Microbial communities and novel taxa in « Continental Smokers » of northern Greece

2017

Analogously to the ocean-bottom black/white smokers, “continental smokers” have recently been defined as sites of mantle degassing through continental crust. The goal of this research, carried out within the Deep Carbon Observatory Community, is to investigate the role of deeplysourced fluids in niche ecosystem differentiation in European continental smokers. A 16S rRNA gene survey of microbial communities was carried out on 11 geothermal manifestations of northern Greece, all showing a distinct contribution of mantle fluids (R/Ra up to 1.2) that allow to classify them as continental smokers. The selected sites cover a wide range of temperatures (15-77 °C), pH (6.11-8.46), Eh (-289 – 40 mV)…

German-Wide Interlaboratory Study Compares Consistency, Accuracy and Reproducibility of Whole-Genome Short Read Sequencing.

2020

We compared the consistency, accuracy and reproducibility of next-generation short read sequencing between ten laboratories involved in food safety (research institutes, state laboratories, universities and companies) from Germany and Austria. Participants were asked to sequence six DNA samples of three bacterial species (Campylobacter jejuni, Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella enterica) in duplicate, according to their routine in-house sequencing protocol. Four different types of Illumina sequencing platforms (MiSeq, NextSeq, iSeq, NovaSeq) and one Ion Torrent sequencing instrument (S5) were involved in the study. Sequence quality parameters were determined for all data sets and central…

Optical transfer function engineering for a tunable 3D structured illumination microscope

2019

Two important features of three-dimensional structured illumination microscopy (3D-SIM) are its optical sectioning (OS) and super-resolution (SR) capabilities. Previous works on 3D-SIM systems show that these features are coupled. We demonstrate that a 3D-SIM system using a Fresnel biprism illuminated by multiple linear incoherent sources provides a structured illumination pattern whose lateral and axial modulation frequencies can be tuned separately. Therefore, the compact support of the synthetic optical transfer function (OTF) can be engineered to achieve the highest OS and SR capabilities for a particular imaging application. Theoretical performance of our engineered system based on the…

A Neural Network-Based Algorithm for 3D Multispectral Scanning Applied to Multimedia

2005

We describe a new stereoscopic system based on a multispectral camera and an LCD-Projector. The novel concept we want to show consists in the use of multispectral information for 3D-scenes reconstruction. Each 3D point is linked to a curve representing the spectral reflectance. This latter is a physical representation of the matter and presents the advantage over color information, which is perceptual, that it is independent from both illuminant and observer. We first present an easy methodology to geometrically and spectrally calibrate such a system. We then describe an algorithm for recovering 3D coordinates based on triangulation and an algorithm for reflectance curves reconstruction bas…

Multispectral constancy for illuminant invariant representation of multispectral images

2018

A conventional color imaging system provides high resolution spatial information and low resolution spectral data. In contrast, a multispectral imaging system is able to provide both the spectral and spatial information of a scene in high resolution. A multispectral imaging system is complex and it is not easy to use it as a hand held device for acquisition of data in uncontrolled conditions. The use of multispectral imaging for computer vision applications has started recently but is not very efficient due to these limitations. Therefore, most of the computer vision systems still rely on traditional color imaging and the potential of multispectral imaging for these applications has yet to …

Evolution of lactic acid bacterial populations during lysine fortification of sourdough breads by addition of pistachio powder

2019

Food fortification is a current practise to increase the bioavailability of certain nutrients. In this study, 5% (w/w) pistachio powder was added to tender wheat flour or durum wheat semolina to evaluate its contribution to augment the amount of lysine in bread. Bread production was carried out by sourdough technology using a selected 3-species lactic acid bacterial (LAB) starter culture (Lactobacillus sanfranciscensis PON100336, Leuconostoc citreum PON10079 and Weissella cibaria PON10030). In order to determine the influence of pistachio powder on the evolution of LAB, sourdough bread productions were compared with control trials obtained from flour or semolina and evaluated for the develo…

NANOTECNICHE PER L'ILLUMINAZIONE

2009

The article underlines how techniques on the nano-metric scale have transformed and improved the scope of lighting products, improving their performance in terms of energy-consumption, luminosity produced, over-heating, longer life, etc. Consequrntly, Led, Oled, and Woled are all mentioned: acronyms that indicate lighting systems of indubitable quality, but still possessing undeniable limitations, especially in terms of cost, due to the high financial outlay demanded by the production process.

Diagnostic Validity of Digital Imaging Fiber-Optic Transillumination (DIFOTI) and Near-Infrared Light Transillumination (NILT) for Caries in Dentine.

2020

The objective of the study is to analyse the available evidence for the validity of the transillumination method in the diagnosis of interproximal caries. Bibliographic searches were carried out in three data bases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus) with the key words “Transillumination AND caries”. A total of 11 studies were selected for the qualitative analysis and meta-analysis. In the qualitative analysis, both in vivo and in vitro studies were included. The gold standards were tomography, digital radiography, and clinical visual diagnosis. The meta-analysis determined the sensitivity, specificity, and area below the ROC curve relative to the transillumination method in the diagnosis …

Supercontinuum optimization for dual-soliton based light sources using genetic algorithms in a grid platform

2014

We present a numerical strategy to design fiber based dual pulse light sources exhibiting two predefined spectral peaks in the anomalous group velocity dispersion regime. The frequency conversion is based on the soliton fission and soliton self-frequency shift occurring during super- continuum generation. The optimization process is carried out by a genetic algorithm that provides the optimum input pulse parameters: wavelength, temporal width and peak power. This algorithm is implemented in a Grid platform in order to take advantage of distributed computing. These results are useful for optical coherence tomography applications where bell-shaped pulses located in the second near-infrared wi…

Electric field manipulation in Al/CdTe/Pt detectors under optical perturbations

2017

Abstract Al/CdTe/Pt detectors are very attractive devices for high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy, even though they suffer from polarization phenomena, which cause a progressive time degradation of the spectroscopic performance. In this work we investigated on the time dependence of the electric field of an Al/CdTe/Pt detector under optical perturbation by means of Pockels effect measurements. A tunable laser with wavelengths ranging within 700−1000 nm and a 940 nm light emitting diode (LED) were used. The measurements of both the electric field profile and the total current were used to better understand the effects of the optical perturbation on polarization phenomena. The results point ou…
