On the Convergence of Tsetlin Machines for the IDENTITY- and NOT Operators

2020

The Tsetlin Machine (TM) is a recent machine learning algorithm with several distinct properties, such as interpretability, simplicity, and hardware-friendliness. Although numerous empirical evaluations report on its performance, the mathematical analysis of its convergence is still open. In this article, we analyze the convergence of the TM with only one clause involved for classification. More specifically, we examine two basic logical operators, namely, the "IDENTITY"- and "NOT" operators. Our analysis reveals that the TM, with just one clause, can converge correctly to the intended logical operator, learning from training data over an infinite time horizon. Besides, it can capture arbit…

Towards a Trustful Digital World : Exploring Self-Sovereign Identity Ecosystems

2021

In the current global situation-burdened by, among others, a vast number of people without formal identification, digital leap, the need for health passports and contact tracking applications-providing private and secure digital identity for individuals, organizations and other entities is crucial. The emerging self-sovereign identity (SSI) solutions rely on distributed ledger technologies and verifiable credentials and have the potential to enable trustful digital interactions. In this human-centric paradigm, trust among actors can be established in a decentralized manner while the identity holders are able to own and control their confidential data. In this paper, we build on observations…

A study on the degree of relationship between two individuals.

2000

The paper studies the likely degree of relationship between two individuals who could possibly be half sibs. The possible common ancestor was dead, which further complicated the problem. The model used was devised by Thompson [in Rao and Chakraborty (eds): Handbook of Statistics, North-Holland, Amsterdam, 1991] and establishes a correspondence between the possible degree of relationship and certain feasible probability distributions on the number of identical by descent genes. Two statistical approaches are considered: the classical one, in which the maximum likelihood estimation for the parameters of Thompson’s model are obtained, and the Bayesian one, in which the test of the hypothesis o…

Family business branding : communicating a family-based brand identity

2017

Scholars suggest that family-owned businesses can capitalize on their family ties by promoting the fact that they are family-owned in their marketing communications. Existing research suggests that promoting the familial component of a family-owned business can evoke positive associations with the business' stakeholders, increase employee loyalty and motivation, and be a source of competitive advantage against non-family businesses. Although there is an increasing awareness that family-owned businesses can benefit from promoting the fact that they are family-owned in their marketing and branding efforts, very little literature exists on how such a strategy is effectively implemented. By app…

Misconceptions and Ambiguities in VET: Do We Speak the Same Language?

2021

This chapter reviews some of the most extended notions used in the field of VET. Historical and comparative analysis of education run the risk to use commonplaces without proper understanding of the nuances, difficult to translate but which give different meaning to the same words. In particular, I explain these notions and their meaning and context to show the contrast among countries with different VET traditions. The main challenge is probably to consider current and historical differences between a school-based vocational education system and those where apprenticeships have been the mainstream. Academic work needs to be accurate and avoid quick and careless translation, and even manipu…

The Effect of Incongruence Between CEO and Corporate Brand Personality on Financial Analysts’ Attitudes and Assessment of a Company’s Performance

2014

This research assesses the role of two types of nonfinancial information in investor relations: The personality of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the personality of the corporate brand. As both personalities determine the identity of a company and the relationship with its stakeholders, we investigate their relevance and the effect of incongruence between these two personalities on financial analysts. Eleven semistructured interviews were conducted to answer the theoretically derived research questions. Empirical findings show that both personalities are relevant to analysts and that perceived incongruence between these personalities can cause adverse effects. Company size, stage of …

Almost polynomial growth: Classifying varieties of graded algebras

2015

Let G be a finite group, V a variety of associative G-graded algebras and c (V), n = 1, 2, …, its sequence of graded codimensions. It was recently shown by Valenti that such a sequence is polynomially bounded if and only if V does not contain a finite list of G-graded algebras. The list consists of group algebras of groups of order a prime number, the infinite-dimensional Grassmann algebra and the algebra of 2 × 2 upper triangular matrices with suitable gradings. Such algebras generate the only varieties of G-graded algebras of almost polynomial growth, i.e., varieties of exponential growth such that any proper subvariety is polynomially bounded. In this paper we completely classify all sub…
