Tracing 2000 Years at the Source of the Douix, Côte-d’Or, France: Water, Offerings, and Recurrence
2019
The Source of the Douix in Châtillon-sur-Seine, France, has been visited by local inhabitants for over 2000 years and served as a watery focal point for the ritual deposition of various types of offerings. While water deposits are by no means uncommon across Europe, the continued use of a single space over multiple millennia is. An examination of the preserved offerings at the Douix indicate there are three phases of depositional activity: late Hallstatt to early La Tène periods, late La Tène to Gallo-Roman periods, and the early modern period. Despite being separated by hundreds of years there are similarities across depositional phases including the importance of modified metallic objects…

Hart’s Blind Spot. Il tassello mancante in Th,e Concept of Law
2012
At the beginning of The Concept of Law Hart suggests a mistaken assimilation between conduct that is ‘non-optional’ and conduct that is ‘obligatory’ (i.e,. conduct that is either coerced or subject to an obligation). This suggested assimilation vitiates the argument of the whole book, leading Hart to neglect the different ways in which the law typically tracks, corroborates or constitutes power relations. It is true that, famously, attention is paid, in The Concept of Law, to normative, legal powers. Brute social power, and law’s relation to it—the role of law as a cog in the workings of social powers—, however, are largely overlooked. This is. in a way, Hart’s blind spot. I list some of th…
Significati vecchi e nuovi di ideologia: una rassegna
2020
Old ideologies, defined as «grand narratives», seem to have faded away, but this is not a conclusive argument to state that ideology has, itself, disappeared. In fact, there are strong reasons to believe that it has not. In the first part, this article offers a synthetic survey of some of the most significant conceptions of ideology in order to avoid the confusion generated by uncritical uses of the term. The vantage point of the analysis is the fundamental conceptual opposition between «ideology» and «praxis» («truth», or «reality»). The second part of the article opens up some questions about how the new forms of ideology may thrive in the new spaces created by the communication technolog…
Hart’s blind spot. The missing piece in The Concept of Law
2014
L’orazione IX
2022
Libanius’ speech IX reveals the persistence in Libanius of the interest in the religious dimension, free from the polemical tones adopted elsewhere. A global cosmic perspective pervades the speech. The Kalendae Ianuarie festival, marking the beginning of the new year, was a parenthesis of joy and carefreeness for all the inhabitants of the empire, regardless of their religious beliefs. The relevance of this anniversary as a vehicle of imperial ideology for the unity of the empire could explain Theodosius’ rescript of 389 to the praefectus Urbis Romae Albinus on the legal calendar of Rome, which, including not only Easter, but also the Kalendae, would have surprised Libanius himself first. T…
Eminentissimae foeminae: la dinastia giulio-claudia vista dalla Sicilia
2019
The paper deals with the portraits of the female members of the Julio-Claudian dynasty that were found in Sicily (Tyndaris, Thermae Himeraeae, Solunto, Centuripe, Syracuse, Catania, ?Lipari) and in the surrounding small islands (Pantelleria/S. Teresa, Malta/Rabat, Gozo/Victoria). In addition to some portrait heads, a series of lesser known pieces, among which several fragments of iconic statues, rather neglected till now, are discussed. Iconography, associations and contexts are considered in order to assess the messages and functions of the statues, and the role these images played in the cultural discourse.
Environmentalism and Political Participation: Toward a New System of Social Beliefs and Values?
1992
This study examines the social beliefs and values of the Spanish population with regard to environmentalism. A questionnaire on environmental beliefs was produced and administered to two sample groups. The first group, to be called “activists” (comprising 86 subjects), is characterized by belonging to one or other environmental organization. The other, termed “nonactivists” (comprising 410 subjects), is composed of people not belonging to any environmentalist organization. We conclude that, as in other Western countries, environmentalism has moved from being a set of beliefs held by a small group of people to becoming a central element in the system of beliefs characterizing our society. In…
