Numerical simulation of unsteady MHD flows and applications

2009

International audience; We present a robust numerical method for solving the compressible Ideal Magneto-Hydrodynamic equations. It is based on the Residual Distribution (RD) algorithms already successfully tested in many problems. We adapted the scheme to the multi-dimensional unsteady MHD model. The constraint ∇ · B = 0 is enforced by the use a Generalized Lagrange Multiplier (GLM) technique. First, we present this complete system and the keys to get its eigensystem, as we may need it in the algorithm. Next, we introduce the numerical scheme built in order to get a compressible, unsteady and implicit solver which has good shock-capturing properties and is second-order accurate at the conve…

The Optimal Aspect Ratio for Plasmonic Bio-Sensing

2012

The sensitivity of plasmonic particles to the immediate dielectric environment allows to monitor the dielectric constant of liquids and binding events of molecules to the gold particle surface. Here, by means of simulations and experiments, I investigate which aspect ratio (AR) of gold nanorods is ideal for plasmonic sensing by employing various measures for “ideal” behavior.

Competitiveness and sustainability in horticulture: strategy for small businesses

2018

Vegetable cultivation has a significant history in the countries of the Mediterranean basin. Italy is an important horticultural producer and, in this context, Sicily offers ideal conditions for the protected cultivation of field vegetables. Apart from a few well-organised producers, in many areas horticulture is characterised by backward entrepreneurial systems and fragmented production lines that make the vegetable market one that is very close to being a rigged competition in which companies must accept the price and have no negotiating power. This situation has been aggravated even further by the recent economic crisis and the subsequent recession, resulting in the disappearance of the …

Effects of post-filtering in grid-synchronization algorithms under grid faults

2018

Abstract The spread of distributed generation systems has reinforced concerns and requirements on grid-tied power converters. The synchronization with the utility voltage vector is a major concern. In the literature, algorithms based on Phase Locked Loops are extensively presented. In spite of adequate performances under ideal and balanced grid conditions, under grid faults great inaccuracies arise. Shortcomings are overcome by advanced algorithms at the expenses of the complexity and computational cost. In this paper, grid synchronization algorithms are addressed. A solution is proposed by introducing a new post-filter stage in a Decoupled Double Synchronous Reference Frame not affecting, …

Nonazeotropy in the System Methyl Ethanoate + 1,2-Epoxybutane

1997

New vapor−liquid equilibrium data for the binary system methyl ethanoate + 1,2-epoxybutane are reported at 35 and 101.3 kPa and at 298.15 K. It is shown that no azeotropes are present in the system, in disagreement with data reported by others who claim that two azeotropes are present at 298.15 K. We claim that previously reported data are in error because of impurities in the reagents and experimental errors. According to our results, the system methyl ethanoate + 1,2-epoxybutane behaves like a regular solution and its vapor phase can be considered practically ideal so that it cannot fulfill the necessary conditions for multiple azeotropy. The data were satisfactorily correlated using the …

Bòvedas tabicadas: experimental and numerical analysis

2008

A class of thin vaults, the so-called “bovedas tabicadas”, which represent one of the most common Spanish traditional building techniques at the end of XIX century are studied here, treating the relevant analysis problem through a numerical, as well as an experimental, approach. At first the problem is studied by searching for the behaviour of the material effecting suitable experiments. Once the constitutive behaviour of the materials and the structural elements are experimentally characterized, a semi inverse method for the identification of the optimum mechanical parameters to assign to an equivalent homogeneous ideal material through analysis reproducing the executed experimental tests …

The Concept of Love in Masculinist Blogs : A Strategic Ideal

2018

Love is often considered a positive emotion and an ethical relationship between people. The representations of love in contemporary culture usually emphasise its beneficial, even empowering effects. However, the fluidity of the concept also enables other kinds of representations of love to flourish. For example, the advocates of traditional gender order — masculinists or male rights activists (MRAs)-— use idealistic images of heterosexual love, often intertwined with the idealised heterosexual nuclear family, to promote repressive ideologies such as misogyny and antifeminism. This is increasingly done with the help of internet sites. In this chapter I wish to show that the fluidity of the c…

The nearly Gorenstein property for numerical duplications and semitrivial extensions

2022

In this thesis we present and study the ideal duplication, a new construction within the class of the relative ideals of a numerical semigroup $S$, that, under specific assumptions, produces a relative ideal of the numerical duplication $SJoin^b E$, for some ideal $E$ of $S$. We prove that every relative ideal of the numerical duplication can be uniquely written as the ideal duplication of two relative ideals of $S$; this allows us to better understand how the basic operations of the class of the relative ideals of $SJoin^b E$ work. In particular, we characterize the ideals $E$ such that $SJoin^b E$ is nearly Gorenstein. With the aim to generalize this construction to commutative rings with…
