"Translation and Language Contact in Multicultural Settings. The Case of Asian Migrants in Sicily”
2008
This article addresses the role of translation in the construction of cultural identities in multicultural and host settings. Approaching migration as a form of translation in terms of relexification, cannibalism and hybridization, the essay discusses the example of a new English variety which was developed by Asian immigrants who moved to Sicily. It is suggested that this Indian-Anglo-Italian hybrid variety has been built upon a process of relexification during which Asian immigrants translate their local language into English by keeping the syntactic structure of their native language in the English sentence and by adding a mixture of Sicilian-Italian words. In this context, immigrants ar…
Computational Demography of Religion: A Proposal
2021
This paper proposes a new approach to the demography of religion and non-religion that builds on and expands agent-based modeling and social simulation techniques developed in prior work by the research teams led by the authors. Traditional demographic approaches to religion and non-religion understandably focus attention on self-reports of religious identity or affiliation, where longitudinal data is most readily available, and they employ a cohort-component methodology to make projections. We argue that demographic projections of religion and non-religion could be enhanced by using multi-agent artificial intelligence models of societies. After artificial societies with suitably cognitivel…
Studying religious music at the grassroots level: a look into the discourse practices of Christian metal bands online
2013
Religious issues are studied in various ways, most prominently by sociologists of religion. This paper suggests that in today’s world of globally intersecting webs of people, places, ideas and action, scholars and readers interested in religion will find themselves benefiting from cross-disciplinary approaches which help them to conceptualize and describe today’s phenomena at different levels. This paper describes how the emerging discipline of the sociology of language and religion may be applied to studying Christian metal bands’ discourse online. Although previous studies give a good idea of the structures, practices and tendencies in and related to Christian metal, little is reported on…
Civil Religion or Nationalism? The National Day Celebrations in Norway
2021
The Norwegian National Day (17 May, also referred to as Constitution Day) stands out as one of the most popular National Day celebrations in Europe. According to surveys, around seven out of every 10 Norwegians take part in a public celebration during this day. This means that the National Day potentially has an impact on the way people reflect upon national identity and its relationship to the Lutheran heritage. In this paper, I will focus on the role religion plays in the Norwegian National Day rituals. Researchers have described these rituals as both containing a significant religious element and being rather secularized. In this article, I discuss the extent to which the theoretical con…
Sustainability, Territorial Resources and Social Capital
2017
In Italy, in the last two decades, new methods of intervention in planning and land policies have been used, which focused more and more on territorial government, governance, development, cohesion and environmental sustainability. One of the main factors that has contributed to the dissatisfaction of the residents is the lack of quality in the towns, which has been more and more characterized by urban decay and by lack of services and gathering places. Giving back environmental, economic and social quality to degraded areas or recovering abandoned public spaces responds definitely to the concept of sustainable city limiting urban sprawl and reducing environmental impacts inherent in the bu…
A psychosocial reading of sport actors’ antisocial behaviours : the influence of identity processes
2021
This doctoral work is interested in stakeholder’s antisocial behaviors. This phenomenon is approached by means of the theories bound to the social categorization, and more precisely, the social identity approach and the conception of the social partitions. Following this theoretical development, two mainstudies were led, the second one drawing from the first. A third study was led to reinject the acquired knowledge in the field. The first study, articulating around five sub-studies, aimed at determining the content, the perceived causes, as well as the perceived consequences, of sport stakeholders’ antisocial behaviors. Regarding the content of antisocial behaviors, harm and disadvantage asp…
Gender and the gynecological examination: women's identities in doctors' narratives.
2007
The authors explore the constructions of gender in male doctors' narratives of gynecological examinations. Focusing on the ways in which gender identities are constructed in the stories of the medical encounter, they argue, first, that gender is more flexible during the visit with a gynecologist than has been suggested. Gendered identities are assumed and put aside as the interaction progresses, with its final stage—the pelvic examination—being constructed with gender removed. Second, they argue that undressing is invested with a special status during the examination. It is a gendered rite of passage between the two different ungendered subject positions of the doctor and the patient. They …
Femme et dame de courtoisie dans les manuscrits enluminés en France aux XIVe et XVe siècles
2019
With a corpus of one hundred and twenty-seven illuminations, from eighty-one manuscripts painted in France in the 14th and 15th centuries, my thesis examines the construction of the lady’s character, through the texts and the imagery.Between imagination and historical reality, we studying how the representations of this idealized figure, praised by troubadours and authors of the late Middle Ages, influence social relationship about the medieval noble woman. It is necessary to distinguish these feminine entities, one real, the other ideal, both sharing some similarities through the images. Our iconographic study is based on two main axes: social rituals and identity. This work uses the serial…
European identity from the perspective of political integration of the continent
2013
