2019

The essay summarizes a field research work started in 1998 in Calamonaci (AG). Through the discovery of the diversity and alterity of the endotic, between the known and the familiar, continuously discovered and enriched, the author develops a careful analysis of family images that become the premise and purpose of the research. This field research involved about 300 families and then became a photographic exhibition, with a catalog, experienced, shared and participated by the community. In this work, the author has adopted a participatory research method trying to understand how the photographic image, almost always thought of as the referent of the reality represented, with each new vision…

Multimedia reading of the twelve months in a capital…

2018

The paper concerns a quadruple monolithic capital, supported by four grouped columns, located in the sout…

Antonio Pisano y Enrique Giner: dos visiones medallísticas sobre Alfonso V El Magnánimo.

2010

The ultimate message : a study of medieval tombstones in ducal Burgundy : 12th-16th centuries

2011

The tombstone has long been neglected by historians. As obituaries and wills, tombstones reveal as much the relationship of the deceased to death that the management of their memory by their heirs. This study first shows the wealth of medieval Burgundy graves goods. Typological diversity adds to the richness of iconography with large amounts of effigial monuments. Tombs materialize burial of prestige. Originally reserved for prelates and princes, burial ad ecclesiam progressively extended to the feudal aristocracy and the bourgeoisie. The location and the materialization of a burial monument also reflect the evolution of medieval piety. Epigraphy and iconography show the mutation of "gothic…

Sófocles, Traquinias 526

2016

In the first stasimon of Trachiniae, l. 526 there is an issue related to textual criticism which has not been solved yet. It is hard to understand the…

2020

In the medieval cemetery of the Historic Site of San Juan del Hospital of Valencia is housed a small funeral chapel founded in the late thirteenth century by the knight Arnau de Romaní. Along its cornice there are a series of heads of animals and humans that are one of the few sculptural vestiges inserted into the Romanesque iconographic tradition that are preserved in the city. So far they have not aroused the interest of specialists and no one has dedicated a detailed study to these curious and interesting images located in the marginal spaces of such a beautiful building. This article aims to complete this gap addressing the study of the corbels of the small temple, projecting a thematic…

‘Old Frisian krocha: Setting Fire with a Coal Pan’

2017

TheBrokmerbrefand the Emsigo Compensation Tariff concerning arson provide a number of occurrences of the wordkrocha, otherwise unrecorded in Old Frisian, in the meaning ‘coal pan’. Yet the Modern Frisian dialect words denote different sorts of cooking pots, either earthen or metal, and apparently do not support the specialized meaning of the Old Frisian. Coal pans were quite common in medieval times, however, and the legal provisions under examination provide both homely and lively descriptions of arson, possibly based on actual cases. Medieval iconography of the devil as an arsonist—portrayed with a coal pan in his hand—assists the interpretation ofkrocha, which goes back to Richthofen, an…
