Christianity and digital culture : analysis of users' experiences of the christian social networking site in Taiwan - Walei

2011

Social Networking Sites (SNSs) have been a popular phenomenon worldwide, while religion in Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) studies has gained more academic attention. Walei as a pioneering social networking site is founded by a group of Protestant Christians targeting at the youth in Taiwan, and it exemplifies religious application on the Internet. This thesis investigates what role such a website plays both for its users and against its competition, particularly in the non-Christian cultural context. Using online interviews with nine users of Walei, how the interactivity affects Christian users‟ religious identity and the impression of non-Christian users toward Christianity is explo…

Mixed Messages and Conflicting Loyalties: Reevaluating the Californio Community of San Diego during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848)

2014

An important element in the identity constructs of both sides of the border, the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848 is often depicted exclusively through a nationalist perspective, with strong associations of victor and vanquished. This article explores how the Californio community in San Diego was divided during this conflict with active support given to both nations involved. While such a division can be examined and understood in a local context, it poses problems for the national discourses surrounding the acquisition of California by the United States. We wish then to focus on this fratricidal rift that has largely disappeared from the public remembrance of this period, including its ef…

Composition as identity and plural Cantor's theorem

2016

In this paper, I argue that the thesis of Composition as Identity blocks the plural version of Cantor’s Theorem, and that this in turn has implications for our use of Cantor’s theorem in metaphysics. As an example, I show how this result blocks a recent argument by Hawthorne and Uzquiano, and might be turned around to become an abductive argument for Composition as Identity

Carré Plantagenêt, Musée d'Archéologie du Mans

2010

There are two main ways to…

Explicit solutions for a system of coupled Lyapunov differential matrix equations

1987

This paper is concerned with the problem of obtaining explicit expressions of solutions of a system of coupled Lyapunov matrix differential equations of the typewhere Fi, Ai(t), Bi(t), Ci(t) and Dij(t) are m×m complex matrices (members of ℂm×m), for 1≦i, j≦N, and t in the interval [a,b]. When the coefficient matrices of (1.1) are timeinvariant, Dij are scalar multiples of the identity matrix of the type Dij=dijI, where dij are real positive numbers, for 1≦i, j≦N Ci, is the transposed matrix of Bi and Fi = 0, for 1≦i≦N, the Cauchy problem (1.1) arises in control theory of continuous-time jump linear quadratic systems [9–11]. Algorithms for solving the above particular case can be found in [1…

The ladybird homeobox genes are essential for the specification of a subpopulation of neural cells

2004

AbstractIn Drosophila, neurons and glial cells are produced by neural precursor cells called neuroblasts (NBs), which can be individually identified. Each NB generates a characteristic cell lineage specified by a precise spatiotemporal control of gene expression within the NB and its progeny. Here we show that the homeobox genes ladybird early and ladybird late are expressed in subsets of cells deriving from neuroblasts NB 5-3 and NB 5-6 and are essential for their correct development. Our analysis revealed that ladybird in Drosophila, like their vertebrate orthologous Lbx1 genes, play an important role in cell fate specification processes. Among those cells that express ladybird are NB 5-6…

Reviewing the identity of the Maltese Polypodium (Polypodiaceae) – new evidence from morphology and flow cytometry

2020

The first record of Polypodium from Gozo (Maltese Islands) was described as a new endemic taxon, Polypodium vulgare subsp. melitense, based on its unique set of morphological characters. It was treated as a novelty and designated as a subspecies of P. vulgare mainly due to the lack of paraphyses, the presence of 10–16 annular cells, and a mean spore length of 64 μm. The fern was reassessed by us employing a more rigid morphological analysis and the application of flow cytometry. The absence of paraphyses was confirmed, but the number of annular cells (5–11) and the spore length (70–79 μm) differed from the previous study. These and other morphological traits, the phenology (leaf-shedding in…

Professional agency in the stream of change: Understanding educational change and teachers' professional identities

2015

The qualitative meta-study reported here investigated Finnish vocational teachers' professional agency amid an educational reform. Differences were found in teachers' agency regarding their work, their involvement with the reform, and their professional identity. The manifestations of agency could remain stable or could change over time, and agency drew on various resources (e.g. teacher identity and the organizational management culture). The theoretical conclusions encompass professional agency as multidimensional, largely individually varied, temporally imbued, and both socially and individually resourced. Based on the findings, an agency-centered approach is proposed as a means of under…

A Metaphor for Identities in Transition through Urbanization and Globalization: Tofu and One Hundred Surnames

2019

The Chinese artist Chen Qiulin has been taking displacement and the resulting unrest in people’s identity as her persistent theme since the early 1990s. Focusing on a series of her works made since 2004 dealing explicitly with tofu and Chinese surnames, this paper examines her exploration of identities in transition in the context of China’s mass urbanization and globalization. By showing the artist’s conceptual evolution, her preference for materials and mediums, and her exhibition strategy, this paper explores two issues. First, it illuminates how the artist has transformed “tofu” and “surname” into a metaphor for the dilemma of identity under the urbanization in China. Second, it discuss…

Taxonomic Identity, Geographic Distribution, and Commercial Exploitation of the Culinary-Medicinal Mushroom Pleurotus nebrodensis (Basidiomycetes)

2016

An updated overview of the outcome of studies conducted on the culinary-medicinal mushroom Pleurotus nebrodensis is presented by placing emphasis on the clarification of the taxonomic identity of P. nebrodensis and other related taxa possessing entirely white to cream basidiomes, which grow in association with different plants of the family Apiaceae. Cultivation techniques, quality of the product sold and sales price, as well as nutritional and medicinal aspects are discussed. Taking also into consideration the high economic importance of P. nebrodensis, it is essential to proceed with the verification of the commercial strains currently available in the international market under the name …
