Socioemotional functioning across the transition to lower secondary school : The role of temperament and relationships with mothers and teachers

This Finnish longitudinal study investigated the role of relationships with mothers (n = 631) and teachers (n = 56), and adolescents' (n = 848; 53.9% girls, 46.1% boys) temperament in the development of the adolescents' socioemotional functioning during the transition to lower secondary school (Grade 6 to Grade 7; age in Grade 6: M = 12.32, SD = 0.36). The results showed that mother–adolescent closeness predicted a higher level and teacher–adolescent closeness predicted a smaller decrease in prosocial behavior. The first purpose of this study was to examine perceived loneliness among elderly persons aged 80 at the baseline and stability and changes in loneliness over a 5-year follow-up. In addition, the extent to which different factors are associated with and predict loneliness was explored. The second purpose was to study the structure and stability and the predictors of perceived togetherness in men and women over the 5-year period. The overall aim was to identify the determinants of loneliness in old age. The target population of this study comprised all persons born in 1910 and 1914 and living in Jyväskylä. The claw crane—an arcade game that invites its players to remotely grab a prize with a “claw”—has undergone a long process of development from an eye-catching “steam shovel” to a calculated gambling machine across amusement arcades, train stations, and traveling carnivals. Recently, the claw crane has become a common transmedia object in various consumer outlets around the world, serving today’s “kidults” who are willing to play and be playful with toys as grownups. Pohdin tutkimuksessani kirjoittamista rajankäyntinä sosiaalisen ja yksityisen välillä. Tarkastelen erityisesti kirjoittamisen suhdetta omaelämäkerralliseen kerrontaan, queer-identiteetin käsitteeseen sekä metaforisen kaapin epistemologiaan. Tutkielmani on taiteellinen tutkimus, jossa tutkimukselliset jaksot limittyvät taideproosaan ja jossa hajonneet kirjoittajan ääneni käyvät vuoropuhelua tutkimuskirjallisuuden kanssa. Tutkimusaiheeni kontekstina toimii valtio, jossa olen rikollinen homoseksuaalisuuteni vuoksi; olen palannut kirjaimellisesti takaisin kaappiin kirjoittamaan ja tutkimaan tuota omaa kirjoittamistani.
