Educational Publishers and Educational Publishing

2018

This chapter focuses on the institutional originators of educational materials for primary and secondary education. On the basis of publications from recent decades up to the present, it gives an overview of insights about textbook publishers (as they can be called for short) from different disciplines, from subject field didactics to media linguistics. These insights are categorised in accordance with aspects like organisations, processes, state interventions, and new models for the provision of materials. Moreover, the chapter presents critical positions towards schoolbook publishers with respect to their alleged undue promotion of hegemonic views. Finally, and originally, it takes a rath…

<p>Preoperative Anemia and Iron Deficiency Screening, Evaluation and Management: Barrier Identification and Implementation Strategy Mapping<…

2020

Introduction and aims: Patients undergoing major surgery risk significant blood loss and transfusion, which increases substantially if they have pre-existing anemia. Preoperative Anemia and Iron Deficiency Screening, Evaluation and Management Pathways (PAIDSEM-P) outline recommended blood tests and treatment to optimize patients before surgery. Documented success using PAIDSEM-P to reduce transfusions and improve patient outcomes exists, but the reporting quality of such studies is suboptimal. It remains unclear what implementation strategies best support the implementation of PAIDSEM-P. Method: Maximum variation, purposive sampling was used to recruit a total of 15 partici-pants, including…

Origin and dispersal routes of foreign green and Kemp’s ridley turtles in Spanish Atlantic and Mediterranean water

2014

The presence of the green and Kemp’s ridley turtles is rare at Atlantic and Mediterranean Spanish waters, but the records have increased during the last decades. We reported a new set of records and reviewed all the historical observations of these species. The analysis of a mitochondrial DNA fragment of the newest records provided insights about the origin of the individuals. The Kemp’s ridley turtles arrived from the western Atlantic nesting beaches, although the discovering of a new haplotype suggested the existence of an unknown or low sampled nesting area of origin. Furthermore, the genetic analysis was crucial for the species identification in one specimen, hence recommending the use o…

Molecular and morphological identification of larval opecoelids (Digenea: Opecoelidae) parasitising prosobranch snails in a Western Mediterranean lag…

2012

In a study of the digeneans parasitising molluscs in the Els Alfacs lagoon (Ebro Delta, Western Mediterranean) we found heavy infections with sporocysts emitting two types of cotylocercous cercariae in the prosobranch trochid gastropod Gibbula adansonii and with metacercariae in the prosobranch nassariid gastropod Cyclope neritea. A comparative analysis using ITS ribosomal DNA sequences from these larval stages and published sequences of 17 larval and adult opecoelid stages allowed us to elucidate the life-cycle of Macvicaria obovata and to confirm the identification of Cainocreadium labracis based on cercarial morphology. We provide molecular evidence for the identification and the first d…

Seasonal trend of Anisakidae infestation in South Mediterranean bluefish

2020

A total of 1104 fish samples from markets of Sicily were analysed for the detection and species identification of Anisakidae nematodes. The preliminary analysis of the fish samples showed the presence of 2459 larvae. All the fish species revealed different prevalence of infestation, with a maximum of 100% for Lepidopus caudatus and a minimum of 4.5% in Sardina pilchardus. The 80% of the larvae examined by PCR-RFLP analysis belonged to Anisakis pegreffii species. The seasonal infestation trend of Anisakis was evaluated in all the fish sample examined. The results of the seasonal infestation trend showed a marked connection with the ecological aspects of the fish species examined. As far as w…

Cryptic invasion in Southern Europe: The case of Ferrissia fragilis (Pulmonata: Ancylidae) Mediterranean populations

2011

Four populations of the North American ancylid gastropod Ferrissia fragilis have been found in Southern Italy, thus expanding the known Eurasian distribution range of this invasive gastropod to the Mediterranean area. Both mitochondrial markers used for the molecular identification of the sampled specimens (16S and COI) showed a modest to absent haplotypic diversity in the studied Ferrissia populations from Europe and Asia, and their perfect identity with some of the haplotypes observed in North American F. fragilis populations. In the light of the scarce molecular diversity observed in the whole Palaearctic area and of the growing evidences for the ongoing spreading of the species in Europ…

First record of the tadpole shrimp triops cancriformis (Branchiopoda, Notostraca) in Cyprus

2014

The presence of the large branchiopod Triops cancriformis (Bosc, 1801-1802) in Cyprus is reported for the first time. Triops cancriformis individuals were observed in the large temporary wetland of Paralimni Lake (Famagusta District, Cyprus) during the wet periods of 2013 and 2014. This finding extends the current knowledge of the species distribution in the eastern Mediterranean area, and stresses the ecological and conservation value of the unique habitat of Paralimni Lake. In addition, it highlights the need for carrying on further studies on the fauna of temporary pond habitats in Cyprus, and for better conservation management strategies for such EU priority habitats.

Nothodissotis (Melastomataceae), a new genus from Atlantic Central Africa, including the new species N. alenensis from Equatorial Guinea

2019

Based on morphological and phylogenetic evidence, a new genus of Melastomataceae (Melastomateae), Nothodissotis Veranso-Libalah & G.Kadereit, gen. nov., is described from Atlantic Central Africa. Nothodissotis is distinguished from other African Melastomateae genera by its calyx-lobes that are notched at apex and asymmetrical (vs. entire and symmetrical). Nothodissotis includes two species: the type species N.barteri (Hook.f.) Veranso-Libalah & G.Kadereit, comb. nov. (syn. Dissotisbarteri Hook.f.), and the new species N.alenensis Veranso-Libalah & O. Lachenaud, sp. nov., described and illustrated here. Both species are restricted to open vegetation on rock outcrops w…

Identification and Handling of Critical Irradiance Forecast Errors Using a Random Forest Scheme – A Case Study for Southern Brazil

2015

Abstract Large forecast errors of solar power prediction cause challenges for the management of electric grids. Here, the classification technique Random Forests is applied to analyze the possible linkage of hourly or daily forecast errors to the actual situation given by a set of meteorological variables. This form a prediction of the forecast error and is thus usable to update the forecast. The performance of this scheme is assessed for the example of irradiance forecasts in Brazil. While limited to none improvements are obtained for next-hour forecasts, significant improvements are obtained for the next-day forecasts.
