How Does the Type of Migration Influence the Social Functioning of Polish Migrants in the Culture of the Host Country?

The aim of the project was to research the social functioning of labour migrants in the culture of the host country. We were interested in showing the relationship between the time-frame of migration and the dimensions of socio-cultural adaptation. The study was conducted on a N=105 sample of Poles working abroad. A link to an online questionnaire was sent to those who had worked abroad during the study. The subjects were Poles who migrated to various countries in Western Europe. [EN] This article re-visits three studies that originally focused on beliefs about second language (L2) learning and teaching held by student teachers. The studies have been conducted in the same educational context (that is, at a Finnish university). The participants in the studies are majors or minors in English, Swedish, German, etc., and they range from first-year students to fifth-year students about to graduate as qualified L2 teachers. The material being presented in this paper is a study case – the analysis of an interview which the author conducted with a granddaughter of the Lemkos dis-placed to Lower Silesia in 1947 as part of Operation Vistula. The narration of the interlocutor overfilled with emotions reveals the traumatic context of her in-cessant search for an answer to the question: Who am I? Since she did not agree to make the entirety of her talk public, transferring in this way the obligation to protect her name onto the author, the interview became a unique personal ex-perience for the latter at the same time.
