Selective Change-Driven Image Processing: A Speeding-Up Strategy

2009

Biologically inspired schemes are a source for the improvement of visual systems. Real-time implementation of image processing algorithms is constrained by the large amount of data to be processed. Full image processing is many times unnecessary since there are many pixels that suffer a small change or not suffer any change at all. A strategy based on delivering and processing pixels, instead of processing the complete frame, is presented. The pixels that have suffered higher changes in each frame, ordered by the absolute value of its change, are read-out and processed. Two examples are shown: a morphological motion detection algorithm and the Horn and Schunck optical flow algorithm. Result…

Texture Discrimination Using Hierarchical Complex Networks

2008

Texture analysis represents one of the main areas in image processing and computer vision. The current article describes how complex networks have been used in order to represent and characterized textures. More speci?cally, networks are derived from the texture images by expressing pixels as network nodes and similarities between pixels as network edges. Then, measurements such as the node degree, strengths and clustering coe?cient are used in order to quantify properties of the connectivity and topology of the analyzed networks. Because such properties are directly related to the structure of the respective texture images, they can be used as features for characterizing and classifying te…

Meta-Tracking for Video Scene Understanding

2013

International audience; This paper presents a novel method to extract dominant motion patterns (MPs) and the main entry/exit areas from a surveillance video. The method first computes motion histograms for each pixel and then converts it into orientation distribution functions (ODFs). Given these ODFs, a novel particle meta-tracking procedure is launched which produces meta-tracks, i.e. particle trajectories. As opposed to conventional tracking which focuses on individual moving objects, meta-tracking uses particles to follow the dominant flow of the traffic. In a last step, a novel method is used to simultaneously identify the main entry/exit areas and recover the predominant MPs. The meta…

Smartphone determination of fat in cured meat products

2017

Abstract A method has been developed to determine the fat content in different cold meat products by image processing using the camera of a mobile phone. Salchichon , chorizo , salami and cured ham pictures were taken with a Meizu M2 Mini mobile phone camera under fixed lighting conditions of the light emitting diode flash of the mobile phone. Images were treated with Matlab to obtain the mean pixels of average red, green and blue camera values colours (RGB) of the pixels and different data pretreatments were taken into account to correlate colour parameters with fat content values determined in a series of commercially available samples by the Soxhlet method. RGB values were used as input …

A spectral hazy image database

2020

We introduce a new database to promote visibility enhancement techniques intended for spectral image dehazing. SHIA (Spectral Hazy Image database for Assessment) is composed of two real indoor scenes M1 and M2 of 10 levels of fog each and their corresponding fog-free (ground-truth) images, taken in the visible and the near infrared ranges every 10 nm starting from 450 to 1000 nm. The number of images that form SHIA is 1540 with a size of \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$1312\,\times \,1082$$\end{d…

Maximum likelihood for target location in the presence of substitutive noise .

2001

We consider the optimal likelihood algorithm for the estimation of a target location when the images are corrupted by substitutive noise. We show the relationship between the optimal algorithm and the sliced orthogonal nonlinear generalized (SONG) correlation. The SONG correlation is based on the application of a linear correlation to corresponding binary slices of both the input scene and the reference object with appropriate weight factors. For a particular case, we show that the optimal strategy is a function of only the number of pixels for which the gray values in the noisy image match the ones of the reference image when the substitutive noise is uniformly distributed. This is exactly…

Determination of projection geometry from quantitative assessment of the distortion of spherical references in single-view projection radiography

2004

A method is introduced, inferring the three-dimensional (3-D) location from the 2-D radiographic shadow of an opaque spherical reference body of known radius by considering its elliptical distortion, the 2-D shadow location and a known source-to-receptor distance. Three noncollinear spheres fixed to a rigid object constitute all possible degrees of freedom, i.e., the entire 3-D imaging geometry. The method may be used (a) to determine the 3-D imaging geometry from a single 2-D view and (b) to correct for foreshortening of object distances coplanar with the plane defined by the sphere triplet. Apart from the mathematical background the article describes a small feasibility experiment, perfor…

Systems Thinking Research in the Twenty-First Century

2017

In this opinion article, the author aims to depict the state of systems thinking research through the lens of my own personal experience. His point of view is that of a relatively young scholar who has the privilege to be involved in the international systems thinking community in many ways. Indeed, in 2012 he established, with other colleagues, an academic society named Business Systems Laboratory (BSLab), which has rapidly become an important society for research into the application of systems thinking to society, business and organizations. Through his activity of organization of conferences and his editorial activity at the journals associated with BSLab (and recently as Editor-in-Chie…

Interweaving visual and audio-haptic augmented reality for urban exploration

2018

While ordinary touchscreen-based interfaces on urban explorer applications draw much of a user's attention onto the screen, visual and audio-haptic augmented reality interfaces have emerged as the two main streams for enabling direct focus on the surroundings. However, neither interface alone satisfies users in the highly dynamic urban environment. This research investigates how the two complementary augmentation can coexist on one system and how people adapt to the situation by selecting the more suitable interface. A prototype was deployed in a field experiment in which participants explored points of interest in an urban environment with both interfaces. The engagement with the surroundi…

Autonomous Mooring towards Autonomous Maritime Navigation and Offshore Operations

2020

Bollard is a vital component of mooring system. It is the anchor point for mooring ropes to be fixed in order to secure the vessel or ship. An algorithm that translates the segmented mask of bollard output from masked R-CNN along with bounding box and associated class probability to its corresponding edge coordinate and finally to the single reference point for efficient detection and classification of bollard towards autonomous mooring is presented. At first stage, Mask R-CNN framework is trained with custom built bollard. The model obtained from the training is inferred with real data resulting in instance segment of bollard. The segmented mask obtained contains relatively large amount of…
