence of N-acetyltryptophanamide (NATA) provide detailed information on its relaxation patterns in three different solvents: methanol (MeOH), water and acetonitrile (ACN). Several processes leading to excited state solvation and cooling are found to occur on different characteristic time scales and are thoroughly analyzed. Comparison between protic MeOH and aprotic ACN allows one to single out a 12 Ps component in the former, which is attributed to the rearrangement of H-bonds existing between the protic solvent and excited NATA. UV-light induced luminescence processes in Al2O3 bulk and nanosize powders

Abstract UV-light induced photoluminescence (PL) and thermoluminescence (TL) have been studied in the alumina (Al2O3) bulk and nanosize powders. It has been found that luminescence properties of the studied alumina powders are determined mainly by presence of the uncontrolled impurities of titanium, iron and chromium. Despite the general similarity of PL characterized by two main emission band around 400 and 750 nm a number of differences has been observed in relative yield and position of the emission bands as well as in the excitation spectrum of the short wavelength band. Lifetime of the metastable 6P 3/2 level of PbII

Pb+-ions were stored in a r.f.-quadrupole trap. Short laser pulses at a 710-nm M1-transition excited the ions to the metastable 6P 3/2 level. Time-resolved registration of the subsequent decay photons at the same wavelength directly gives the lifetime of that state. No dependence of the decay rate on the density of different buffer gases up to 10−5 mbar pressure was observed and from this we deduced upper limits to the quenching cross section. We have observed, however, a small dependence on the stored ion number. The final result for the lifetime is 41.2 ± 0.7 ms in agreement with the result of a previous calculation.
Interacting With Human Simulations: A Prototype Application

The process of interacting and executing agent-based simulations of human phenomena is complex and difficult to follow for lay people. This is due to 1) limited access to computing power, 2) difficulty in writing analytics scripts and 3) the size and complexity of the simulation space. Consequently, agent-based simulations are normally used once to answer a limited set of questions instead of exploring all the potential paths that the model offers. Here, we describe an approach for developing user experiences that automate the analytic process and rely on interactive visualizations and life histories of societies and agents.
