Mathematical tools in a digital world

2012

There are many vantage points from which to gain a perspective on digital culture. The intersection of mathematics and mathematical tools with all things digital is one such vantage point. This implies an inspection of mathematical software. The broad lines that can be taken are the practice, education and application of mathematics. This thesis focuses on practice and application, disregarding education. With regards the former it is shown how the practice of mathematics itself has been affected by the increasingly pervasive computational nature of our world. From visualisation to theorem proving no area has been untouched. I programmed a subset of the fractal universe, L-Systems, into the…

Mediating and moderating processes in the relationship between multicultural ideology and attitudes towards immigrants in emerging adults

2016

Few studies examine intercultural relations in emerging adulthood. Framed from the perspective of the Mutual Intercultural Relations in Plural Societies (MIRIPS) project, the current paper examined the mediating role of tolerance and perceived consequences of immigration in the relationship between multicultural ideology and attitudes towards immigrants. Additionally, the moderating role of context was analysed. A two-group structural equation modelling was performed on data collected from 305 Italian emerging adults living both in northern and in southern Italy with different socio-political climates towards immigrants. In both groups, tolerance and perceived consequences of immigration me…

The Management of Diversity in Schoolscapes

2015

The material environment of formal education (i.e., schoolscape) is determined not only by laws and local regulations, but by the visual practices of the given institution as well. Inscriptions and cultural symbols placed on the façade and the walls of the school building are tools for orienting the choice between various cultural and linguistic values and ideologies (Johnson 1980; Brown 2012). Based on photographs and research interviews collected in Budapest, I analyse both the material environments of four schools and the metadiscourses through which such spaces are interpreted and regulated. Investigation took place in both mainstream state schools as well as in private schools with alt…

Happy Birthday, Mr. Ulmanis! Reflections on the Construction of an Authoritarian Regime in Latvia

2014

AbstractThe authors of the article analyse the ideology of the authoritarian regime which lasted in Latvia from the coup d'etat on 15 May 1934 until the beginning of the Soviet occupation on 17 June 1940. A variety of sources (newspapers and books of the analysed period) are used for the article. The birthday celebrations of authoritarian leader Kārlis Ulmanis are used as a case study to show the performative elements of the regime. The authors argue that during the short period of authoritarian rule in Latvia, the new political culture known as authoritarianism was widely supported and popular due to the dominance of the performative and festive practices used by the political elite to est…

Éticas teleológicas y terrorismo islamista

2012

To the teleological ethics of Islamist terrorism (whose main author was the philosopher Sayyid Qutb, who was, in turn, inspired by the ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood and the reflections of Ibn Taymiyya and Abul alla Maududi) the ultimate goal in a person’s life is to please Allah, and the main means to obtaining this goal is the full application of sharia or God’s law.
This full application of sharia, which shapes a true Muslim’s life, supposedly only took place between the years 622 and 660, during the period of the Prophet and the first four caliphs (the so-called «Pious Predecessors» or «Salaf»). Islamist terrorism’s ethics, then, foreshadow a <i>regressive utopia</i&gt…

Political Shakespeare and the Blessing of Art

2018

This text attempts to detail the functions and effects of some of Shakespeare's aesthetic strategies, and to determine their relationship to ideology. While this is critical territory that cultural materialists and new historicists have extensively mapped, the current text avoids the preferred methods of enquiry that these lines take. Rather than giving focus to the containment strategies of a dominant ideology, my investigation proceeds via a close reading of certain elements from Act 5 of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. I attempt to demonstrate that meaning in the play is determined and encompassed within the self-reflective and dissimulating structures of Shakespeare's art. I su…

A comparative analysis of primary teacher professionalism in England and Finland

2004

Policy‐makers' conceptions of teacher professionalism currently differ markedly in England and Finland. In England they are shaped by agendas associated with the drive to raise standards and ‘commercialized professionalism’ whilst in Finland they are influenced by notions of ‘teacher empowerment’. This article analyses findings on the theme of teacher professionalism derived from re‐interviewing a sample of English and Finnish teachers in 2001 as a follow‐up to earlier ethnographic research in six schools in each country during 1994–1996. Issues of professionalism are addressed through three broad themes: the impact of curriculum and pedagogical reforms; working together to implement these …

THE DEVELOPMENT OF ART EDUCATION IN LATVIA FROM 1890 TILL 1990

2012

Art education is a very important field, as it represents the ethical and esthetical needs of the society and reflects the politics and ideology of the age. The urgency of art education and cultural education is affirmed also by the fact that the year 2009 was announced as the year of innovations and creativity in Europe. It is necessary to research the possibilities the art education can offer to promote the creativity of young people and to improve the quality of art education. The overview of the history of art education gives us the possibility to find connections between different conditions as well as examples of the best practice. The development of art education is divided into thre…

Hegel and Hobbes on Institutions and Collective Actions

2004

.  Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel is usually, and rightly, considered the foremost representative of the organistic conception of society. It is only natural to think that his view has nothing in common with the kind of individualistic outlook that dominates our legal and political thinking, and that I myself have tried to defend. I try to show why certain insights of Hegel are potentially important even for individualistic legal and political theories. First, I explicate some of the problems he struggled with, and compare his views with those of Thomas Hobbes. Next, I try to link his views to the modern theories of institutions and of collective action. The antidemocratic ideology expressed…

Trayectoria, obra y cultura pedagógica de Antonio Ballesteros Usano

2021
