The Voices of the Foreign Ministers: a Corpus-assisted Study of Ideological Positioning in the Language of Diplomacy
2012
“One of the major aims of a politician is to gain the people’s allegiance, to have them believe that the decisions that are being made are the right ones” (Wilson 1990: 76). The basic idea is that the way we see the world, think about it and act on it, is largely determined by how we 'frame' it, and this in turn may be influenced by our choice of rhetorical device. In the context of diplomacy, language choices, which carry significant communicative intent, are regularly made “to galvanize the audience to achieve a commonality of purpose” (Burhanudeen 2005: 37) through the enactment of specific linguistic mechanisms. This work is part of an ongoing research into register-specific features of…
Eccentric Women? Gender and the Notion of Eccentricity
2012
British writers in the eighteenth century spent much time reflecting on the notion of normality, as the rising middle ranks promoted their ideology as a class, while defending the right of the individuals to their own personal choices. The period was also marked by scientific advances, and for this reason, it is not surprising that the term 'eccentric', originally restricted to astronomy, started to be used widely to refer to unconventional human behaviour. At first sight, eccentricity in the eighteenth century seems to be a male preserve, as the term is mostly applied to men famous for their wit and original thinking, such as Samuel Johnson or Lawrence Sterne. From this point of view, wome…
Tensions in the New Millennium : Inclusion Ideology and Education Policy in the Finnish Comprehensive School
2017
This article examines the discrepancy between the ideology of inclusive education and the national education policy in the Finnish comprehensive school education. The study covers twenty years and is based on observations that indicate that the change in comprehensive school education, grounded in inclusive education ideals, has been slow. This has been the case, even though Finnish education policy has, on principle, committed to many international statements that promote inclusion ideology. The data consists primarily of statistics indicating the number of students in special education and national and international research on the subject. It confirms our supposition, but also the fact t…
ENAZIONE, MODELLI MENTALI E POLITICA LINGUISTICA FASCISTA E FRANCHISTA
2021
The main objective of the article is to analyze, thanks to the application of the enactive approach and that of the mental models of van Dijk, the way in which the fascist and franquist linguistic policy was articulated through the analysis of some significant articles present in the bilingual magazine «Legioni e Falan- gi. Rivista d’Italia e di Spagna/Legiones y Falanges. Revista mensual de Italia y de España». In fact, this magazine is one of the many examples of public expression of a regime’s will to control, exercised through the use of a firm and full of ideology language used to establish control in order to influence the reader’s behaviors. The final considerations reached in the ar…
The work of Fr. Giorgio Guzzetta proved to be decisive in understanding the beginnings of the identity construction process among the Arbëreshë. The themes that enriched the cultural perspective of the great apostle of the Albanians of Italy constitute the most evident proofs of the debt that the Italo-Albanian intellectuals incurred with hi…
Coaches’ perceptions of French sports clubs: Health-promotion activities, aims and coach motivation
2014
Background: Given the benefits of participating in sport, sports clubs have been recognised as health-promoting organizations. To examine health-promotion activities in Finnish sports clubs, Kokko et al. developed a set of standards for health-promoting sports clubs (HPSC). Objective: The present study extends this line of research, by (1) measuring coaches’ perceptions of health- promotion activities in French sports clubs and comparing them to earlier Finnish results, (2) measuring coaches’ perceptions of the health-promotion aims of sports clubs and (3) examining the links between HPSC and coaches’ self-determined motivation. Methods: Coaches ( N = 125) completed a modified version of th…
Open-air Conservation of Ruins and the Concept of “Non-Dislocation”
2012
Most of the on-going debate is about “how” to protect archaeological ruins, whilst at the same time allowing the general public to enjoy them. Today it is clear how important it is, from the actual planning stages of excavations, to interact with experts from other disciplines, who are working on their own findings and offering them up for collective enjoyment. Whatever might be feasible for an indoor museum is not always feasible with an architectonic ruin, as regards both presenting objects with explicative apparatus that determines their significance, and exploring them in a new way when interpretations change or new ideologies are introduced. First of all, conserving excavations is the …
El foro.com: encuentros y desencuentros en el "coliseo ideológico"
2014
This paper focuses on the study of the virtual identity of Internet users in discussion forums and, specifically, their discursive identity. After a brief introduction to the concept of virtual identity, I analyze the basic characteristics of such forums, conceived as a place of dialectic, polyphonic and multidiscoursive communication. In the second part, I examine locutors’ discursive behavior in ideological argumentative discourse. First, I look at the image that the Internet user offers through its argumentative posts and how it is perceived by the virtual community. Next I analyze the argumentative strategies employed by locutors in “El foro de religión”, focusing my attention on those …
O cechach życia w nowym kapitalizmie. Richard Sennett i inspiracja dla antropologii neoliberalizmu
2016
Partie polityczne a proces zmian ideologicznych - ujęcie teoretyczne
2018
