Manoeuvring in Between: Mapping Out the Transnational Identity of Russian-Speaking Latvians in Sweden and Great Britain
2019
AbstractThe proportion of the Russian-speaking population in Latvia increased dramatically during the Soviet period from 12% in 1935 to 42% in 1990 due to organised labour migration within the Soviet Union. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, especially since the end of the 1990s, many Russian-speaking Latvians have migrated to Western countries. Very little is known about the national identities of these Russian-speaking Latvians. By analysing 30 life histories of Russian-speaking migrants from Latvia in Sweden and Great Britain, this study aims to analyse the transnational identities of Russian-speaking Latvians abroad. The analysis shows that the migrants’ own migration patterns in a…
‘Europeanization’ of Family Law: Interaction/Intersection of Cultural and Lexical diversities
2012
The variety of national family laws constitutes a serious obstacle to the free movement of persons within the European Union. From this point of view, the establishment of minimum standards together with the creation of a ‘common core’ of family law rules become one of the main goals of the EU institutions in order to make the principle of Community freedom effective. Since the late 1990s the discourse on the relationship between family law(s) and Community law has changed significantly (1999 Action Plan; The Amsterdam Treaty, art.65; EU Treaty, art.39). Yet, notwithstanding the general sociological/socio-cultural changes that have affected the legal categories of family and marriage (i.e.,…
Alla fiera della memoria. Feste, identità locali e mercato culturale in Sicilia
2013
The representation of marginalized identities through language use : Study of Character Development in Ali Smith s Hotel World
2009
Käsittelen tutkielmassani kielen keinoja marginalisoituneiden identiteettien representaatiossa. Käytän aineistonani fiktiivistä tekstiä, jonka avulla selvitän menetelmiä, joita kirjailijan on mahdollista hyödyntää identiteettien kielellisessä representaatiossa halutunlaisen kuvan aikaansaamiseksi. Olen erityisen kiin-nostunut marginalisoitumisesta yhteiskunnan sisällä ja valtakulttuurin keskusten läheisyydessä. Haluan tutkielmallani kiinnittää huomiota erilaisuuden kulttuuriin sidottuihin esittämistapoihin ja toivon tuovani alan tutkimukseen tuoretta näkökulmaa käsittelemällä sosiaalista marginalisoitumista fiktiivisen represen-taation kautta. Tutkielmani aineistona toimii Ali Smithin roma…
Regimes of patriarchy and faith : reflections on challenges in interviewing women and religious minorities in Pakistan
2023
PurposeThis paper discusses the challenges that two doctoral researchers faced while researching religious minorities and women in a culturally sensitive society such as Pakistan. Their shared interest in sensitive topics related to gender and minorities in Pakistan led both researchers to collaborate in this study to provide a better understanding of issues in qualitative research in the same research context. They discuss the challenges of interviewing participants within the educational context. They also suggest some ways to overcome such challenges.Design/methodology/approachBased on Foucualt's writings on regimes of truth, discourse and systems of exclusion, the authors in this study …
Venäjänkieliset IT-alan asiantuntijat työyhteisöissä - monikieliset käytänteet, identiteetit ja osallisuuden kokemukset integroitumisessa
2013
This article examines working age Russian-speaking migrants, and their paths in looking for a place in the Finnish work and professional communities. The integration process is examined in three focal settings: 1) aspiration settings in which migrants are preparing to participate in work and professional communities; 2) achievement settings in which migrants have successfully entered work and professional communities, and 3) abandonment settings in which migrants have been marginalized from work and professional communities and have given up their aspirations to integrate into these communities. The data consist of 3 thematic interviews and the analysis of the data is focusing on the inform…
An inherited name as the foundation of a person's identity: How the memory of a dead person lived on in the names of his or her descendants
2012
A personal name has always played a central role in the formation of an individual’s identity. In addition to the surname, the forename also defined his or her place within the family community, which for most people was the most important target in the identification process, especially in the early modern period. The identities of the persons in rural families were also to a great extent based on personal names inherited from forebears and the images thus created. In this article, I examine to what extent the naming practices of the population in the hinterland Finnish countryside and the identities created by them were connected with ancestors. The study spans a quite long period, from t…
Acculturation Profiles and Perceived Discrimination: Associations with Psychosocial Well-being Among Tunisian Adolescents in Italy
2015
Research usually analyzed the relationships between acculturation or perceived discrimination and immigrants’ well-being, but few studies used an integrative perspective. Framed from a person-oriented approach, the current paper tried to advance the literature examining how acculturation profiles and perceived (group and personal) discrimination were associated with psychosocial well-being in a sample of 348 Tunisian adolescents (females = 48.28%; mean age = 15.72) living in southern Italy. Cluster analytic methods on the scores of acculturation strategies, ethnic and national identities, ethnic and national languages, ethnic and national peer social contacts produced three acculturation pr…
Using the concept of onomastic literacy as an analytical tool : A methodological examination of the names of European royal families
2022
Onomastic literacy (the skills needed to interpret the cultural and social phenomena and meanings related to name-giving) are part of a person’s cultural capital. I use this concept, which I have developed, to study personal names in family networks and in royal families in particular. This research combines the approaches and methodologies of collective biography, microhistory and the history of mentalities. The concept of onomastic literacy helps us to contextualize the lives of the research objects more closely as part of the cultures and local communities of their times, thereby revealing the deep-rooted motives behind name choices and the slow change in mentalities affecting naming. pe…
Compliance and resistance : An investigation into the construction of gender identities by Pakistani women on Facebook
2020
Facebook has recently gained popularity among young, digitally literate and predominantly urban Pakistanis. Such social networking sites allow users the freedom to express themselves using usernames, visuals and topics of their own choice. In this article, I examine how Pakistani Facebook users mobilize such resources in their identity work. Using Multimodal Discourse Analysis, I investigate how Pakistani women construct their gender identities on Facebook using visual and linguistic resources. The results revealed the significant impact of Facebook on the socio-cultural and linguistic norms of discourse in Pakistan that enables women to challenge established communication models while they…
