Identity formation in adulthood
2007
Päivi Fadjukoff seurasi tutkimuksessaan yksilöllisen identiteetin kehitystä varhaisaikuisuudesta keski-ikään, identiteetin kehitystä ennakoivia tekijöitä sekä identiteetin yhteyksiä henkilökohtaiseen hyvinvointiin keski-iässä.- Myönteinen identiteettikehitys jatkuu varhaisaikuisuudesta keski-ikään, vaikkakin yksilöllinen vaihtelu on suurta, Fadjukoff havaitsi. Aikuisuuteen yltävät identiteetin pitkittäistutkimukset ovat kansainvälisesti harvinaisia. Identiteetin jatkuva aktiivinen työstäminen myös aikuisena on kuitenkin tullut yhä tärkeämmäksi yhteiskunnallisen murroksen myötä. - Jälkimodernille yhteiskunnallemme on tyypillistä yksilöllisyyden ja yksilön omien valintojen korostaminen, arvoj…

Emotionally loaded identity and agency in Finnish academic work
2020
This narrative study investigated identity, agency and emotions, amongst an under-researched academic group – those without PhDs with primary responsibility for teaching, who are also expected to do research. In this interview-based paper, we examine the experience of such Finnish academics in a research-intensive university. Thematic and then narrative approaches were employed. The findings demonstrated five narratives which indicated both balanced and tensioned relations as regards academic identity, with variable perceptions of agency and emotions embedded. The study contributes in two ways: first, it adds to the little that is known of the experiences of the aforementioned under-researc…
Russian speakers’ media engagement and acculturation in Finland and Latvia
2022
AbstractThis comparative study looks into Russian speakers’ acculturation in Finland and Latvia by contrasting their cultural involvement and cultural preference Carlson and Güler (J Int Migr Integr 19:625–647, 2018. 10.1007/s12134-018-0554-4) with their self-reported news media use. Drawing on survey data collected from both countries (N = 224), the findings show that participants in both countries scored closer to biculturalism than monoculturalism. Majority of the respondents report predominantly engaging with non-Russian news media sources. However, regardless of the societal context, respondents who were more engaged with Russian news media sources also scored higher on cultural prefer…
Kuka minä olen? Monikulttuuristen opiskelijoiden identiteettipuhetta
2008
Young people with immigrant backgrounds follow different paths to acculturate. Some integrate into the new society so that they cannot be singled out from the majority; others maintain their ethnic culture in addition to adopting values of the larger society. Alternatively, some immigrant youth distance themselves from both their parents' culture and new one. The challenge for second generation immigrants is that they have to make a double transition to adulthood. Immigrant adolescents develop an identity as members of their own group, and to varying degrees, as members of the lager society. Because of the variety of influences and opportunities they face in making choices on these issues, …
