Maximum Dynamic Lower-Limb Strength Was Maintained During 24-Week Reduced Training Frequency in Previously Sedentary Older Women.

2018

Walker, S, Serrano, J, and Van Roie, E. Maximum dynamic lower-limb strength was maintained during 24-week reduced training frequency in previously sedentary older women. J Strength Cond Res 32(4): 1063-1071, 2018-There is little study into the effects of reducing strength training below the recommended twice weekly frequency, particularly in older women, despite the possibility that individuals will encounter periods of reduced training frequency. The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of a period of reduced training frequency on maximum strength and muscle mass of the lower limbs in comparison with the recommended training frequency of twice per week. After an initia…

Effects of Home-Based Physical Exercise on Days at Home and Cost-Effectiveness in Pre-Frail and Frail Persons: Randomized Controlled Trial.

2021

Objectives: Frailty increases the risks of hospitalization, institutionalization, and death. Our objective was to study the effects of home-based physical exercise on the number of days spent at home among pre frail and frail persons, versus usual care. In addition, utilization and costs of health care and social services, cost-effectiveness, and health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL) were explored. Design: Randomized controlled trial, with year-long supervised exercise for 60 minutes twice a week versus usual care. Follow-up for 24 months after randomization. Setting and Participants: A sample of 299 home-dwelling persons in South Karelia, Finland. Main inclusion criteria: >65 years, meeti…

Piloting a Smart Rollator : User experiences with technology-related motivation and physical activity

2021

Background: Improved life expectancy combined with suboptimal physical activity (PA)represents an increasingly salient public health challenge among the elderly. PA in late life is associated with fewer health problems in old age. Assistive information and communication technology might improve PA and alleviate health problems among the elderly. Objective: This pilot study aimed to quantitatively measure the motivational aspects relatedto rollator use and, by using qualitative interviews, outline how a Smart Rollator solution would motivate older adults to increase their PA in their everyday lives.Method: A total of 19 subjects between the ages of 63 and 91 years participated in the study. H…

Ryhmäinterventioiden yhteys yksinäisyyttä ja alakuloisuutta kokevien 75-79-vuotiaiden henkilöiden asioiden hoitamiskykyyn

2010

Ikääntyvien ihmisten yksinäisyys on yksi gerontologian haasteista. Tämän pro gradu - tutkielman tarkoitus on selvittää, voidaanko ryhmäinterventioiden avulla vaikuttaa yksinäisyyttä ja alakuloisuutta kokevien ikääntyvien asioiden hoitamiskykyyn eli IADL- toimintoihin. IADL - toimintoja ovat mm. kaupassa käynti, taloustöiden tekeminen, julkisilla kulkuneuvoilla liikkumi-nen ja raha-asioiden hoitaminen. Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin…

Subjective memory decline and objectively assessed memory ability among older people : a cross-sectional study

2012

Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore whether the objectively assessed memory is correlated with the self-rated memory, and does the self-rated memory ability differ among ages. Methods: Data was obtained from the Evergreen project. A total of 558 people aged between 72 and 92 years were included in the current study. In order to examine the complexity of the relationships between self-rated memory and objective memory ability of the older people, cognitive functioning was assessed by metacognitive self-evaluations and Mini-D cognitive screening test. Main Results: Mini-D sum score and self-rated memory decline was significantly correlated (p=34). No significant age difference…

Dietary intake and strength training adaptation in 50-70 -year old men and women : with special reference to muscle mass, strength, serum anabolic ho…

2007

Frailty has been defined as an age-related decrease of the physiologic systems that results in weakness, weight loss and decreased functional performance, thus increasing the risk of disability. The physical characteristics of frailty are affected by the amount of muscle mass and strength. Strength training (ST) can alleviate age-related declines in muscle mass, strength and physical function. However, there is controversy regarding whether dietary intake can improve the effects of ST. The present thesis assessed the effects of dietary intake (DI) on muscular, hormonal and metabolic adaptations to ST in healthy 50-70 year old people. In cross-sectional study I, maximal strength of the leg e…

Leisure activities and well-being in midlife and older age with special reference to physical activity and resistance training

2019

Participation in leisure activities is related to better well-being. Participation in leisure time physical activity also has several positive effects on functional capacity and health. Notwithstanding, only a minor proportion of adults, including older adults, participate in physical activity at a sufficient level for maintaining or improving their health. This study investigated both cross- sectional and longitudinal associations between different types of leisure and physical activities and well-being. This dissertation is based on data from three research projects: the Finland 2014 – Consumption and Lifestyle postal survey, conducted with a random sample representative of the Finnish ad…
