2017

This dissertation deals with the iconography of the Zodiac between Antiquity and Middle Age, in particular in churches between the XIth and the XIIIth century. The heart of the dissertation is the analysis of a corpus of 260 items. These items concern the figuration of the signs of the Zodiac and the Labors of the months, whether or not combinated, within ecclesial ornamentation between the XIth and the XIIIth century. This period corresponds to the “renaissance” and to the growth of the figuration of the Zodiac in this context. The study is divided into three parts. The first section deals with historiography and with the presentation of the corpus. Then, the origins, re-appropriations and…

Pompei all'opera: iconografie romane nella Jone di Errico Petrella

2019

Within the studies dedicated to the history of the classical tradition, n…

2015

This study revisiting finds with figural decoration from early excavations of the residential area of the town of Himera has sparked a new approach to reconstructing the figural repertoire, mythographic heritage and spectrum of ritual and sacred practices wihch must have characterised this colonial city before its destruction at the end of the 5th century B.C. The author has studied, in particular, various clay arulae and the figural decoration on vases painted by the Himera Painter, which were used in the ritual life of the domestic quarters of the town and whose subject matter appears to be derived exclusively from the sagas of Thessaly and Boeotia. The main theme of the illustrated myths…

2020

The fascinating nature of the Amalfi coast is the background for territories full of history and places of immense value. Starting from some of the main representations of the Salerno territory, it was possible to retrace the main evolutionary phases of the city and then focus on what is a ‘product’ of the events that have taken place over time, the Cetara Tower. The research and iconographic documentation, in fact, have made possible to highlight some of the transformations and superfetations that the tower, in the homonymous city, has undergone during the years; up to assume the current conformation

Remembrance of the Years 1912 and 2012: The Artistic Fruit of two Skarga Anniversaries (visual arts)

2013

The text deals with the fragmentary issue of Piotr Skarga’s iconography which is the artistic legacy of the anniversaries celebrated in 1912 and 2012. The remembrance of this Jesuit’s death one hundred years ago stirred up many emotions. It was visible in, for instance, mass manifestations, books, theatre performances or the creations of fine arts. In the reality of the beginnings of the 20th century, what was important was the impact of the image created by Jan Matejko as well as its ideological, virtually mystical, background. This jubilee, celebrated one hundred years ago, has left numerous traces in the arts, some of which have not been retained to this day. The medal by Witold Bielińsk…

2019

My doctoral work in the history of medieval art unfolds from a multistep process. Based on the initial finding pertaining to the pervasive use of an iconography of Virtues in the Middle Ages, something specific emerged: its presence in sites of government, as well as its common association with the powerful, be it in the civic or religious spheres. The powerful encompasses here individuals representing various types of government existing during the medieval era in the western world. These are kings, princes, members of royal families, religious and lay dignitaries, as well as tyrants and, on the other end of the spectrum, representatives of local governments. All these characters are surro…

2017

This dissertation deals with the meaning of the peacock and the phoenix within contexts of worship and funerary contexts in the Mediterranean area, between the IVth and the XIIth centuries. The study is based on an iconographic documentation meeting 490 items of the peacock and 68 items of the phoenix. These birds were imaged in various ways as well as coins, paintings of catacombs, sarcophagi, mosaics (pavements, domes, apses, …), manuscripts, and even chancel screens. The analysis of the documentation indicates that links were weaved between both birds associated with the idea of revival long before the IVth century. The idea of revival, indeed, is a cross-cutting concept in the study of …

PREFAZIONE

2009
