Dry chlorination of spent nickel metal hydride battery waste for water leaching of battery metals and rare earth elements
2022
An efficient leaching process was developed for nickel, cobalt, and the rare earth elements (REEs) from spent nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery waste. The process involves dry chlorination with ammonium chloride in low temperature to produce water-soluble chlorinated compounds, followed by simple water leaching. The factors affecting the conversion and solubilization were studied, including the amount of ammonium chloride, residence time and temperature in dry chlorination, and solid to liquid ratio, time and temperature in water leaching. As a result, the dry chlorination process was found to produce ammonium and chloride containing products, depending on the temperature of the process: …

Widespread vertical transmission and associated host sex–ratio distortion within the eukaryotic phylum Microspora
2004
Vertical transmission (VT) and associated manipulation of host reproduction are widely reported among prokaryotic endosymbionts. Here, we present evidence for widespread use of VT and associated sex-ratio distortion in a eukaryotic phylum. The Microspora are an unusual and diverse group of eukaryotic parasites that infect all animal phyla. Following our initial description of a microsporidian that feminizes its crustacean host, we survey the diversity and distribution of VT within the Microspora. We find that vertically transmitted microsporidia are ubiquitous in the amphipod hosts sampled and that they are also diverse, with 11 species of microsporidia detected within 16 host species. We f…
Strongyloidiasis in northern Vietnam: epidemiology, clinical characteristics and molecular diagnosis of the causal agent.
2019
Abstract Background Strongyloidiasis is a health problem in Vietnam, but appropriate information is still limited. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, geographical distribution, epidemiological aspects, symptoms and other health indicators of Strongyloides stercoralis infections in patients from 27 provinces of northern Vietnam attending the Hanoi Medical University Hospital during 2016 and 2017. Methods Blood samples of 2000 patients were analyzed for S. stercoralis infection with an IgG ELISA test. Seroprevalence was analyzed by gender, age group, locality of origin (rural or urban areas) and symptoms. Stools from the seropositive patients were examined for the detectio…
Diagnosis of systemic candidiasis by enzyme immunoassay detection of specific antibodies to mycelial phase cell wall and cytoplasmic candidal antigens
1993
Diagnosis of systemic Candida infections was attempted by the use of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (EIA) to detect IgG antibodies towards cell wall-bound and cytoplasmic candidal antigens. Cell wall antigens were sequentially solubilized by treatment of germinated blastoconidia of Candida albicans (ATCC 26555 strain) with beta-mercaptoethanol (beta ME extract) and digestion with Zymolyase 20T, a beta-glucanase preparation (Zymolyase extract). Protoplasts obtained after treatment with Zymolyase were osmotically lysed (cytoplasmic antigens). Sera were obtained from patients with systemic (n = 28) and superficial (n = 46) candidiasis. Control sera were obtained from normal healthy indiv…
The role of embeddedness and top management teams on subsidiary initiative
2018
The importance of subsidiaries reaches its pick with their entrepreneurial role. Subsidiary initiatives (SI) are seen as “discrete, proactive undertaking that advances a new way for the corporation to use or expand its resources” (Birkinshaw, 2014, p. 203), which starts with the identification of an opportunity and should achieve the commitment of resources. Nonetheless, though initiatives are beneficial for the entire MNC (Bartlett & Ghoshal, 1988; Birkinshaw & Hood, 2000; Birkinshaw et al., 2005), they are not necessarily well receive by HQ but instead the MNC corporate immune system activates and initiative are rejected (Birkinshaw & Ridderstråle, 1999). This happens because initiatives …
Multinationality, foreignness and institutional distance in the relation between R&D and productivity
2012
Abstract This paper empirically examines to what extent being foreign and part of a multinational affects the endogenous relation between R&D and productivity. Our findings indicate that multinationals obtain in general higher R&D returns. Also, there is a negative foreignness effect in that domestic-owned multinationals outperform foreign subsidiaries. However, these effects are somehow moderated by the institutional distance between the home and host countries. These results, obtained for a panel of UK firms, are largely consistent with a set of hypotheses derived from the institutional and international business theories.
