Chthonic science: Georges Niangoran-Bouah and the anthropology of belonging in Côte d'Ivoire

Georges Niangoran-Bouah worked assiduously toward Africanizing national education, academia, and public culture in Cote d'Ivoire. As part of this venture, his research projects, including his study of "drummology," can be regarded as a quest for "chthonic" science, that is, an anthropology that uncovers and implements the deep tenets of African-Ivorian culture. Properly situated in its academic, ideological, and political umwelt, we demonstrate, Niangoran-Bouah's anthropology of belonging is not merely an instance of "closure" but must be seen as a multiform attempt to recover a "local" position as a way to participate in universal-global science.

PURPOSE The Spanish surgeon Federico Rubio-Gali worked at St. Thomas Hospital in England at the time when Florence Nightingale founded the Nightingale Training School for Nurses (1860). Apparently, he was quite aware of Nightingale's nursing work and expertise and it is known that founded the first Spanish nursing school, in Madrid, in 1896. This led us to wonder if the emergence of his school was purely by chance or was connected to what its founder learned in England. It argues that these ideals and stories create moral boundaries and support an 'esprit de corps' of dedicated public servants. Our study examines vicarious learning–related communication through which individuals share their observations with other organizational members. Most students and members of present-day organizations would expect that this communication is driven by a prodevelopment logic—that communication serves the purpose of organizational improvement and competitiveness. The Polarizing Impact of News Coverage on Populist Attitudes in the Public: Evidence From a Panel Study in Four European Democracies

This study explores how news messages carrying parts of the populist ideology contribute to a polarization of public opinion about populism. It combines a content analysis of news coverage on two policy areas (N = 7,119 stories) with a two-wave panel survey (N = 2,338) in four European metropolitan regions (Berlin, Paris, London, and Zurich). In three regions, unopposed media messages with a populist stance have a conditional effect on populist attitudes that depends on prior convictions. A higher dose of exposure to populist news coverage enhances both prior agreement and disagreement with populism. Foundations of language perceptions and the role of external factors: a Norwegian case

Non-linguists' perceptions of language in use are generally considered to be strongly influenced by evaluative factors: attitudes, values and ideology. Such a perspective represents a somewhat biased approach to ordinary people's knowledge about language, which is characteristic of both sociolinguistics and its sub-branch, perceptual dialectology. This paper presents an alternative approach, which comprised interviewing 44 Norwegian informants about language spoken locally. Franco’s dictatorship was characterized by an official narrative that criminalized the liberal tradition of previous periods. Such a discourse defined an ideologically correct science that censured the subordination of Spanish science to foreign influence and sought to create a new scientific tradition.
