Tobacco use prevalence, knowledge and attitudes, and tobacco cessation training among medical students: results of a pilot study of Global Health Pro…
2011
Aim The aims of this study were to examine tobacco use prevalence, knowledge and attitudes, and tobacco cessation training among students attending Italian medical schools using the Global Health Professions Student Survey approach and to identify possible factors associated with smoking status. Subjects and Methods A multicentre cross-sectional pilot study was carried out in five Italian Schools of Medicine from March to April 2009. Questionnaires were administered in anonymous, voluntary and self-administered form to third year students attending medical schools. The outcome measure was “being a current smoker”. A logistic regression was used to evaluate possible factors associated with s…

Molecular study on nosocomial Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains.
1989
Nosocomial Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates were typed by DNA fingerprinting techniques. Chromosomal DNA banding patterns, after endonuclease digestion, of six isolates from a neonatal care unit confirmed the results of O-serotyping and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern analysis. In contrast, the characterization by chromosomal DNA fingerprinting of P. aeruginosa strains isolated from patients treated in a burn unit disagreed with the two classic typing methods: in fact, isolates that varied in serotype and antibiograms showed identical restriction endonuclease profiles, whereas two indistinguishable isolates cultured from individual patients were easily and reproducibly differentiated by…

Modified most-probable-number technique for the specific determination of Escherichia coli from environmental samples using a fluorogenic method
1990
A specific and senstive modification of the most-probable-number (MPN) technique by addition of 4-methylumbelliferyl-β-D-glucuronide (MUG) to both presumptive and confirmatory media was performed. The use of this modification allows the precise determination of Escherichia coli from marine samples (seawater, sediment and shellfish) within 7 days compared to 10–12 days required by using of the standard methodology. No false-positive isolates for fluorescence reaction have been observed, although one E. coli strain fluorescent-positive on agar was isolated from nonfluorescent tubes. Klebsiella pneumoniae was the species most frequently detected from tubes with gas and fluorescence production …
The management of multiple sclerosis by reference centers in Italy: health demands and needs in Campania region.
2015
This cross-sectional study has investigated the diagnostic and therapeutic management of patients suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS) in the Campania Region (Italy). A survey involving all the reference centers for MS in Campania Region was conducted from March to August 2011. Centers responded to a web-administered questionnaire on management and clinical characteristics of MS patients. In the study period, 3263 patients (mean age 37 years, 66 % females) accessed the centers. Patients received a first diagnosis of MS in 161 cases (4.9 %). About 37 % of the subjects without a previous diagnosis came to the centers on their own initiative. All patients underwent a complete neurological ex…
