virtual communities, social networks and resistant fragments: young sicilian gays’ identity counter-attack

2002

Society is made of communications and representations: the core of its dynamics is culture and its patterns. Human beings are the authors of this significant web, i.e. culture; they are the authors and the victims at the same time. Social exclusions as norms and values — an ice–cream as a porn movie — are embedded in this culture web, as the anthropologist Clifford Geertz would say; and culture is the nature, the most appropriate environment of human interactions. A human being, her feelings, thoughts, dogma, creations, his/her own physical expression become a matter of culture, representations and perceptions. She creates paradise and hell, she is her own angel, her own devil. Sexual moral…

Transitions to Working Life: Securing Professional Competence

2014

This chapter examines the transition from education to work as a critical phase of professional career and the development of professional competence Literature on transition to working life has identified several challenges that many graduates meet in the early stages of their career such as: threat of unemployment, inadequate knowledge and skills, decreased self-efficacy and increased stress, instability of professional identity, newcomers’ role and position in a work community, early attrition and changing occupation. The importance of workplace learning in supporting graduates as they transit to the workplace is influential in assisting graduates deal with these challenges. This chapter…

Le rôle déterminant de la presse dans la vie des expulsés allemands

2016

This article focuses on the identity of the German expellees after World War II through the study of one of their publications, the Grafschafter Bote. For this population who is spread geographically all over Germany, the newspapers published by numerous associations have contributed to the creation and the maintaining of a collective identity able to sustain its position in the new German state. These newspapers still exist today and contribute to the strengthening of a particular identity.

Whole mirror duplication-random loss model and pattern avoiding permutations

2010

International audience; In this paper we study the problem of the whole mirror duplication-random loss model in terms of pattern avoiding permutations. We prove that the class of permutations obtained with this model after a given number p of duplications of the identity is the class of permutations avoiding the alternating permutations of length p2+1. We also compute the number of duplications necessary and sufficient to obtain any permutation of length n. We provide two efficient algorithms to reconstitute a possible scenario of whole mirror duplications from identity to any permutation of length n. One of them uses the well-known binary reflected Gray code (Gray, 1953). Other relative mo…

To Be Continued: The Genidentity of Physical and Biological Processes

2016

The concept of genidentity has been proposed as a way to better understand identity through time, especially in physics and biology. The genidentity view is utterly anti-substantialist in so far as it suggests that the identity of X through time does not presuppose whatsoever the existence of a permanent “core” or “substrate” of X. Yet applications of this concept to real science have been scarce and unsatisfying. In this paper, our aim is to show that a well-defined concept of functional genidentity can be crucial to shed light on identity through time in classical physics and especially in biology. Finally, we show that understanding identity on the basis of continuity suggests a move tow…

The cultural dimension of territorial intelligence, state of the art, case of cultural heritage

2009

International audience; A new field of research and experimentation is the cultural dimension of territorial intelligence, which means the analysis of the cultural conditions of a sustainable development. Theses conditions are at least cultural diversity and social cohesion. Some significant works have been done concerning the link between culture, territory and identity; cultural diversity is very often considered from the point of view of cultural industries, but it must refer firstly to different people living in the same territory. A very important question is how diversity can be taken into account in the field of heritage and cultural wealth. After his very important work about " plac…

The "terroir products", between environment, culture and territorial development

2009

International audience; In the double context of globalization and socio-ecological transition, numerous territories are in search of models of development granting a larger place in social dimension, in environment, in culture, and generally in immaterial resources. They also explore other kinds of governance based on collaboration, participation and global approach. In this regard, the mode of development constructed on the promotion of "terroir products" appears as a particularly promising way; on condition of course that the reference to the" terroir" is not a simple argument of marketing in the service of a product but the support of a true project of territory. The definition given in…

On Cultures and Interactions

2014

International audience; This chapter echoes the need expressed by scholars to develop a new model for examining intercultural interactions, in order to distinguish cross-cultural and intercultural approaches. Arguing that nation-centric studies have difficulty accounting for the complexity of communication processes taking place between foreigners, the author suggests that communication science and a “semiopragmatics” approach to interpersonal interactions can be used to reconceptualise the relationship between cultures, identities and communication, taking into account the mediating role of the contextual factors specific to the encounter itself. The chapter thus aims to lay down the found…
