Fostering learning opportunities through employee participation amid organizational change

2014

Health care organizations are facing rapid changes, frequently involving modification of existing procedures. The case study reported here examined change processes and learning in a health care organization. The organizational change in question occurred in the emergency clinic of a Finnish central hospital where a new action model for shift-specific nursing supervision was being introduced. The aim of this study was to investigate some of the employee participation and learning opportunities amid this organizational change. The data collection was ethnographically informed, and the data consisted of audio-recorded and observed meetings, observations of the new action model, and field inte…

Kaiken keskellä : keskijohto strategisen muutoksen tekijänä ja kokijana

2018

This research focuses on the actions and perceptions of the middle managers during a strategic change. Over the years, strategic change and middle managers have been studied from various points of view. The importance of middle managers and their roles and actions have been argued both for and against. Most of the recent research emphasises the middle managers’ importance in strategic organizational change as mediators between the change initiators and the change recipients. However, there is less research on middle managers’ and subordinates’ sensemaking processes during a strategic organizational change, especially when identity, culture, artefacts, emotions and change resistance are cons…

Organizational Identity and Trust

2006

This paper focuses on organizational identity and trust. The paper is being created from a theoretical point of view. Exploring concept and their interrelation is important and valuable scientific work with the purpose of better understanding their meaning and interrelation. This kind of conceptual and theoretical examination has an important task as a basis for theorizing and theory creation. Both identity and trust are multilevel notions. Both concepts describe an abstract phenomenon that is of growing interest in organization field of study. Despite of the conceptual ambiguity both identity and trust can be argued to be relative and qualitative by nature. In addition, they both are commo…

Hybrid Identities of Development Studies in Tanzania

2023

This article addresses identities, hierarchies of knowledge and power relations in academia in postcolonial settings, in the context of development studies in Tanzania. Based on literatures on organizational identity and postcolonial hybridity, it establishes a conceptual lens of hybrid identity, scrutinizing how the identity of the discipline of development studies is constructed. Based on analysis of interviews with staff in development studies, we identify four relationships where differences and asymmetries were articulated: with other disciplines, with past development studies, with global theorizing on development, and with partners in the global North. We conclude in discussing how a…

An empirical assessment of employer branding as a form of sport event sponsorship

2019

Purpose. The purpose of this paper is to expand and test Backhaus and Tikoo’s (2004) employer branding (EB) conceptual framework from the perspective of internal EB in a sport event sponsorship context. Design/methodology/approach. This study developed a set of hypotheses, which were tested in the context of a business-to-business multinational organization’s sport event sponsorship project. Empirical data were collected from 716 employees of the case company after the sponsorship project was complete. Findings. The results support all the hypotheses and reveal that a sport event sponsorship project can act as a means to achieving EB goals in the investigated context. Research limitations/i…

Conducting Research on Organizational Identity

2006

The concept of organizational identity has its roots in the exploration of identity in an individual level. The concept of organizational identity was introduced by Albert and Whetten in 1985. They suggested that organizational identity embodies the characteristics of an organization, that its members perceive to be central, distinctive, and enduring (or continuing) in an organization when past, present and the future is taken into account. Organizational identity seeks to answer to the question of “who are we as an organization”. Researchers have explored the characteristics of organizational identity. Especially the features “distinctive” and “enduring” as characteristics describing organ…

Employee Sensemaking on the Importance of Sustainability Reporting in Sustainability Identity Change

2018

This study examines employee sensemaking processes in order to understand the role of sustainability reporting in organizational identity change. Through an analysis of 52 interviews with employees in two Finnish companies we develop sensemaking frames for understanding the role of sustainability reporting in organizational identity change. The three sensemaking frames are individualistic, relational and decoupled. Each of these sensemaking frames differs in stakeholder orientation. They indicate that sensemaking influences the interpretation of how important sustainability reporting is for organizational identity change towards sustainability. The study showed how the individualistic and r…

Indivīda identitāte un laika perspektīva

2017

Pētījumā tika izmantotas trīs anketas: Individuālā nākotnes orientācijas skala (The Individual Future Orientation Scale, Kolesovs, 2017); Zimbardo laika perspektīvas aptaujas apakšskala “Negatīva pagātne” (Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory, ZTPI, Zimbardo & Boyd, 1999); Identitātes Stilu Aptauja (Identity Style Inventory, Berzonsky, 1992). Ir iegūtas statistiski nozīmīgas sakarības starp sa…

Biharmonic obstacle problem: guaranteed and computable error bounds for approximate solutions

2020

The paper is concerned with a free boundary problem generated by the biharmonic operator and an obstacle. The main goal is to deduce a fully guaranteed upper bound of the difference between the exact minimizer u and any function (approximation) from the corresponding energy class (which consists of the functions in $H^2$ satisfying the prescribed boundary conditions and the restrictions stipulated by the obstacle). For this purpose we use the duality method of the calculus of variations and general type error identities earlier derived for a wide class of convex variational problems. By this method, we define a combined primal--dual measure of error. It contains four terms of different natu…

I parchi preistorici: esperienze internazionali di “presentazione” del paesaggio come riscoperta delle valenze immateriali

2007

The meaning of “cultural patrimony” includes today both the objects and the popular traditions, that is including both the material and immaterial values. Territory, local architecture, daily life uses and customs have been placed side by side to “dignified” finds – in the role of testimony of the past – with equal dignity. Such testimony is firmly connected to the territory and its landscape. Actually, sites of archaeological interest are recognized not only for their intrinsic value, but also for the space that they represent. Today, a greater attention is paid to natural environment and there is a greater awareness that the “archaeological heritage” assumes a connotation more and more ti…
