Astrobiology is one of the new multidisciplinary research fields of the 21st Century requiring collaborations across the physical sciences—astronomers, chemists, geologists, physicists—as well as people from the biosciences and, as discussed in this chapter, the humanities and social sciences. Astrobiology has a along and distinguished history in Europe though only in last decade has it develop its identity as a robust and independent field, one that will be further developed by new structures, such as the European Astrobiology Institute. This chapter looks at how astrobiology will develop in Europe and provide new career paths for next generation of researchers.

Cocharacters of Bilinear Mappings and Graded Matrices

2012

Let Mk(F) be the algebra of k ×k matrices over a field F of characteristic 0. If G is any group, we endow Mk(F) with the elementary grading induced by the k-tuple (1,...,1,g) where g ∈ G, g2 ≠ 1. Then the graded identities of Mk(F) depending only on variables of homogeneous degree g and g − 1 are obtained by a natural translation of the identities of bilinear mappings (see Bahturin and Drensky, Linear Algebra Appl 369:95–112, 2003). Here we study such identities by means of the representation theory of the symmetric group. We act with two copies of the symmetric group on a space of multilinear graded polynomials of homogeneous degree g and g − 1 and we find an explicit decomposition of the …

Emerging identity of Finnish nurse teachers: student teachers' narratives in a group exam.

2005

Summary In Finland students pursuing in Master's Degree Programme have a previous degree in nursing from polytechnics. Nurse teacher qualification also includes at least five year's experience of working in practice. This article concentrates on the conflicts student teachers brought up in a group exam as regards changing a nurse's identity into a teacher's identity in teacher training. The approach of the study on this group was narrative. The data were collected by videotaping two group exam situations (five hours in all) of volunteer student teachers ( N =5) during the last course (Nurse teacher's inquiring mind) of their nurse teacher studies in 2002. The material was transcribed and an…

The development of children’s identification: A cross-cultural comparison between Bulgaria, Italy and Ukraine

2009

The study presented here analyses the development of self-categorisation, national, supranational, local and regional identification of Bulgarian, Ukrainian and Italian children and adolescents growing up in Bulgaria, Ukraine and Italy. The sample consisted of 541 children aged 6, 9, 12 and 15 years. It was found that national, supranational, local and regional identifications differ in the three national groups. It is argued that the cognitive-developmental account of the development of national identification is unable to explain the patterns of findings which were obtained. Social representations theory and Social identity theory, however, are able to explain the different patterns of im…

The 2010 independence jubilees: the politics and aesthetics of national commemoration in Africa

2013

In 2010, as many as seventeen African states celebrated their independence jubilees. The debates surrounding the organisation of these celebrations, and the imagery and performances they employed, reflect the fault lines with which African nation-building has to contend, such as competing political orientations as well as religious, regional and ethnic diversity. The celebrations represented constitutive and cathartic moments of nation-building, aiming to enhance citizens' emotional attachments to the country and inviting to remember, re-enact and re-redefine national history. They became a forum of debate about what should constitute the norms and values that make-up national identity and,…
