All-optical nonlinear processing of both polarization state and intensity profile for 40 Gbit/s regeneration applications

International audience; In this paper, we report all-optical regeneration of the state of polarization of a 40-Gbit/s return-to-zero telecommunication signal as well as its temporal intensity profile and average power thanks to an easy-to-implement, all-fibered device. In particular, we experimentally demonstrate that it is possible to obtain simultaneously polarization stabilization and intensity profile regeneration of a degraded light beam thanks to the combined effects of counterpropagating four-wave mixing, self-phase modulation and normal chromatic dispersion taking place in a single segment of optical fiber. Theoretical study of cascade laser in erbium-doped chalcogenide glass fibers

International audience; A theoretical investigation of an innovative cascade laser source is performed. The main goal of the work is the design of a continuous-wave (CW) photonic crystal fiber (PCF) laser, based on an erbium-doped chalcogenide glass. Due to the comparable lifetimes of the 4I13/2, 4I11/2 and 4I9/2 erbium energy levels, the simultaneous emissions at the wavelengths close to 2.7 μm and 4.5 μm are obtained with a pump wavelength close to 806 nm (direct pumping into the level 4I9/2). Time-domain fiber laser hydrogen sensor.

We report a novel scheme for a fiber-optic hydrogen sensor based on an erbium-doped fiber laser with a palladium-coated tapered fiber within the laser cavity. The tapered fiber acts as a hydrogen-sensing element. When the sensing element is exposed to a hydrogen atmosphere, its attenuation decreases, changing the cavity losses and leading to a modification of the laser transient. The hydrogen concentration is obtained by simple measurement of the buildup time of the laser. This technique translates the measurement of hydrogen concentration into the time domain, and it can be extended to many intensity-based fiber sensors. Tunable Four-wave Mixing Light Source Based on Photonic Crystal Fibers with Variable Chromatic Dispersion

We present a detailed experimental study of fourwave mixing tuning in photonic crystal fibers that were filled either with ethanol or with heavy water. It is demonstrated that wide tuning ranges can be achieved in both cases through the variable chromatic dispersion generated by thermo-optic effect. Tunability of the signal band from 745 nm to 919 nm, and of the idler band from 1260 nm to 1759 nm is demonstrated with a pump at 1064 nm. Conical Fiber Probe for Mechanical Stabilization of Microbubbles in Liquids

We demonstrate that a cone pierced in a fiber tip can stabilize microbubles photothermally generated in liquids. Bubbles can stand and monitor pressure shocks over 3.3 bar with a sensitivity below 7 mbar.

X-ray micro-tomography based FEM modelling of hygroexpansion in PLA composites reinforced with birch pulp fibres

2017

This article presents a microscale modelling approach coupled with X-ray computed micro-tomography for the evaluation of material properties of polylactic acid (PLA) reinforced by birch pulp fibers under the effect of moisture. The results in terms of elastic moduli and hygroexpansion deformation were found in good agreement with the measurements taken at different levels of water uptake.

Near infrared radio-luminescence of O2 loaded radiation hardened silica optical fibers: A candidate dosimeter for harsh environments

We report on an experimental investigation of the infrared Radio-Luminescence (iRL) emission of interstitial O2 molecules loaded in radiation hardened pure-silica-core and fluorine-doped silica-based optical fibers (OFs). The O2 loading treatment successfully dissolved high concentrations of oxygen molecules into the silica matrix. A sharp luminescence at 1272 nm was detected when 2.5 cm of the treated OFs were irradiated with 10 keV X-rays. This emission originates from the radiative decay of the first excited singlet state of the embedded O2 molecules. Theory of parabolic pulse propagation in nonlinear dispersion decreasing optical fiber amplifiers

We obtain an analytical dispersion profile that permits one to reduce pulse propagation in a varying dispersion fiber to the case of an equivalent fiber with constant parameters.
