This article analyses how the role of sportsmen as defenders of the country was seen during the Winter War (1939–1940) and how their performance as soldiers was evaluated by sports experts. The image of the Finnish sportsman (cf. Paavo Nurmi) as physically and mentally particularly fit type of soldier was disseminated by the Finnish sports journal Suomen Urheilulehti and the characteristics of the Finnish sportsmen as soldiers were compared with the ‘average’ soldiers and the attacking Russians, ‘Ruskies’, the Red Army soldiers. ‘Ruskie’, in Finnish ryssä, is a term of abuse to designate Alterity that could never be domesticated, hateful and fearful Otherness beyond history for the Finn. Tässä artikkelissa tarkastelemme, millaisia diskursseja julkisesta ja pitkään jatkuneesta imetyksestä yle.fi ja hs.fi rakentavat ja ylläpitävät aikavälillä 2014-2017. Kriittistä diskurssianalyysiä soveltaen havaitsimme kolme vallitsevaa diskurssia: sopivuus-, oikeus- ja terveysdiskurssit. Sopivuusdiskurssissa keskeistä ovat asiantuntijoiden ohjeet sopivaan imetykseen ja oletus, että äiti ymmärtää toimia kulttuurisesti sopivalla tavalla. Oikeusdiskurssissa korostuu äidin oikeus päättää imetyksen kestosta ja siitä, missä imettää, samalla kun julki-imetykseen liittyvät ongelmat korostuvat. Moral Orders of Mobility: Youth Aspirations and ‘Doing’ Social Position in Finland

By studying the moral orders that young Finnish adults (aged 18–30) attach to geographical mobility, this article reveals previously neglected relationships between aspiration and mobility. The 40 young adult interviewees are living in the midst of Finnish political debates about youth aspiration, which emphasise geographical rather than social mobility as a way to enhance employability and demonstrate aspiration. We argue that young people themselves use the discourse of geographical mobility by leaning on morally ordered social positionings which tend to be classed and gendered. Young women’s contradictory expectations and their perceived capabilities for future work-family reconciliation in Finland

This paper explores young women’s expectations on future work-family reconciliation in Finland, a Nordic country well-known for the promotion of gender equality. Utilising Sen’s capabilities approach, we content-analysed thirty individual interviews to identify differences in women’s expectations and their perceived capabilities in future work and care. The results showed that irrespective of their labour market status and educational attainment, the women’s expectations were contradictory, reflecting a current Finnish gender culture that embraces both the ideal of shared parenthood and the primacy of maternal care.
