ideal: an R/Bioconductor package for interactive differential expression analysis

2020

AbstractBackgroundRNA sequencing (RNA-seq) is an ever increasingly popular tool for transcriptome profiling. A key point to make the best use of the available data is to provide software tools that are easy to use but still provide flexibility and transparency in the adopted methods. Despite the availability of many packages focused on detecting differential expression, a method to streamline this type of bioinformatics analysis in a comprehensive, accessible, and reproducible way is lacking.ResultsWe developed the ideal software package, which serves as a web application for interactive and reproducible RNA-seq analysis, while producing a wealth of visualizations to facilitate data interpr…

Alla periferia del mondo, ai margini dell’umano. Felicità e dolore in Diodoro

2020

In the proem of his Bibliotheke, Diodorus Siculus states that a historian should provide knowledge for all mankind. Hence, the value of a historian is not measured by his ability to gather in a single narrative stories of men from all times all over the world. What matters is the way in which the common human nature of all of the actors in history emerges. This contribution focuses on the first part of Book III, in particular on the Ichthyophagoi and Acridophagoi, where the historian’s gaze oscillates between idealisation and compassion towards such primitive peoples. The diodorean ethnographic report has the merit to provide a backdrop to some of the guidelines of the cultural debate in th…

Ethics of Vulnerability

2016

The chapter begins by showing the facticity of vulnerability in different situations of life. Then, it asserts, as do authors such as Williams, Nagel, MacIntyre or Nussbaum, that western ethics has relegated the vulnerable nature of individuals and has brought to the fore the ideal of self-sufficiency, autonomy, will of power or of agency, when sketching models of good life. But, going beyond that, the question asked, in a third stage, is how to establish a foundation for the moral obligation of protecting vulnerable beings as a requirement of justice, and the chapter presents three relevant answers. Firstly, an ethics of care in the tradition of Hyginus, Heidegger, Boff and the Ethics of E…

Codimension growth of two-dimensional non-associative algebras

2007

Let F be a field of characteristic zero and let A be a two-dimensional non-associative algebra over F. We prove that the sequence c n (A), n =1,2,..., of codimensions of A is either bounded by n + 1 or grows exponentially as 2 n . We also construct a family of two-dimensional algebras indexed by rational numbers with distinct T-ideals of polynomial identities and whose codimension sequence is n + 1, n > 2.

Introduction to generalized topological spaces

2011

[EN] We introduce the notion of generalized topological space (gt-space). Generalized topology of gt-space has the structure of frame and is closed under arbitrary unions and finite intersections modulo small subsets. The family of small subsets of a gt-space forms an ideal that is compatible with the generalized topology. To support the definition of gt-space we prove the frame embedding modulo compatible ideal theorem. Weprovide some examples of gt-spaces and study key topological notions (continuity, separation axioms, cardinal invariants) in terms of generalized spaces.

Factorization of homomorphisms through H∞(D)

2003

AbstractWeakly compact homomorphisms between (URM) algebras with connected maximal ideal space are shown to factor through H∞(D) by means of composition operators and to be strongly nuclear. The spectrum of such homomorphisms is also described. Strongly nuclear composition operators between algebras of bounded analytic functions are characterized. The path connected components of the space of endomorphisms on H∞(D) in the uniform operator topology are determined.

Irreducible components of Hurwitz spaces parameterizing Galois coverings of curves of positive genus

2014

Let Y be a smooth, projective, irreducible complex curve. A G-covering p : C → Y is a Galois covering, where C is a smooth, projective, irreducible curve and an isomorphism G ∼ −→ Aut(C/Y ) is fixed. Two G-coverings are equivalent if there is a G-equivariant isomorphism between them. We are concerned with the Hurwitz spaces H n (Y ) and H G n (Y, y0). The first one parameterizes Gequivalence classes of G-coverings of Y branched in n points. The second one, given a point y0 ∈ Y , parameterizes G-equivalence classes of pairs [p : C → Y, z0], where p : C → Y is a G-covering unramified at y0 and z0 ∈ p (y0). When G = Sd one can equivalently consider coverings f : X → Y of degree d with full mon…

L -valued bornologies on powersets

2016

In M. Abel and A. ostak (2011) [1], the concept of an L-fuzzy bornology was introduced. Actually, an L-fuzzy bornology on a set X is a certain ideal in the family LX of L-fuzzy subsets of a set X. Here we propose an alternative approach to fuzzification of the concept of bornology. We define an L-valued bornology on a set X as an L-fuzzy subset B of the powerset 2X satisfying L-valued analogues of the axioms of a bornology. Basic properties of L-valued bornological spaces are studied. Our special interest concerns L-valued bornologies induced by fuzzy metrics and relative compactness-type L-valued bornologies in ChangGoguen L-topological spaces.
