Tunable liquid lens equipped virtual reality adapter for scientific, medical, and therapeutic goals
2018
We adapted virtual reality appliances to use them in scientific medical diagnostics and therapeutic aims by incorporated as part of appliance ocular system two electrically tunable Optotune liquid lenses, controllable by computer USB ports within 20D range. In present time we used the appliance to investigate the mono- and/or binocularly illusory perception dominances (Shapiro and al;2008), nonlinearities caused by controversial Gestalt recognition of motion. Back layer of stimuli elements contained internal motion sources - clockwise spinning disk on neutral background. Disk consisted of centrosymmetric radial rays which luminance was sinus mode modulated along the disc circumference. Spin…
Intergovernmental Fiscal Relations: The Efficiency Effect of Taxes, Transfers, and Fiscal Illusion
2012
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the efficiency cost of transfers. To this end, we develop a model of individual demand decisions about the provision of a regional public good that encompasses a continuum of tax–transfer scenarios to finance regional public expenditure. We assume that individuals have identical quasi-linear preferences defined over private consumption and the regional public good, that endowment income varies between individuals and regions, and that regions have different predetermined sizes. In an economy-wide resource constrained framework we show that, despite its simplicity, this model is capable of discriminating the efficiency properties of the different scen…
The good process or the great illusion? A spatial perspective on public participation in Danish municipal wind turbine planning
2021
This paper explores the nature of public participation in Danish municipal wind power planning. Although the procedure for involving citizens embedded in the environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedure for wind power projects is often praised for its participatory character, the approach is not without problems. In this paper, we identify the limitations and potentials of the public space provided for citizen involvement. By means of Gaventa’s terminology suggesting a continuum of public spaces for participation, the paper shows how the planning process can be approached from different spatial perspectives – each of them illuminating different forms of power, resistance and opportunitie…
The illusion of contact: Insights from Winnicott’s 1952 letter to Klein
2021
Using Winnicott’s theory, this article produces an account of the individual’s relation to a given conceptual framework. Whereas Winnicott’s ideas have been almost exclusively discussed in developmental and psychopathological contexts, the present article extends Winnicott’s theory and applies it to the problem of interpersonal understanding. Taking a lead from one of Winnicott’s letters to Klein, the article investigates the problem of expressing one’s idiosyncratic insights in the confines of a given conceptual framework. The article examines Winnicott’s theory of compliance and creativity, discusses the plea that Winnicott makes to Klein, analyses the encounter with a “dead language”, an…
Introduzione a Vitaliano Brancati, Tutti i racconti, a cura di Domenica Perrone
2018
Uncertain outcome presentations bias decisions: experimental evidence from Finland and Italy
2016
Even in their everyday lives people are expected to make difficult decisions objectively and rationally, no matter how complex or uncertain the situation. In this research, we study how the format of presentation and the amount of presented information concerning risky events influence the decision-making process, and the propensity to take risk in decision makers. The results of an exploratory survey conducted in Finland and in Italy suggest that decision-making behavior changes according to the way the information is presented. We provide experimental evidence that different representations of expected outcomes create distinct cognitive biases and as a result affect the decisions made. Th…

La "normatività" tra etica e metafisica
2017
The Author’s aim is to highlight the limits of monist metaphysics which underpin the paradigm of Secular Humanism. In fact, all forms of monism consider good and evil either as internal momentums to the logic of development of the world, or as mere illusions within the evolutionary process. Can tragedies as the Holocaust be interpreted by such a monistic approach? The distinction between ‘polar opposition’ and ‘logic of contradiction’ is introduced by Romano Guardini. This is based on a creationistic metaphysic and it is useful to show that our practical-moral investigation is legitimated only by a theist approach. By considering good and evil as two aspect with mutual implications, monisti…
Cortical excitability changes in chronic migraine vs episodic migraine: evidence by sound-induced flash illusions
2014
Introduction: Sound-induced flash illusions(SIFI) permit to evaluate crossmodal audio-visual perception. When one flash is accompanied by two beeps, it is perceived as two flashes(’fission’illusion); a ‘fusion’ illusion occurs when a single beep causes the fusion of a double flash stimulus. SIFI strictly depends on cortical excitability: healthy controls perceive less illusions by increasing visual cortex excitability through anodal tDCS [1]. Aim: to evaluate if, due to cortical hyperexcitability, differences in SIFI occur in migraine and further changes can be found across migraine cycle, migraine chronification an drug overuse. Methods: we enrolled 64 patients with episodic migraine, 32 w…
