Young Adults’ Conceptions of the Sacred in Finland Today

2016

This study examined young adults’ perspectives on the concept of the sacred. Altogether, 334 young Finnish adults aged 19–35 were studied through a self-report questionnaire. The participants’ personal conceptions, reflections and experiences of the sacred were assessed with open-ended questions. Answers were classified in a data-determined content analysis using a thematic analytical approach. In addition, the study examined how these understandings of the sacred were related to subjective religiosity and how the definitions vary across gender. The findings suggest that the conceptions of the sacred mainly concentrate on individuality and personal issues, including personal opinion, rest a…

Social movements and the contested institutional identity of the hospital

2020

Taking popular protest as a common reaction to changes in hospital services as its point of departure, this paper explores how a social movement has taken on the issue of the hospital as an institution. In the wake of the transformation of Norwegian public hospitals into health enterprises (trusts), this paper explores community resistance to the proposals and plans of decision-makers to restructure hospitals. The study is based on a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the website/blog for the local hospital movement's activities from 2007 until 2017 and of its involvement and resistance in respect of three instances of proposed change to the hospital structure during this period. The …

The relevance of biographic narratives for social workers’ professional memory, reflexivity and identity

2020

The present article is about the use of biographic methods and oral history, and its contribution to developing processes of critical reflection and reflexivity. It is based on a set of oral data collected from Portuguese social workers who played an active role in the revolutionary phase during the transition from dictatorship to democracy in Portugal (following the 25th April 1974 military coup). The article explores how the use of biographic methods (integrated within a historical methodological framework), other than simply producing accounts of past experiences, allowed interviewees to re-capture, re-interpret and re-signify their own experiences in the light of changing professional …

La "Hermenéutica del sí" de Paul Ricoeur. Entre Descartes y Nietzsche

2006

This paper analyses P. Ricoeur's proposal about personal identity, entitled hermeneutics of the self, which aims to fill a halfway philosophical place between Descartes and Nietzsche. The author of Soimême comme un autre offers a narrative solution that will be critically considered according to the relation that the hermeneutics of the self establishes between philosophy and literature.

dentity Narrative in informal family and non-family caregivers of people on dialysis

2019

Temporal fix, hierarchies of work and post-socialist hopes for a better way of life

2021

ABSTRACT This paper proposes to rethink the agriculture–migration nexus through the notions of temporal fix and migrant hierarchies. Its empirical setting is the post-socialist migration of Latvians who move to the Channel Island of Guernsey and to Norway, where they take temporary jobs picking crops such as tomatoes and strawberries. I analyse both how agricultural migrants are viewed by others and how they evaluate themselves. The research material comes from long-term ethnographic engagement with Latvian migrants in these two destinations. In both geographical contexts, temporary agricultural work positions migrants at the bottom of the labour hierarchy. Yet, because of their experience …

The texture of tongues: Languages and power in China

1998

Mandarin stands at the pinnacle of a metalinguistic hierarchy which mirrors the vertical basis of power in China today. State language policies have established official minority languages and Chinese ‘dialects’ under the arching umbrella of the Chinese state; yet their domain is strictly constrained through prescriptive standardization. The tension between this codifying imperative and the dynamic force of speaker identity is examined through the expressions of power through language use, inviting a re‐examination of assumptions about the static texture of language in a multilingual society.

Amplitudes from superconformal Ward identities

2018

We consider finite superamplitudes of N=1 matter, and use superconformal symmetry to derive powerful first-order differential equations for them. Due to on-shell collinear singularities, the Ward identities have an anomaly, which is obtained from lower-loop information. We show that in the five-particle case, the solution to the equations is uniquely fixed by the expected analytic behavior. We apply the method to a non-planar two-loop five-particle integral.

Implications of nonplanar dual conformal symmetry

2018

Recently, Bern et al observed that a certain class of next-to-planar Feynman integrals possess a bonus symmetry that is closely related to dual conformal symmetry. It corresponds to a projection of the latter along a certain lightlike direction. Previous studies were performed at the level of the loop integrand, and a Ward identity for the integral was formulated. We investigate the implications of the symmetry at the level of the integrated quantities. In particular, we focus on the phenomenologically important case of five-particle scattering. The symmetry simplifies the four-variable problem to a three-variable one. In the context of the recently proposed space of pentagon functions, the…

Coordinate space calculation of two- and three-loop sunrise-type diagrams, elliptic functions and truncated Bessel integral identities

2019

We integrate three-loop sunrise-type vacuum diagrams in $D_0=4$ dimensions with four different masses using configuration space techniques. The finite parts of our results are in numerical agreement with corresponding three-loop calculations in momentum space. Using some of the closed form results of the momentum space calculation we arrive at new integral identities involving truncated integrals of products of Bessel functions. For the non-degenerate finite two-loop sunrise-type vacuum diagram in $D_0=2$ dimensions we make use of the known closed form $p$-space result to express the moment of a product of three Bessel functions in terms of a sum of Claussen polylogarithms. Using results fo…
