Did We Miss the Social Commentary? Responding to Borat on Youtube
2011
Ever since the fictitious Kazakh journalist Borat Sagdiyev became an icon of contemporary popular culture, many questions have arisen about the reception of Borat by the general public. Namely, how common people have created a shared representation of Borat and how the complicated character and comedic manner undertaken by Sacha Baron Cohen is being deciphered. To address these questions that, surely, also could be asked concerning other international media products, this article deals with the reception of Borat the character on YouTube. In particular, the viewers’ reaction to the YouTube video titled “The Best of Borat” is analysed. This video has been viewed more than seven million times…
Clubes y selecciones nacionales de fútbol. La dimensión etnoterritorial del fútbol español
2006
The first part of this paper shows, from a general viewpoint, the historical simultaneity in the emergence and development of football and the building of modern Nation-States, as well as their next differentiation in the socio-economical context of globalization. This differentiation or institutional separation implies an alteration and readjustment of the identity dynamic associated to this sport. Above this historical and conceptual background we consider a research on the ethnoterritorial dimension of the Spanish football. After dedicating the second part of the article to study some ethnoterritorial keys of his historic development, in the third part we present the analysis of the Span…
Patriotism and pluralism: identification and compliance in the post-national polity
2009
The paper discusses the identity-building power and motivational force of patriotism. The basic idea underlying the discussion is that far from being a mere irrational and destructive force, patriotism is an expression of ‘existing human social identity.’ Thus, it argues that rather than dismissing patriotism altogether as an undesirable and/or irrational phenomenon, we need to understand how to discriminate between alternative forms of patriotism while investigating what constitutional reforms might be required to support those forms of patriotic identification that are morally desirable. I argue that to flourish, desirable forms of patriotism (what I call Ethical Patriotism) r…

Identidad contra identidades: el destino contra Babelia
1997
Nationalism and environmental global conscience are contradictory ideas. We argue in this paper, using as a source from the sociological point of view the work of Eisenstadt and Gi…
Young Scottish National Party (SNP) Members’ National Identity and Party Membership
2021
Scotland’s future in the United Kingdom seems to be uncertain. Even though a majority of Scottish people voted to remain in the UK in 2014, the EU referendum two years later fuelled the independence movement in Scotland. Scholars show that the Scottish independence referendum encouraged people to join political parties, particularly the Scottish National Party. This work focuses on young people. Party membership scholars agree that they are underrepresented in parties. Given that the SNP seem to be rather successful in appealing to young people, this thesis explores SNP youth membership and the reasons why young Scots make the decision to join the party. It shows that Scottish independence …
