A Microscopic Interpretation of Pump–Probe Vibrational Spectroscopy Using Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics

What happens when extra vibrational energy is added to water? Using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, also including the full electronic structure, and novel descriptors, based on projected vibrational density of states, we are able to follow the flow of excess vibrational energy from the excited stretching and bending modes. We find that the energy relaxation, mostly mediated by a stretching-stretching coupling in the first solvation shell, is highly heterogeneous and strongly depends on the local environment, where a strong hydrogen bond network can transport energy with a time scale of 200 fs, whereas a weaker network can slow down the transport by a factor 2-3.
Spin-orbit, radial, and angular coupling effects in the NaRb excited states

Spin-orbit, radial, and angular nonadiabatic matrix elements between the lowest excited states of NaRb are evaluated by quasi-relativistic ab initio methods, and the results accompanied by potential curves, permanent and transition moments are compared with experimental data and preceding calculations.
Probing the nature of particle–core couplings in 49Ca with γ spectroscopy and heavy-ion transfer reactions

Neutron rich nuclei around 48Ca have been measured with the CLARA–PRISMA setup, making use of 48Ca on 64Ni binary reactions, at 5.9 MeV/A. Angular distributions of γ rays give evidence, in several transfer channels, for a large spin alignment (≈70%) perpendicular to the reaction plane, making it possible to firmly establish spin and parities of the excited states. In the case of 49Ca, states arising from different types of particle–core couplings are, for the first time, unambiguously identified on basis of angular distribution, polarization and lifetime measurements. This chapter examines the way surveillance is discussed in the leading Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat after the revelations made by former NSA-contractor Edward Snowden. In 2013, Snowden provided journalists with documents that revealed the unexpected extent of surveillance conducted by security agencies such as the NSA. Drawing on Critical Discourse Studies and a Foucauldian view of discourse, this article understands media discussions following the Snowden revelations as discursive struggles where the legitimacy and future of surveillance are being constructed and debated. Ninety-two clinic-referred and nonclinical mother-child dyads in Spain and the USA were observed in their home settings under naturalistic conditions for a total of 477 hours. Children in the clinic-referred dyads were considered troubled because of conduct problems. The observations were aimed at assessing two forms of mother-child asynchrony, either of which was expected to differentiate clinic referred from nonclinical dyads. Authoritarian asynchrony was defined as a mother's indiscriminate use of aversive reactions to her child, whereas the permissive form entailed indiscriminate positive reactions.
