Privacy preserving mechanisms for enforcing security and privacy requirements in E-health solutions

2016

In the last few decades, there have been significant efforts in integrating information and communication technologies (ICT) into healthcare practices. This new paradigm commonly identified as electronic healthcare (e-health) allows provisioning of healthcare services at an affordable price to its consumers. However, there have been questions raised about the security of the sensitive information such as health records as well as the privacy of involving parties raising doubts on the minds of the general public. Thus, it is important to understand the potential security challenges in e-health systems and successfully resolve them by taking adequate measures to ensure fair utilization of suc…

The Evolution of Blockchain Virtual Machine Architecture Towards an Enterprise Usage Perspective

2019

Virtualization in the context of blockchain systems represents an essential phase in the development and migration of services from public chains to enterprise logic. Most of the ongoing blockchain uses-cases are using the existing public ledgers, but for business products and services, there is a need for custom tailored solutions to ensure flexibility and security. The Ethereum Virtual Machine has opened new ways to solve problems that require a public proof by executing logic on a decentralized ecosystem. In a natural evolutive process, virtualization logic was shaped by numerous architectures and business requirements. Beside performance and scalability, enterprise virtual machines are …

Distributed Coverage of Ego Networks in F2F Online Social Networks

2016

Although most online social networks rely on a centralized infrastructure, several proposals of Distributed Online Social Networks (DOSNs) have been recently presented. Since in DOSNs user profiles are stored on the peers of the users belonging to the network, one of the main challenges comes from guaranteeing the profile availability when the owner of the data is not online. In this paper, we propose a DOSN based on a friend-to-friend P2P overlay where the user's data is stored only on friend peers. Our approach is based on the ego-network concept, which models the social network from the local point of view of a single user. We propose a distributed algorithm which is based on the notion …

Privacy and temporal aware allocation of data in decentralized online social networks

2017

Distributed Online Social Networks (DOSNs) have recently been proposed to grant users more control over the data they share with the other users. Indeed, in contrast to centralized Online Social Networks (such as Facebook), DOSNs are not based on centralized storage services, because the contents shared by the users are stored on the devices of the users themselves. One of the main challenges in a DOSN comes from guaranteeing availability of the users' contents when the data owner disconnects from the network. In this paper, we focus our attention on data availability by proposing a distributed allocation strategy which takes into account both the privacy policies defined on the contents an…

A Survey on Privacy in Decentralized Online Social Networks

2018

Decentralized Online Social Networks (DOSNs) have recently captured the interest of users because of the more control given to them over their shared contents. Indeed, most of the user privacy issues related to the centralized Online Social Network (OSN) services (such as Facebook or Google+) do not apply in the case of DOSNs because of the absence of the centralized service provider. However, these new architectures have motivated researchers to investigate new privacy solutions that allow DOSN’s users to protect their contents by taking into account the decentralized nature of the DOSNs platform. In this survey, we provide a comprehensive overview of the privacy solutions adopted by…

Separating compound figures in journal articles to allow for subfigure classification

2013

Journal images represent an important part of the knowledge stored in the medical literature. Figure classification has received much attention as the information of the image types can be used in a variety of contexts to focus image search and filter out unwanted information or ”noise”, for example non–clinical images. A major problem in figure classification is the fact that many figures in the biomedical literature are compound figures and do often contain more than a single figure type. Some journals do separate compound figures into several parts but many do not, thus requiring currently manual separation. In this work, a technique of compound figure separation is proposed and implemen…

Aligning Relational Schema and OWL Ontologies with Hidden Markov Model

2016

The problem of bridging the gap between relational schema and ontologies is actively investigated in the Semantic Web and business communities. The main motivations are the OBDA scenario, where a domain ontology allows to hidden the technical details of the db to end-users; and the persistent storage of ontologies in db for facilitating search and retrieval keeping the benefits of DBMSs such as security and integrity. In these cases, the ABox is usually stored into a db, and the TBox is maintained in an ontology; for this reason, schema alignment is a more significant problem than the instance matching one. The use of manual mappings is hard and expensive, especially for large representatio…

On Keyword-Based Ad-Hoc Querying of Hospital Data Stored in Semistar Data Ontologies

2018

Abstract This paper sketches a possible solution to the problem of the currently growing necessity in various domains for domain experts to be able to query the database of the organization in a convenient manner. The paper focuses on the domain of hospital management where the normal practice is to involve a programmer as an intermediary between the managers and the database. This is an error-prone and cumbersome solution. The decision-making process of domain experts would hugely benefit if they could retrieve the information from the database themselves. There have been attempts to develop natural language-based query languages for this exact purpose, but the ultimate goal of the simplic…

Extracting Semantic Knowledge from Unstructured Text Using Embedded Controlled Language

2016

Nowadays, most of the data on the Web is still in the form of unstructured text. Knowledge extraction from unstructured text is highly desirable but extremely challenging due to the inherent ambiguity of natural language. In this article, we present an architecture of an information extraction system based on the concept of Embedded Controlled Language that allows for extracting formal semantic knowledge from an unstructured text corpus. Moreover, the presented approach has a potential to support multilingual input and output.

Automatic building of a visual interface for content-based multiresolution retrieval of paleontology images

2001

In this article we present research work in the field of content-based image retrieval in large databases applied to the paleontology image database of the Universite´ de Bourgogne, Dijon, France, called ‘‘TRANS’TYFIPAL.’’ Our indexing method is based on multiresolution decomposition of database images using wavelets. For each family of paleontology images we try to find a model image that represents it. The K-means automatic classification algorithm divides the space of parameters into several clusters. A model image for each cluster is computed from the wavelet transform of each image of the cluster. Then a search tree is built to offer users a graphic interface for retrieving images. So …
