Onset of DNA synthesis in experimentally activated ascidian eggs

1994

DNA synthesis was studied autoradiographically in unfertilized ascidian eggs (Ascidia malaca and Ciona intestinalis) that had been artificially activated by a K+-free external medium or a Ca-ionophore. Naked eggs of A. malaca were incubated in K+-free seawater that contained [3H]-thymidine for 30 min, and naked eggs of C. intestinalis were incubated in seawater supplemented with a Ca-ionophore and [3H]-thymidine for 15 min. The observations revealed limited activation in eggs treated with K+-free seawater. Activation consisted of surface modifications and the onset of DNA synthesis. Incorporation of [3H]-thymidine was detected in female nuclei of treated eggs which had not ejected their pol…

Increased number of Clostridium difficile infections and prevalence of Clostridium difficile PCR ribotype 001 in southern Germany

2008

In recent years, Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) has emerged as an increasing problem, both in in- and outpatients. In a rural region of southern Germany, the annual number of C. difficile toxin (Tcd)-positive patients has increased from 95 to 796 in the period from 2000 to 2007. Simultaneously, the proportion of positive tests among all Tcd examinations has risen from 7.0% to 12.8%, indicating that the higher number of affected patients was not solely due to an increase in the number of assays. Elevated numbers of CDI have recently been associated with outbreaks of the ribotype 027 strain, particularly in North America. This strain has also been isolated in Europe, including in Germa…

The Follicle Cells of Styela Plicata (Ascidiacea, Tunicata): A Sem Study

2000

The morphological aspect of the follicle cells of Styela plicata eggs is described by means of scanning electron microscope investigations. The follicular layer is made of spaced, cylindrical box-like cells which are arranged hexagonally. They adhere to the egg through a complex network of membrane extensions making an overall thin layer on the vitelline coat. The walls of the follicle cells are plentifully provided with microvilli, filopodia and lamellipodia, which allow a connection among the cells. At their apical end lies a large vacuole containing a granule, probably involved in secretion. At insemination the majority of spermatozoa is distributed on the apical membrane of the follicle…

Leptocorticium gloeocystidiatum sp. nov. (Basidiomycota), a new corticioid fungus from Sicily, Italy

2014

A new corticioid species, Leptocorticium gloeocystidiatum is described from Sicily, Italy. It is characterized by a resupinate, buff-coloured basidiome and microscopically by the presence of filiform leptocystidia, gloeocystidia, dendrohyphidia, and small ellipsoid, smooth basidiospores, non-reacting in Melzer's reagent. The species is compared with closest relatives. A key to the accepted species of Leptocorticium is provided.

Thermophilic hydrogen production from cellulose with rumen fluid enrichment cultures: Effects of different heat treatments

2011

Elevated temperatures (52, 60 and 65 °C) were used to enrich hydrogen producers on cellulose from cow rumen fluid. Methanogens were inhibited with two different heat treatments. Hydrogen production was considerable at 60 °C with the highest H2 yield of 0.44 mol-H2 mol-hexose -1 (1.93 mol-H2 mol-hexose-degraded-1) as obtained without heat treatment and with acetate and ethanol as the main fermentation products. H2 production rates and yields were controlled by cellulose degradation that was at the highest 21%. The optimum temperature and pH for H2 production of the rumen fluid enrichment culture were 62 °C and 7.3, respectively. The enrichments at 52 and 60 °C contained mainly bacteria from …

Significance of the dorsal zigzag pattern of Vipera latastei gaditana against avian predators

2005

Summary 1. Aposematism is an antipredatory strategy in which prey animals conspicuously signal their noxiousness to potential predators. This successful strategy is based on avoidance learning of predators. 2. Most species in the viperid genus Vipera have a characteristic dorsal zigzag pattern. It has previously been suggested that the dorsal zigzag pattern of Vipera berus (the adder) has a cryptic function and thus makes the snake less conspicuous to avian predators. However, a recent experiment suggested that the pattern may function as an aposematic signal rather than being cryptic, and therefore induces active avoidance in avian predators. 3. We conducted a field experiment in Donana na…

Candida-associated denture stomatitis

2010

Candida albicans is a dimorphic yeast strongly gram positive able to live as normal commensal organism in the oral cavity of healthy people. It is the yeast more frequently isolated in the oral cavity. Under local and systemic factors related to the host conditions, it becomes virulent and responsible of oral diseases known as oral candidiasis. It has been shown that the presence of denture is a predisposing factor to the onset of pathologies related to C. albicans. Clinical studies have shown that C. albicans is not only able to adhere to the mucous surfaces, but also to stick to the acrylic resins of the dental prostheses. Both the plaque accumulated on the denture and the poor oral hygie…

Czy administracja publiczna musi wykonywać zadania z zakresu pomocy społecznej?

2020

Which innovation strategy do internationalised firms follow?: evidence from Spain

2016

This paper compares the innovation strategy of internationalised firms, foreign-owned subsidiaries and domestic exporters, relative to firms that serve the domestic market only. The analysis is performed on a sample of manufacturing Spanish firms over the period 2006-2011. We not only focus on different forms of innovation, distinguishing between imitation and pioneer innovation, but also on the heterogeneity of exporters and foreign-owned firms. We find that foreign-owned firms and domestic exporters (excluding those serving only the EU market) are more likely to introduce market novelties ahead of competitors in low-tech sectors and, to a lesser extent, imitate more than local firms. Howe…
